On unlikely filtering of news: the largest employer and largest industrial base in the US is on a collision course with economic and political reality.

While it has the cards to set off an energy revolution.

  1. Detroit is in death throws

  2. the Planet needs a technology to clean up its emissions, reduce dependency on fossils, create new green collar jobs, open perspectives to clean energy production

  3. Detroit's Ford has the jump starter for that: going from being a major liability (following British Leyland: tax payer supplied £11bln in the water), to being the, or at least a, leader of the solution

How?  By implementing its in wheel motor technology

This can be applied to any new or used car in the US and globally.

Fast.

For example on the upto recently most popular car in the US, the F150

Or a European favourite, the Mini

And as indicated before; electric cars trigger/enable/sweeten/cocreate in a sense large scale sustainable electricity production.

Imagine, no more coal..

How sweet does creative destruction get?

UPDATE 1-Solarworld says plans to bid for German Opel sites | Industries | Technology, Media & Telecommunications | Reuters

FRANKFURT, Nov 19 (Reuters) - German solar company SolarWorld (SWVG.DE: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) on Wednesday announced a surprise plan to offer to buy General Motors Corp (GM.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz)'s four German Opel plants as well as its research centre in Ruesselsheim, Germany, sending its shares tumbling.

The company, which last year had sales of just under 700 million euros, said that it could offer up 250 million euros ($315.6 million) in cash and another 750 million in credit lines, which were conditional on a German government guarantee.

The move comes days after Germany's state and federal governments said they planned to decide by Christmas whether to extend a guarantee of 1 billion euros to Opel, should its Detroit-based parent General Motors (GM.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

SolarWorld is saying that they would convert Opel into a green car manufacturer (whatever that means), of course they are deriding it...

I have to wonder if the White House and Senate opposition to a bailout for the automakers coupled with the suggestion that, instead, Congress repurpose the $25 billion they earlier appropriated to help Detroit retool for new technology does not reflect the core attitude of these folks and their oil company clients: "If you don't help us sell our product at the best possible price, then to Hell with you!"

Isn't it the oil companies and their political clients? The oil companies, after all, are where the policy creation skillset resides in the relationship.

With Bush at least it is a relationship of mutuality. The same for many senators.

With GM/Ford do far behind Euroasian carmakers in terms of quality/fuel efficiency, diesel, hybrid, fuel cell and electric drive trains etc. one has to wonder whether the best strategic move - at huge short term cost - would not be to let GM/Ford go bust and let Eurasian and start-ups with alternative technologies take over - provided they build more US production plants.  The British Govt. but huge amounts into Brtish Leyland, it continued to produce crap and died anyway.

GM-USA is mostly a truck maker ... GM-Europe is mostly responsible for sedans, GM-Asia for compacts.

One approach, of course, is a tariff with a compensating credit ... if a country imports $50 in cars and components for each $100 they import, they get a 50% credit on tariffs. Phase that in, and give the US carmakers a 5 year deadline ... become viable or die. Within 5 years, European and Asian carmakers will have sorted out which components are the best to source from the US, and the dependency of the US auto industry on the US carmakers would be reduced substantially.

Of course, this is the week in the year when a Buckeye would describe a plan for big chunks of the Ohio car industry to survive while "Detroit" shuts down. Singing, I don't give a damn for the Whole State of Michigan, I'm from Ohio

The argument today seems to be that if GM is allowed to bankrupt under chapter 7 then it will be able to throw out the labor agreements and completely reset its cost structure. Conversely, if the gov't steps in and provides a loan, there will be too many mandated rules about saving such-and-such a factory or such-and-such a labor rule, thus undercutting the required restructuring.

the original posting aims at raising the question as to what the reasons could be for

- solutions laughing us / the US in the face

vis a vis

- media coverage that stays in the realm of doom & gloom for Detroit (= the largest US employer and the largest industrial mass production facility) and thus for an already troubled world / US

This contrasts sharply with the powerful message of hope Obama represents

Could it be that there is noise on the line between the President's elect office and the material world?

In 'The audacity of hope' Obama describes situations like these and how essential touching base is in order to clearly see what moves people, what lives in their heart, what it is to receive a pink slip, not be able to afford health insurance

This coincides with the plea from the Integral community to integrate the experience side of life

Important reasons we're in turmoil now stem from suppressing this side in Western society

An introduction to this perspective can be found here

base load for the EUMENA region looks like this:

base load, combined with local sources, in which cars' batteries play an integral role ('V2G').

this could be used in transition towns
