So, the cocktail weenie circuit, military version, has descended upon Bucharest today. Nato yet again extols the virtues of the outdated alliance, now repositioned to fight wars in "the south" all the while, inexplicably to Russia, expanding eastward.
For the next couple of days, Washington will try to cojole other Nato members to ante up some more troops to die in its forgotten war in Afghanistan. In fact, perhaps some of our atlanticist "contributors" have already made their way to the cheerleading section of the gala? Thankfully, we have Dimitri Rozogin, Russia's ambassador to Nato, to cut through the bullshit.
What does Ambassador Rozogin have to say?
NATO is not an organization of stamp collectors. It is not an economic organization, but a military alliance. A military alliance means tanks, airplanes, nuclear equipment etc. Since our wish is peace and security, of course that we are worried when we see a military vehicle approaching our borders. Nobody would like that. Besides, we were never asked. We were always told that the main security threat comes from the South. But, for some reaseon, NATO is going East, not South, in our direction. This is a mystery we can't explain. Master of understating the obvious...but really, to the atlanticists in the audience, why is Nato thinking of expanding to Georgia, to the Ukraine? But really, the most interesting and to the point quote in Rozogin's interview:
The issue that emerges has to do with a crisis as far as NATO's existence is concerned. What is the reason behind NATO? What are its objectives? First of all there's the issue of providing for the defense and security of the member states. But from whom? From aliens? I don't think so. From the polar bears in the Arctic? This is ridiculous... Thus, the question: against whom is NATO building its military capacities? This lack of argument leads to the need of creating an artificial enemy... Ah, we do not appear to be the only readers of Orwell in Europe. This may still be going quite over the heads of our own very serious people in the press and in power, but it certainly hasn't been lost on our comrades in Moscow.... |
