Oh good, I was beginning to worry.

Lovely day in London today. Was driving about which is slightly worry ing as I've got to fuel up soon. That brings the fuel price rise home when you start worrying about whether you can afford it.

I should have switched the company card from Esso years ago. But now Esso has been getting out of Finland. All the stations were sold to SOK - a big supermarket chain, and SOK sold a few of them off to ST1 - a Finnish independent that specializes in unattended automat pumps. So my new card is ST1.

The prices at ST1 are a bit cheaper, but I can't recall what they are now.

Went to a TV show sponsored proerty show to see what's what and where is looking good.

The first thing to notice is that the hall isn't quite as full as last year. The downturn has had an impact.

Obviously america is being pushed hard cos it's the only place where the Brits have a price advantage. Suddenly Italy makes quite an entrance, it's always been there at the margins, but this was the first time I've really noticed it, particularly Calabria. Spain is slowly ebbing away, nobody is interested anymore. Croatia is still getting interest even though everybody knows there's no profit there.

However I was especially pleased to see how professional the Bulgarian stands are looking these days and flooging more than bloody Bansko and sodding Sunny Beach and Varna. No Sandanski, but I'm secretly pleased by that.

And that's a good thing, too

Croatia is still getting interest even though everybody knows there's no profit there.

Might be because the Dalmatian coast is drop-dead gorgeous? There is more to buying property than the profit motive.

Call to charge Howard with war crimes
From correspondents in London
April 26, 2008 11:10am
Article from: Agence France
FORMER Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad has called for Western leaders, including former prime minister John Howard, to be charged with war crimes over Iraq.

In a speech at Imperial College in London overnight, Mr Mahathir called for an international tribunal to try US President George W. Bush, Mr Howard and former British prime minister Tony Blair for their part in the conflict, said the Ramadhan Foundation, a Muslim group that organised the event.

Spokesman Mohammed Shafiq said Mr Mahathir, who was in office from 1981 to 2003, wanted to see the trio tried "in absence for war crimes committed in Iraq".

deredactie.be - English - First wind turbine base leaves Ostend
Sat 26/04/08 - The first of six wind turbines base towers has left the West Flemish coastal town of Ostend for the Thornton Bank. The wind turbine base will be transported 30km to the North Sea sandbank off the Flemish coast.

Once completed, the wind turbines will tower 184 metres above the North Sea.

The first turbine base should arrive at the Thornton Bank on Sunday morning.

C-Power is the company behind the multi-mullion-euro project to provide enough wind energy to supply 600,000 homes.

A total of 60 wind turbines should be up and running by 2012.

Well, this is over all over the media here and with a big show in Ostend (with participation of our DL).

The same politicians who did nothing but sabotaging and delaying the wind-energy projects are stealing the limelight now.

I was looking for media coverage in English ezarlier today, but could not find any. I was there yesterday for the VIP ceremony (saw Leterme), but could not stay today for the actual putting at sea of the first foundation. I've asked them to put up a youtube of all that's filmed.

btw, for the Belgians, the boss of C-Power had a funny jibe at Leterme during the speeches - he talked about his wonderful BHWs (turbines of great height) - a direct reference to the BHV (Brussels-Halle-Vilvoorde) district which is at the heart of some nast inter-community disputes...

Commission launches consultation to prepare an EU Offshore Wind Energy Action Plan

The European Commission is inviting investors, project developers, wind turbine manufacturers, energy companies, government services, environmental NGOs and all other interested stakeholders, including the general public, to help identify the key barriers for the further development of offshore wind energy in Europe and what might be done to overcome them.

I'll probably need to reply to that both in my professional and my blogging capacities... I'll put up stuff on this later on on ET, as soon as I find time.

Good to see state governments taking swift action on the important issues...

State moves to ban fake testicles on vehicles

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (Reuters) - Senate lawmakers in Florida have voted to ban the fake bull testicles that dangle from the trailer hitches of many trucks and cars throughout the state.

Republican Sen. Cary Baker, a gun shop owner from Eustis, Florida, called the adornments offensive and proposed the ban. Motorists would be fined $60 for displaying the novelty items, which are known by brand names like "Truck Nutz" and resemble the south end of a bull moving north.

The Florida Senate voted last week to add the measure to a broader transportation bill, but it is not included in the House version.

Well, Cleo's home. She has a huge wound from the operation with giant stiches, a huge bald patch on her back where she was shaved and about the same level of power in her back legs. Which is all as you'd expect, I suppose, though the size of the wound surprised me.

It'll take twelve weeks to six months for a full recovery if she's going to make one - they're giving her a 90% change. In the meantime it's physiotherapy multiple times a day - helping   her stand on her back legs and later they recommend swimming, which should be interesting because she hates the water.

On the plus side, she's been wolfing steak, rice and chicken and we were pathetically pleased to hear her annoying whine as she pleaded for food off our plates.

And I discovered that almost any pill will go straight down if you wrap it in steak fat!

That's not all: the burgers will be served with foie gras on top.

P.S. Thanks for this too, LEP/rafifoon. I will look at the ET Friday photoblog and certainly would like to contribute some photos and maybe some other images of mine but I have to find a way to do this.
On my website I put some code on the pages which have many of my graphics, to stop people stealing images by clicking on them. So to unblock them, in order to post some here, I'd have to remove the code and that's a hassle.
The solution would seem to be to upload a selection of images on flickr, or similar site, and then upload them here from there. Any better suggestions?

Assuming you have Picassa loaded and set to pick up images on your desktop you do the following. You go to Picassa back to library and click on the original photo which will open it  and may be 3 megabites.
After you open the original photo you click on export on the bottom right of Picassa set to 600 pixels and either normal or minimum.
It will then open its own folder  with the reduced image. If the image is in another folder click on the folder to release the image. Then drag it to the desktop.
You then reopen Picassa library and miraculously there will be a folder which says desktop which will include the reduced image. You then open it and send it to your web album assuming you have a g mail account. I always send it to a folder that says do not delete since if you do ET will lose the image also.
Et voila. You find the link to this photo set it at 800 or 400 if you want it  smaller and paste the link into ET

The Finnish May 1st is approaching. It is the only time you will see 1000s of Finns on the street in white caps carrying half empty champagne bottles, in sight of the police. The white hat signifies you graduated from Finnish high school. Since I didn't, and my Master's hat was passed to me before I walked across the stage at the Royal College of Art to collect the degree, and retrieved by officials upon exit - I have nothing to show in the way of intellectual headgear. Thus I avoid being seen in public on that day ;-)

The traditional May Day parades with brass bands and poltiical speeches seem to be falling out of favour. Erkki Tuomioja, former Foreign Minister and fairly leftish Social Democrat, recently said that May Day parades should be forgotten.

I did march on May 1st in Prague 1968 though.

Meh, dumb Erkki. I spent many May Days in parades (communist parents) and have a lot of nostalgic feelings for those things. Although he is right that the parade has not been that popular in recent years.

The Queen's Day is also approaching! The Netherlands will turn into a giant flea market / street party. I haven't decided yet whether to stay in our small town or to go to Amsterdam again to spend my evening dodging drunken crowds...
