LQD: World Congress of Agronomists

I have just found out about this upcoming event:
Spain is due to host the 4th World Congress of Agronomists and Agriculture Professionals with the motto "The Agronomist as technical and scientific nexus for conserving the Environment on the basis of rural development and food demand". The Congress, which will be held in Madrid from 28 to 31 October 2008, is organised by the Official Association of Agronomists of Central Spain and the Canary Islands (Colegio Oficial de Ingenieros Agrónomos de Centro y Canarias) and the World Association of Agronomists (Asociación Mundial de Ingenieros Agrónomos -AMIA-) in collaboration with the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, and counts on the support of numerous institutions including schools of agricultural engineers and agronomist, companies and professional associations.

Given the ETers recently decided to start a collaboration on Agriculture to try to come up with a position paper, this congress seems really à propos:
The participants at nextthis year's Congress, the first to be held in Europe, will examine and discuss the latest technologies applied to agricultural disciplines and the evolution of agriculture-based industries. Discussion topics will also include the agricultural production methods, systems and strategies aimed at reducing environmental damage and losses of natural resources, as well as the technology designed to improve irrigation and the use of desalinated or purified water. Given the latest advances in the sector, priority will also be given to energy saving in agricultural processes and energy production based on energy crops, without forgetting the role of trade, transport and distribution of agricultural and food products alike.
The main themes of the congress are topics we have been writing about for at least two years:
The main aim of the congress is to analyse and discuss food safety within a context of environmental sustainability, rural development and water and energy shortage.
Registration before July 1 costs €290, and that is the deadline for abstract submissions.

I believe that participate in this event, somehow, this could be interesting for ET, which would be issued at a relevant circle. Participation would be:

  1. Or submit a paper which, although not treated, this would appear in the Congressional Record.
  2. Or proving the presence of a person representative of ET, which could raise awareness of ET and establish relationships with relevant persons.

This is certainly something to be looked into. The themes are definitely those that interest us (or some of us) here. I'm not sure whether we could produce a paper in the next few weeks (at least, the debate on Agriculture doesn't seem to be the right place to deal with it). The new Wiki would be better suited.

Agronomy is also serious science. My own qualifications (big word!) don't go beyond basic how-to-run-a-farm level. Do we have anyone who has studied agricultural science or agronomy?

The congress is for Agronomists and Agriculture Professionals. Does knowing how-to-run-a-farm qualify you as an Agriculture Professional?

All that needs to be produced by July 1 is an abstract, the full paper can be written between then and the Conference at the end of October.

The topics are

  1.        The Agricultural Engineer and Society
  2.        Nature, Environment and Landscape Gardening
  3.        Agriculture and Market Orientation
  4.        New-generation Agriculture
  5.        Water and Energy
  6.        Territorial Planning Preservation
  7.        Rural Development
  8.        Knowledge Dissemination and Transmission

I have no longer been an agricultural professional for a number of years.

Perhaps the subject that might interest us most would be Agriculture and market orientation, which would seem to concern trade, the Doha Round, etc. We'd need to get an "agriculture" group together, and see how we might qualify for the congress. I feel obliged to add that I have the greatest respect for agronomical engineers, and really do feel that this is a high level. But ET has perhaps, surely even, people who can help put a convincing paper together.

How about "the role of blogging" in "knowledge dissemination and transmission"?
