I have been reading a book about the Falklands conflict when something in my head went Ping !!

Large island, plenty of rain, huge wind resource. What's the best quick growing wind break ? Leylandii ?
Can they grow straw in that wind ? And barley of course :-))
Large number of polytunnels for veggies. Millions and zillions of sheep and goats

Sorted.

So long as they have broadband ?

You know, one of the fine things i find in the netz is that if one asks a question online, there is always the chance that someone will answer it... so make sure you ask what you really want to know!

I, for one, had never researched broadband in the Falklands, thinking that sheep weren't truly internetz savvy.

Well, back in the early seventies I knew a family who was fed up with our society (cold-war, Vietnam....)and decided to emigrate to a place nobody ever heard off and far, far away from all troubles: the Falklands.

A few years later they were in the middle of a full-blown war.
Ever since when I see 'Falklands' their story comes back to my mind. About two months ago I was following a link and found out about broadband overthere.

BTW, today it's exactly 26 years ago (21 may 1982) the Brits landed again to free the sheep.

I didn't know it was the anniversary. It's not been mentioned.

But the Falklands were ours, the people who lived there were British and it was important to stand up for their rights and self-determination.

It's interesting how since then their feudal relationship with Britain has become more mature and they've displayed considerable entrepreneurial ingenuity and are now mostly rather ridiculously wealthy.

It was big-ish last year - plenty of books, probably the occasional TV interview.

Some of the books were good, especially a couple of Harrier jock biogs which didn't pull any punches.

The most popular seller turned out to be the story of the Vulcan run on Stanley from the UK, which all of the other books said had been a high profile but spectacular waste of time.

The one common story was of the after-effects - everyone was trained military, but no one seriously expected to shoot to kill, or to be shot at.

It left its mark. A lot of the Harrier jocks seem to have had mini-breakdowns afterwards.

Man Utd vs Chelski

Any bets ? Thoughts ?

Personally I think MU have been pretty ropey in the last few games so I think Chelski will shade it, but suspect it could be high scoring, 3-2 something like that.

by Helen (lareinagal at yahoo dot co dot uk) on Wed May 21st, 2008 at 12:27:53 PM EST
I think a lot will hinge on whether Ashley Cole is fit. If he is then I'd put Chelsea with the edge because he seems quite good at keeping C. Ronaldo quiet.

If he's not fit, then C. Ronaldo will score and help Utd to the win.

I'd never heard the name Chelski before, so, in the great tradition of the internet, i would like to report that my laughter was perceptible even at a distance.  LOL indeed.

I'd like to believe that M. Ballack has brought his game tonight, a "warmup" for the EM, and that we'll see some great football.  I'de also like to see how the russian mafia will deal with the hordes of Brits there.

1.  I'm rooting for Chelski on the basis of their nickname alone.  And because the idea of Roman's being "the Savoir of the Chukchis" makes me giggle.  Unlike those who hate him for not keeping Russian profits in Russia, I am of the opinion that this is all a nefarious Kremlin plan to take over England buy buying it up!  LOL.

Curiously, I keep hearing Russian Man United fans being interviewed.

2.  Uhm, the Russian police are not the Russian mafiia.  And if things get out of hand, it'll be the OMON - scary straight otta Chechnya paramilitary special ops forces who will whip them into shape.  And ... they are not afraid of using a little violence.  Their motto is "We know no mercy and do not ask for any."  yikes.

My protestations that I just want to see a good game are being treated with suspicion, as if I'm sitting with the red shirt in the corner of the room.  My protestations that the only Premier league club I've ever seen a game at has been Man City is not helping that much.

Oh yes - there are.

You might be interested to know that Chicago has a significant soccer (gulp - sorry, its what we call it) following here.  Those Latino immigrants we accuse of taking our jobs have really made the sport popular.  Actually, it's just a big immigrant town.  Latinos, Irish, Eastern Europeans ...  Lots of soccer fans.  Also, Chicago has a pro team.  I don't really know what it's like in other parts of the country, but the last world cup was wildly popular here - everyone was watching.  I frankly don't remember it very being so mainstream in the past.  Anyway, yes, I see people sporting Man United gear around town.  DoDo, can I call these people Sovoks?  There's something Sovokish about it, no?

SA is waking up to the reality that their country of 45 million has been held hostage by some 100.000 uneducated scum. It's stirring. Today my university, the university of the Witwatersrand, had a protest rally that included everyone: students, staff, complete with vice-chancellor, and even honorary visiting professors. It's a serious message of disapproval to the government - and the Wits is still being taken very seriously in this country, it has reputation.

The vice-chancellor had strategically planned the protest around commuting hours in one of the main streets that runs parallel to the main campus. Banners and signs were included. My ears are still ringing from the hooting we got in support from the passing traffic. Of course there was the occasional dickhead (or edickhead in isiZulu), but what can you say. Finally some uniting spirit. A next, general rally will be held on Sunday. It would not surprise me if turnout will be massive.

Violence wise, it was a quiet day. Charities offering support and food can now operate more easily; donation rallies are getting on steam. I don't know if this will be the end of it - last week also had these lulls - but the important thing is that SA, as a country, is starting to speak up, which is exactly what was missing.

No internet for me for tonight; I'm exhausted. And I really should do some work.

Ok, you can win this game if you want.

But I'm not sure that you can put the English and the Russians in the same class.  I mean, we're talking about a country in which vodka is imbibed for an astronomical number of health reasons.  And and equal number of social reasons.  So having some quota of vodka in your veins at all times is a defacto given.  That's not really "drinking."  That's the control group.  Not for alcoholics, for everyone.  (Things have changed I think.)  It may even be considered dangerous NOT to have vodka in you (what will kill the latent germs in you?!)

I began to panic when after a few months I'd lost the ability to feel drunk or buzzed.  My two states were conscious and not.

I don't know, but the advert campaign describes it as an advantage.  It doesn't say whose milk it's filtered by, and i can only hope it's not babushka milk, though i honor my grandmother.

I can definitively say that the vodka tastes like vanilla vodka, and i'll have to drink a few more before i can say whether that's good or not.

Half time. I thought it interesting that Ashley Cole is on theleft, he's widely regarded as the only defender who has Ronaldo in his pocket, but I suspect his dodgy ankle has slowed him up. He's certainly been ineffective so far. Menawhile Ronaldo has run the show. His cross to Hargreaves would have been sublime if Rooney's crossfield ball beforehand hadn't just about been the greatest pass I've ever seen.

United have had two great chances that they've not taken. But I'm glad cos it's kept the game interesting.

Chelsea were slightly on top before United's goal, then it was all united. Set up for a good second half.

well its gone to extra time, and then penalties, so the metro drivers are probably on overtime.

Yea, In the end I thought chelsea deserved it. Just a shame that it was raining heavily and Terry slipped as he was taking his penalty.

Still, not that it matters that much.

The hearing was ostensibly called to ask the executives why they needed some $18 billion in federal subsidies in light of their record profits.

The listing of 43 items is US-based, it answers some questions and creates even more.  The most contaminated are peaches; the least, onions.

all organic. We had so much late Winter around here, I thought that all of the peach buds would wither, but here they come.

Thanks for the reminder about onions, as I haven't planted any so far.

I buy all organic for my juicer since I'm eating it raw and I don't want to peel everything. I just hope that there is truth in labeling.

The good news in Spain today is the detention of the ETA leaders in France.

The bad note is that predator Buffett is in Madrid, bragging he has $200 billion! to buy companies, although he admitted he ´got here too late´ for the growing stage.

Why here?  Why now?  I´m not getting the whole picture at all.

In home news, our Poz. socialist party has been in a coma until a month ago and suddenly ´insurgents´ are coming out of the woodwork at the weekly meetings.  They are being diplomatic when they use words like ´activate, dynamize´, but the committee is in trouble, (they seem to have already picked their own sacrificial lamb) and the fireworks will be awesome  Sat. morning at the ´extraordinary´ assembly vote.

And I have been just listening quietly so far, but it´s good to see a pulse as high as mine, in the group.

What do you have against Buffet? As successful investors go he seems pretty decent to me. He generally does long term investment rather than leverage and strip. His wealth comes from being the founder of his company thus having tons of stock in it that has grown in value over the decades, rather than obscene bonuses. In terms of public lobbying his main focuses have been on pushing for higher taxes on the wealthy and encouraging the rich to give away their fortunes.

His P.R. consultants keep presenting him as the ethical, sweet grandpa of finance, but his insurance businesses, like AmericanRE (?) and Cayman Islands connections are not clean deals.

I did say 'as successful investors go'...

My basic impression is that he is amoral as far as his business practices go, and that includes his preference for long term investments over short term speculation. But that's still better than many, and add to it his lobbying for higher taxes and I'd say he's definitely better than average.

And I totally don't get advertising.

There was an ad last year which featured a drummer in a gorilla suit. I thought it was moronitude of the first water, but everyone else seemed convinced it was an inspired outpouring of god-like eternal creative awesomeosity.

I had to interview the people who did the sound for the project, and they didn't change my opinion.

But - a hit! So what do I know?

I generally don't get advertising either.  Granted, some of that is because of the fact that I only really pay attention to the ones run during the Super Bowl, which don't really need to make sense (since everybody's just expecting crazy ads).

I think they run similar ads there (not sure if they're as good), but Apple has a really killer advertising team doing the "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" commercials here.  They're brutal.
