August 16 Prague ET meetup - travel arrangements

by Migeru
Sun Jun 22nd, 2008 at 06:07:58 AM EST

[editor's note, by Migeru] Bumped

This diary is to get an idea of how many people will be in Prague on Saturday August 16 and what time (around mid-day) to expect everyone, as well as where people will be arriving at (airport, car, or which rail/bus station) so we can choose a location to get together and a time to meet (most likely 1pm for lunch?).

DoDo has already provided train itineraries from Cardiff to Prague via London and many other places in between including  Brussels, Berling, Cologne, Frankfurt and Dresden. Other resources comtributed in previous threads include Prague public transport connections, Mapy.cz a Czech mapping website, and RailEurope.EU or Seat61 for train reservations.

People who have shown interest include:

  • DoDo - confirmed
  • InWales - confirmed
  • Helen - confirmed
  • Fran
  • nanne
  • Metatone
  • Barbara
  • Migeru
  • Sven Triloqvist
  • Crazy Horse
  • Frank Schnittger
  • Jake S

Jerome said he can't be there on the 16th, unfortunately. Sargon also said he's likely to be away from Prague in August. I'm still hoping jv will show up to provide some a local angle to the meet. And what about the Austrians?

My own travel plans are very much in the air due to uncertainty about work. I fully intend to be there but I don't know yet when or how I'll be coming in.

I am 99% certain to be there, although I cannot absolutely confirm until mid July. I simply can't say how I'm getting there or how long staying but I'm in no rush so will arrive a couple of days before and leave a couple of days after. It's not like you can get bored there inside a week. I'm tempted to drive, then I can fill the car up with booze, but then I'd probably stop at Bamberg and.. and...... {could get messy}

Y'all know my preferences, but if you want to meet at a nice bar then the three that spring to mind are;-

Klasterni. It's a lovely microbrewery up in the castle. Plenty of room, inside or out (slightly tricky to find but I can help there). However it is very expensive compared with the rest of Prague.

U Fleku. A total tourist trap because it's a genuine original 15th century drinking house that's never been anything else. There are 8 separate rooms (some very large) and a massive courtyard. 1000 people could be in and it wouldn't feel full. Even if it's not the meeting point, you'll see me there at some point.

Pivovarsky dum. Reasonably large and perfectly okay for a lunchtime meeting but if it's a sunny day there's nowhere outside to sit which may upset those who'd prefer that.

all three do food of course.

By the way. Who chooses the venue and when?

I don't drink, so choice of pub doesn't matter, except for one thing: it shall have a real non-smoker room.

Barbara is going to Prague on the weekend of July 5th - shall we charge her with that?

On another note: if I took the Prague-Frankfurt night train on Saturday night, what intermediate stops do you recommend along Frankfurt - Cologne - Brussels - London?

Well - just those three you named :-) I may check you possibilities later, but perhaps it would be possible time-wise to take local trains in the Rhine Valley so that you could visit one of the nicer castles.

That would be nice - however, we might just fly back on the Sunday...

There is always Prague - Berlin on Sunday, Berlin - Brussels overnight, and Eurostar Brussels - London arriving at St Pancras at 7:55 am on Monday...

Hmm... I hadn't thought of that.

You go, girl ;-) And you're right.

Perhaps we need an ET carbon exchange. I can sell all my credits.

Actually I am waiting for the rebirth of ship travel. Firstly, with Internet and mobile connection one can remain in business, but secondly, the meditative effects of sea travel, and all those negative ions floating about would do wonders for reflective creativity.

No, that is the nice tan you get from the sun bouncing off the sea. It is similar to the effect from a tinfoil collar.

For the exclusion of nasty thoughts (and microwaves), I prefer a Faraday wig. They are very effective. Sinatra wore one for years.

The airport in Prague is a fair way from town, certainly an expensive taxi ride.

Catch a bus from the depot opposite. they don't go to Prague directly for some reason afaik, but to metro stops, which are just as good.

Bus 100 to Zlicin on the "B" line.
Bus 254 or 119 to Dejvicka on line "A".

It's much cheaper. Barbara might be able to give some adivce on what to ask.

I stayed at the U Suteru last year.

The only thing I would say is that there's no lift and most of the rooms are several floors up. But it's okay for being so central

If you end up delaying this meetup, I'll be in Prague the last weekend in August and could attend.

If not, I'll be looking forward to seeing the highlights posted later.

I am with a question mark again - I wanted to use up my last frequent flyer miles. But there are no seats available anymore - I could risk last minute, but am not sure I want to do that. So next week I will be looking into getting a regular ticket - or maybe even finding a night train that leaves here after around 11:00 pm.
by Fran (fran at eurotrib dot com) on Sun Jun 15th, 2008 at 10:49:06 AM EST
Fortunately, I can find two night-train itineraries for you: Basel - Dresden - Prague, and Basel - Zurich - Prague.

Unfortunately, the night train Basel - Dresden departs at 21:07 and the night train Zurich - Prague departs at 22:40.

Because if NOT, there is also a direct night train: CNL 353, Basel SBB 18:04-08:38 Praha hl.n., with Economy Single sleeper compartment still available for a (not much) reduced price of €199. (There is also a reduced €109 in a six-seat couchette compartment or €89 in a normal seat compartment, but I won't suggest to Fran to spend the night that way:-) )

This sounds perfect, however, I work that Friday until about 21:00, so the earliest I can be at one of the trainstations is 21:30.

I will go to the train station this week and check what they have and also look into a regular flight ticket for Saturday morning. Maybe I can combine them and fly to Prague on Saturday and take the train back on Monday. I am not in a hurry for returning.

Maybe I can travel with In Wales for part of the trip?

If I get myself organized by Friday, would that be early enough for you?

If I take the train I would like to take it in the afternoon - to see some of the country side as I have not been to that area before. Would that agree with you.

I might even be willing to make a two day trip out of it, staying a night in another city.

I would like to come. I'll arrive by rail.

There's a catch, though: My budget for August has not completely solidified yet, so my sign-up is conditioned on my money situation not deteriorating sharply over July.

Fancy driving over, even if it means stopping at Bamberg on the way ?

Just a thought at the moment, but it'd be fun.

Looking for ways to get back to London by Monday Morning (new job!) I found this page: EuRail: Hotel Trains. Apparently there are connections with Prague from Italy via Vienna (Allegro trains).

It appears if I want to take a night train on Saturday I have two choices:
  • CityNightLine EN 378 KOPERNIKUS Leaving at 19:02, and going via Berlin and Cologne to Utracht and Amsterdam
  • CityNightLine EN 352 JOHANNES KEPLER leaving at 20:36, and going via Dresden, Frankfurt and Mannheim to Basel.
