We'll be there: our cunning plan is to spend two weeks or so travelling from Dublin->Istanbul by train and then back via Athens, Rome, Lyon and such parts to be in town for the meet-up.

ha.  Reminds me of someone who attended one of our events recently who was from London and started talking about national projects, much to the confusion of all the delegates.  Somebody had to point out that by national she was referring to the UK.  When we say national in Wales, we mean at Welsh national level. If we mean UK, we say UK.

I am keeping the date in mind, and a vacation would do good. But it could be tight: as things stand in my job, there will be some delayed projects that already look set to eliminate our summer vacations (I can go to Prague over a weekend or even as day trip) and are tabled until September.

End of last week, we got tabled until... December. A load of projects pending approval within my company since January got suddenly approved. So I am afraid it now looks very likely I won't be able to come...

Oh dear - now I have to choose between Prague and Paris. I probably can't do both unless the mythical Lord of Projects suddenly lands a largeish 2009 bonanza in my lap. So I'll stick with Prague for the moment because I won't be embarrassed by my schoolboy French. And I haven't been there since '68 and might even locate some of my old film school friends.

If I'm there I'm sure I can help ceebs find a beer or ten and if anyone else wants to tag along they're welcome. There's a couple of places in the south of the City I'd like to check out so there may be a diversion down there at some point.

This may be tough following HUSUM WIND, the annual Woodstock version of a windpower conference.

OTOH, when the going gets tough, the tough get going.

To explain, Husum Wind is like xmas and birthday for windpower people all rolled into one.  Since it's in a very small city in north Germany, there are virtually no hotel rooms for the 10,000 visitors. Most everyone must stay in vacation homes stretching as far as 60 km away. So the get-togethers focus on the conference itself, and the companies try to outdo each other with parties and music and cocktails.  All set in the pastoral high-wind region of Schleswig-Holstein.

Then on the last Friday evening, the Windwanderers Party takes over the town.  There's live music in about 10 different venues, as the "wind bozos" (as we called the early adapters in the US) stagger into the wee hours.

The week is also highly productive, as not only are all the main players there, but so many of the smallest sub-suppliers as well.  I look forward to it like a kid.

I've shifted my view slightly, in that my eldest Francophile daughter will start studying in Aix-en-Provence in September. I might therefore go to Brentwood to see my sister, rail it Paris for the meet, then rail it down to Provence to see the new student is well-installed.

Still thinking about it. Unfortunately it is also the time when my clients go crazy as they get their heads down after a lazy summer. It may have to be a last minute decision.

That perks me up.

Not the fact that it is boring, of course, but the fact that you feel the obligation to attend. That means you and I share some interests.

Well, I must admit that I will be at IBC with bells on and laughing, marketing my wares and talking up only the best view.

I probably wouldn't have said boring if I hadn't just returned from CineExpo where the technology presentations and talks were just more repeats from a very disheartening ShoWest in Vegas, which were repeats from ShoEast and the IBC and the CineExpo and the NAB before those. Progress on wot will save us; 3D. Progress on wot will save us; Alternative Content - Live Opera and American Wrestling for everyone. And of course, the perennial favorite; Is Europe falling behind in Digital Cinema? [Using - Is Europe Dying Technology.]

The technology groups in the DCinema field are quite a bit frustrated at the snails pace, having been ready since Star Wars II to get digital presentation on the road.

Of course, I'll be giving a new presentation at the Venice Film Festival just before IBC, so it will not be boring.

Never underestimate their intelligence, always underestimate their knowledge.

How timely, since I was wondering about cheap but decent accommodation?  Any tips?

Migeru found some decent hostels when we were looking for very cheap places to stay for the last meet up, but which hotels did we all use before and were they any good, especially price wise?

I just looked up youth hostels, or auberges de jeunesse in the local vernacular.

Given this is shaping up to be virtually the Annual general meeting of ET stakeholders, no doubt there will be lots of formal resolutions to discuss!

I would like to propose that ET (Ireland division) formally registers as a political party in Ireland to oppose any rerun of the Lisbon referendum (on the grounds that Lisbon does not go far enough in democratising/integrating the EU) and claims equal media time with all the other groups opposing it for various reasons.

Then we can really confuse everybody as to what the NO side is all about...
