Sat Jul 19th, 2008 at 09:46:59 AM EST

Greetings and welcome to the ET Photo Blog #44. Today, in addition to our technical section Ask the Experts we'll have just one general section which I like to call Anything Goes. Catch the great photos which accompany this Frank Sinatra rendition of Anything Goes.

                             Happy posting!

That Frank Sinatra could sing! I swear, I was sitting on my terrace last evening with my laptop just before nightfall preparing for the photo blog and playing Sinatra singing Anything Goes and a couple of birds overhead started singing along with Frank. When I stopped the music they stopped singing. Coincidence?

This time it was her bringing the big bag of Nikon toys while I just packed two Bessa film cameras (with a lens each) and my little GR-D II point and shoot digital. Ok, so three cameras, but they were very small.

Liliana just took another trip to Greece, this time to the island of Paros. Here are some photos...the first being the sunset while on the ferry through the Cyclades.

On the south end of Paros is a smaller island names Antiparos (turns out Tom Hanks has a villa there). this first photo is by Liliana - the best of the bunch:

Sometimes Greece really reminds me of California - with lots of old stuff and no people...

We'll see about Raphael. He'll be doing his math and science preparation at a very good Lycee in Paris. Supposedly it's work all the time. Several of the French ET'ers have gone through this two year course on the way to the better science schools in France. (This stuff is all new to me since it's not comparable to anything in the U.S. I'm guessing it's like doing the first two to three years at MIT or Cal Tech.)
He'll be living in Paris so if he has a few hours free I'll bring him along. Cheers :-)

This must be one of the more decent apartment views. I went round on a lazy Friday today to see a dear designer friend in Helsinki - the first Finn I ever met way back in '64. This panorama is from his balcony. It is the bay leading into the south harbour. The red and white ship is the Viking ferry to Stockholm that leaves at 6 pm. The rival Silja ferry is concealed behind the building to the left. In the centre are two islands both with summer restaurants. You get to the restaurant on the right (red spire poking up) in a small launch that goes from the shore directly beneath the balcony. It's a 2 minute trip.

The panorama was auto-stitched together using the PSE panorama tool and covers about 170 degrees and 5 frames. First time I'd used it - but I was amazed how well it worked. The original panorama before resizing for ET was about 50 meg.

The apartments are on a cliff above the shore road that runs round, to the right, to Cafe Ursula and Kaivopuisto, (Well Park) on the most southerly tip of mainland Helsinki. The market square, where you might have had a coffee and a 'lihis' under an orange tent, is obscured to the left behind the neighbouring building. The open market is about 200 metres to the left of the red and white ferry.

The shore road goes towards the Embassy area as well,  if my memory and sense of direction are correct.  I took the tram up there and back twice a day for a month.  Lovely city and very livable.

Yep, the embassy area is right behind the apartments where I took the panorama. If you were at the US embassy (?), I've attended a few parties there - not diplomatic though, but run by the marines! I don't suppose the compound is as easy to get into as it was then in the late Seventies. ;-)

So all of those marines they fired at the end of the Seventies, it wasn't down to drink, drugs and loose women at their embassy parties, it was actually down to them inviting undesirables into the compounds? ;-)

Great picture MM!

I've been under that pier myself, directing a commercial for Finnish xylitol chewing gum. The slogan was 'Pure Jenkki, you'll love it". Pure Jennki can be read as pure American or chew the brand. We shot without a 2000 dollar permit and when confronted by the police I told them them I was a Finnish film professor and the crew were my students. And got away with it.

I have much to atone for...

Well, to start with, it was taken with the horizon askew: easier to do than you'd think with a 15mm lens.

Then I had a few problems loading the film onto the reel, which I think might be damaged, and the film got a bit screwed up with fingerprints and kinks and scratches. That's one of the worst frames of the lot.

The scuffs and stains of our intrinsic mortality beach like flotsam before the uncompromising oblique that slants the way to pebble-dashed darkness. And oh, the poignancy of that round thingie on the right that looks like a doughnut except it's black with a shiny hole!

This looks like the sky has been layered over the lower half of the photo like with a Photoshop layer or where a hard edged ND filter has been used and left the horizon line uneven due to the hills.  It's an interesting effect, even if unintentional. I kind of like it, even the doughnut.

Speaking of the doughnut, I once took a photo at Vic Falls and scanned it.  When viewing the digitalized image I noticed some sort of small aberration in the middle of the falling water.  Upon zooming in further the aberration appeared to be a definite object falling within the cascade. The closer I zoomed the more it appeared to look like some kind of animal skull, maybe a wildebeest, complete with eye sockets.  I began to wonder about the possibility that I had released the shutter and accidentally captured a rare but not impossible event.  Then I had an idea to go back and check the negative.  Sure enough, there was a physical abnormality on the negative itself. So much for fortunate events.

ooh, I actually have a question!

Ok, has anyone here ever found a picture on their camera or role of film that appears to contain some kind of apparition?  Can you photograph ghosts?  Even accidentally?

In the camera that is in my phone, there is a picture.  I don't remember taking it - it doesn't seem to be of anything in particular accept my cat in an uninteresting pose.  I only take her picture when she's doing something interesting.  I suppose it is perfectly possible for the camera function to go off on its own.

But my cat is looking at what appears quite clearly to be a man in ye olden days garb.

Oh, and when I try to send the picture anywhere from my phone, I get an error message.  (For the moment, I'm blaming my network and not the ye olden days fellow in the picture.) Otherwise I'd post it here.

I've reached the point of uploading my photos onto photobucket but....

If I force it to the request of only 600 pixels wide then I have to save at 640 x 480, but that's a lot larger than the 100 Kb bandwidth restriction which requires 320 x 240. Or have I completely confused what's being requested ?

I could save them all one at a time using MSpaint, but that'd be quite laborious, is there a way of doing it more quickly ?
