Photography Blog No. 42 [UPDATED]

by LEP
Sat Jul 5th, 2008 at 04:59:25 AM EST

Greetings and welcome to the ET Photo Blog #42. Todays special subject is Portraits, self and otherwise.

Here's a portrait of my Uncle Sam. It's his birthday today you know.

Lots of inspiration in this week's photoblog! Next week will be still life - In Wales

In this portrait he's lechering after some young girls. He looks quite menacing with his finger stuck out like that but the girls are just giggling. No one's afraid of Uncle Sam anymore. He's gotten quite old and he's very broke after all those years of excess and violence. And drinking all that cheap oil has gotten to his liver. But why don't we humor Uncle Sam and give him a tip of our hats on his birthday. He used to be quite a sport!

So, on to our photos. In addition to portraits, we have our regular subjects photos as usual and ask the experts.

Update [2008-7-4 8:16:1 by LEP]: IN MEMORIAM I have sad news to report. I just went outside to move my car and I found our seven year old mama cat Suliao dead under my car. She had been dead for many hours. This photo was taken in 2003 one year after she had given birth to five kittens. We still have two of the kittens.

In Wales, if the portrait you took of me last year is on the net, and it's not too much work, you could post it, as it's one of the best ever taken of a tough subject who runs from cameras (with good reason).

Did you get anything out of your Yashica yet?
by Colman (colman at eurotrib.com) on Fri Jul 4th, 2008 at 04:26:40 AM EST

I have put one roll through but have not had chance to develop it yet. Hopefully this weekend once I've practised on a wrecked film. I finally got the paterson reel to widen!

Do you have a lab that'll develop 120 anywhere near? I'd run a roll of reala or something through it and get it professionally developed just to make sure the camera works properly so that you're sure that errors in development are actually your fault!
by Colman (colman at eurotrib.com) on Fri Jul 4th, 2008 at 04:41:30 AM EST
[ Parent ]
That's a good idea actually. The reason I was going to attempt it myself is that I am not certain about how well I exposed the film. I used the Nikon in camera light meter and then set the Yashica.  I need to buy a light meter but don't have the spare £200 for it right now.  TBG gave me a light meter in a dream but it doesn't work in real life.

Use the Nikon. It's probably better at it than a light meter anyway.
by Colman (colman at eurotrib.com) on Fri Jul 4th, 2008 at 05:10:35 AM EST
[ Parent ]
Yeah, I do that all the time wih my Chinese TLR (that has no meter).  It works great. You can also hook up a small flash set to auto (or to studio lights) using the PC sync on the camera.

Thanks Sassafras. It's always harder when unexpected. We live in a village south of Paris but our house is on a street with a good amount of traffic. I leave a big 18 year old car parked on the street (I rarely drive it) just to slow down the traffic and protect our animals and children. It didn't work this time.

Thank you.  Well, there seem to be kids everywhere I go, and they make such great subjects for the camera by always changing their appearance/pose, like a good model. My only problems are that they are so mobile while I'm not as quick as I used to be, and they tire me out.

Here are a couple more I set up but forgot to post.

childrens' eyes sometimes have such a wise depth, in small, esprcially new-born babies, it's like gazing through them into infinity.
