We have howling wind and astonishingly heavy rain. Ceebs, you aren't flooded out are you?

Some lightning here too.  All of which doesn't help me to air out the flat - I just finished painting my room.

But now, I am so excited I will scream non stop until Doctor Who starts.

It's been a while I followed the Oscar Awards, so I missed this story - yet that was the story that brought the Irish independent film/musical Once in a cinema near me (well not so near actually).

Very simple, very 'natural' romantic story of the semi-romance of a Dublin street singer and a Czech immigrant who make a CD together (made in reality by the real-life singer amateur actors), with a not-for-Hollywood ending.

And the story I missed: Jon Stewart 'saving' the female lead's thanking speech when they won an Oscar for one song:

I miss living in a city with a grid layout.  Someone decided that it would be awesome to shut down all the exits on Route 50 in Arlington last night, so finding my way to Rosslyn was quite an adventure.

The humidity (I guess) kept the fireworks from showing up well last night.  With twenty minutes, they were half-blocked by the smoke cloud hanging over the Mall.  Grrrrrr....

Oh, well.  A good, albeit wet, time was had by all, and no yellowjackets this year!

Inhabitat » Artificial Energy Islands Could Power The World

Ocean waves are already being used as a source of renewable energy, but could differences in water temperatures in the sea be our next source of green power? A decade old idea to generate renewable electricity for the globe with offshore, floating `Energy Islands' could soon become a reality. The concept - creating artificial islands to collect wind, wave and solar power in the tropics - is based on the work of Jacques-Arsène d'Arsonval, a 19th-century French physicist, who envisioned the idea of using the sea as a giant solar-energy collector.

Inspired by Jacques-Arsène d'Arsonval, architect and engineer Dominic Michaelis, his son Alex Michaelin (also an architect), and Trevor Cooper-Chadwick are developing a new technique called Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) that takes advantage of differences in temperature between the ocean surface sea (up to 29°C in the tropics) and water a kilometer down (which is typically 5°C). Here's how it works: warmer surface water is used to heat liquid ammonia, converting it into vapor, which expands to drive a turbine -- which in turn produces electricity. The ammonia is then cooled using cold water from the ocean depths, returning it into a liquid state so the process can start all over again.

Valverde is the favourite of my favourite sports commentators, so my TV was overjoyed :-)

A less funny diversion. I happened to also read up on the state of the doping investigation kicked off by the raid in Spain in 2006. I see the issue practically ended in Spanish courts! Apparently, the majority of the dopers, who are allegedly top footballers and tennis players rather than cyclists, have never been revealed. But there were rumours about Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Can any one of our Spanish contingent find background articles from when the trial ended without finding anyone guilty? This really stinks to high heaven.

I'm recovering from a few parties (friend's birthday, 4th).  I stayed out until 3am the other night, which I haven't done in years.  I feel so old.

The weather here is perfect, if a little hot for me.  But for Chicago, it just doesn't get this good very often...

Also, the Cubs won against the Cards last night (only Maryb can understand the import of this comment) so I'm giving my family some heat for it.  lol.

Cat is happy she can finally sleep without bombs going off outside for the past 48 hours.

I've acquired a free-kea bookcase.

Most of the bars/restaurants I go to shut down at 2 I think.

Leaving a houseparty at 3am and finding the trains have stopped running.  It's been a few years since I've done such a thing.  Besides, this is Chicago.  Everything closes early, unlike NY, so there is that creepy deserted streets feel at 3am.

How old are you?  (I'm 33)

Some smokers are. The majority are not.

Expecting to be able to smoke anywhere you want at any time without asking people around you if it's a problem is NOT a sign of tolerance. Not smoking for 10 minutes every 15 minutes is NOT a sign of tolerance. Throwing cigarette butts all over the place is NOT a sign of tolerance.

But I'm trying to quit it, and I ask permission to smoke or I easily abstain from smoking when there are other people who do not smoke or I'm in enclosed spaces. No problem with me.

Now firmly esconsed at Chateau Melo somewhere in mid Italy. It's a really lovely area and his house is nicely remote.

So to earn my keep I set about demolishing a failed polytunnel. i was doing fine until I discovered they'd buried all the supports at least a foot underground. Digging them out gave me huge blisters on my hands so i had to stop. I was a little relieved as it saved me from "mad dogs and english(wo)men go out in the noonday sun".

so I had a loooong bath (he has a solar water heater so there's oodles of hot water) and then went out and got a pizza.

Think i might be enjoying this ??

Actually, come to think of it, I do do marriage counselling...

Buy an Ergorest for your wife. ;-)

Sounds like carpal tunnel syndrome at beginning stages, from experience.  Please take it seriously because the inflammation can make the pain spread up to the shoulder and make you miserable for months.

Get a medical wrist brace and wear it as much as you can.  I don't want to be Jeromeless, even if you growl at me.  (:

P.S.  melo, Jerome needs you!

yeah, i need me too...

take care j, try reversing the stress habit-positions, pulling on the fingers to open the palms and stretch the knucklejoints so to give a chance for the synovial fluid to enter and bathe the whole joint.

get a new mouse too, i like the logitec wireless for ergonomics, but any variety in size and shape would help.

repetitive stress is a bastard, so easy to fall into, and so sneakily incremental.

get deep massage in the forearm and palms, avoiding the wrist itself until the condition is repaired.

We lost power for a few hours today.

Traffic lights and their ilk were out for a couple of miles around, but it doesn't seem to have been enough of an event to register anywhere on the web. So I'm still (metaphorically only, thank goodness) in the dark as to what happened.

However, just about the last thing I did before the power went down was to buy a Eurostar ticket.

See some of you in September  :)
