In this highly dynamic composition including a direct shot of the sun, I managed to avoid both overexposure and underexposure, and framed the fast moving nuclear bomb very well.

I'm taking a week off from politics and current events.

seeing as its quiet, i decided to empty the growth from my guttering, realising I hadnt a long enough ladder, i decided that the best thing was totake the ladder, place it on the roof of the porch, and climb up from there

Note the small lip on the right hand side of the porch, especially the inch long piece that juts out round the corner at the rear end

that meant that while I was stupidly at the top of the ladder, when the bottom edge slipped on the wet that i was dropping from the top and propelled me face first towards the porch roof, that little edge causght one of the legs of the ladder and prevented serious injury.

eek

A better way - a safe way - would have been to position the ladder central to the small window, tie rope to both of the ladder's uprights, and run those ropes to a 4x4 extending some distance inside the room with the window.  (I hope that is clear.)  That way should the ladder slip the ropes held by the 4x4 would prevent the top of the ladder slipping past the roof's eaves.

I know, getting the other person in the house to stand on the bottom was actually my preferred solution, but vertigo before she reached the top of the porch put paid to that plan. I knew it was a stupid idea when i was doing it, all my own fault, fortunately I came away with just a few grazes on one of my wrists, and a very largedose of adrenaline.

And he needs to check the fasteners to ensure the slates aren't working lose from cracks or breakages.

In fact, he should strip the slates and inspect the sheathing for water damage and dry rot. Might as well put down a coat of water shedding sealant.  When replacing the slates a dry-rot protecting putty (aka, 'Monkey Snot') should be put around every fastener being they are driven home.

And while he is doing that the joists and beams should be inspected and, if any problems are seen or suspected they need to be replaced too.

And check, replace or repair, and retighten/seal, as necessary, the facia, eaves, and gutters.

Don't forget the downspouts!

Fob it off on someone else.  (LOL)

An ongoing, slow-moving theater piece in which I'm the director [planter and occasional water-bearer], while the actors do all the heavy lifting. What is there not to love?!

Green beans, vine-ripened yellow and red tomatoes, alpine strawberries, cassis [early summer récolte; what a treat]. And, brand new - figs, this year! Hoping there will be enough hot sun left in the season that they'll ripen. Eggplant, furthermore, with their distinctive leaves and sweet, lavender flowers, which bees love.

It may be a small production, but the response has been positive : -)

I saw a list somewhere of the flowers that bees love - quite a lot to do with their look under UV light. We should all be planting such flowers before the little buggers disappear forever.

We should all be planting such flowers before the little buggers disappear forever.

I couldn't agree more! And it needn't take much effort.

Here's a reasonably good, short-list of common bee favorites, many of which are considered 'undesireable weeds', by gardeners. Heh, heh.

In my experience I've noted that bees flock to blossoms of native lavender [nb: they snub hybrid varieties], nasturtium, aster / borage, spring sage and rosemary, eggplant [massively], tomato, sunflower ... all very easy to grow, even on a windowsill.

Hmm, this may be diary material; there's so much to be said ...

Had it not been for a missing cable, I would have been posting some gems from last night's party. Sorry. I bought my daughter an Olympus 510 for her studies and had the opportunity to play with it myself. I was impressed.

The party was one of those dos with a smattering of tuxes, where all the waiters come out en masse to serve, and in some mysterious way one's champagne glass is always full. Out on the cocktail terrace I had the occasion to turn to a fellow guest and ask ' So how's the hedge fund business treating you?". I have never found the right moment to use such a phrase before, and hopefully never will again. The poor man choked.

My singing daughter brought the house down again with 3 numbers (17, 23 and 52), and I must say - you'll be hearing more of her over the next two years.

I spent a good deal of time arguing about 'Dark Knight', with other smokers, under the hotel marquee.

There's a thoughtful review by John Truby

But I don't buy it.
