Pressing the Tire Gauge Advantage: Advertising Practical Energy Solutions

Now that Obama has evidently won the tire gauge battle it is time to press that advantage.  The Obama campaign or another group should produce commercials that go farther.  Even a few interested people could make such ads and get them placed on TV through an organization like SaysMeTV, the group that the Get FISA Right group is now working with to place their ads.

Here's the draft for one such spot I'd like to see:

Even John McCain admits that keeping your tires properly inflated will save you gas and save you money.  Immediately.
You can save more gas and more money through proper maintenance of your vehicle:
change your oil regularly,
replace your air and oil filters,
get regular tune-ups,
and keep your wheels aligned.
We know these measures work.
Today.
Sometimes the change we can believe in is the change that is simply common sense.

Here's another:

Solar is civil defense.
A small solar electric cell can power the flashlight, radio, and extra set of batteries
we are all supposed to have on hand in case of emergency.
Add a hand-cranked or a foot pedalled generator
and you can have emergency survival power
day and night from sunlight or human muscle.
Solar is civil defense.
Let's begin to use it.

Here are a couple that I wrote over twenty years ago:

After you've tightened up all the windows for winter -
caulked and weatherstripped,
put storm windows on the outside
or inside or both -
think of the sun.
A south-facing window is already a solar collector
and every sunny day is free heat.
With night insulation
you can save the heat you collect during the day.
A sunny window can be a greenhouse, too,
for flowers
or food.
Think of the sun.

A south-facing porch can become a sunspace
and help heat your home on sunny winter days.
You can transform your porch inexpensively
with plastic or glass.
Add plants and a sunspace becomes a greenhouse.
Water, stone, or chemical heat storage
can keep your greenhouse warm into the night.
A greenhouse is a fine place for a solar water heater too,
even a hot tub.
Think of the sun.

Over the years, I've even produced a couple of these spots on my own.  They aren't very good but should give you an idea of what I'm driving at.

Solar History

One Square Foot of Sunlight

Homefront Advantage

Publicizing practical and immediately useful energy ideas could change the whole energy "debate" (and I use that term very loosely) in this election year.  Now, if only somebody who actually had the skills to make decent video would pick up on the idea.

Aren´t these ideas already promoted in govt. and utilities PSA´s?  Or are those old-fashioned ideas?

These are good ideas, but the campaign(s) have got to go a hell of a lot farther to actually implement savings and renewable energy power facilities.  Fast.

The latest government PSA campaign I've seen stars Energy Hog and doesn't give too much real information.  Most of the energy PSAs I've seen over the years basically refer you to some website or phone number or post office box for further information.

I've never seen a PSA which explains simple solar principles.  That is, except for the ones I've produced myself (see above).

If you see anything that you think fits my description, please let me know.

While you're probably right, I think it has to be framed to ensure that the common sense solution is a uniquely democratic value. Otherwise the republicans will just steal the message and you'll have bought their ads for them
