Arrived home with sunshine, but that was it - right now we are having a Prague like rain, or better pouring.

Prague is a great city, without the meetup I might never have gone there - so I am glad I went.

But the company was fun too - so all in all a great trip. Am lookin forward to the next one to Paris. :-)

I was home yesterday to rain that went to showers and now it's cloudy but very breezy and the ever present threat of rain.

apparently it's like that till Saturday when there's a rumour of sunshine (or a break in the clouds at least).

Prague is great. I have a lot of photos of buildings for a diary, but InWales has suggested a way to avoid bandwidth clutter. I'll await her return to provide details.

Bandwidth clutter can be avoiding by only posting a link to the online album in which the photos are held. Then people can see the thumbnails and choose which photos to take a closer look at.

I will not be able to get mine sorted and posted until I am home next week.

I've heard they're vaguely familiar with it.

More importantly, do they pass the Izzy Test?

Russian military unit leaves Georgian city | U.S. | Reuters
GORI, Georgia (Reuters) - A column of Russian tanks and armoured vehicles left the Georgian city of Gori on Tuesday in what Russian officials said was the start of the pull-back demanded by the West.

A Reuters reporter saw four armoured personnel carriers and up to three tanks start up their engines and move out of Gori, which Russian forces had occupied this month in a conflict over Georgia's breakaway South Ossetia region.

The move followed a NATO call for Russia to respect a peace deal with Georgia and pull out its troops, although alliance members were cool on a U.S. demand that NATO consider scaling back ties with Moscow.

"This is one of the first units to be pulled out," said an official from Russia's foreign ministry, which arranged for reporters to watch the column leave. The unit's commander said they were heading for the Russian city of Vladikavkaz.

BBC NEWS | Africa | Zambia's president dies in France
Zambia's leader Levy Mwanawasa, 59, has died in a Paris hospital after suffering a stroke in June.

Vice-President Rupiah Banda, who is expected to take over as acting leader, made the announcement on state TV.

President Mwanawasa suffered a stroke at an African Union summit in Egypt and was then flown to France, where he had remained in hospital.

He came to prominence recently for being one of the African leaders most critical of the violence in Zimbabwe.

Phonie and Frauddie through the floor!  Down 30% again in just the last few days.

FRE below 5.  I wouldn't bet on it lasting.

So when do we start placing bets on the whole banking system?

I imagine right now Bernanke is at the back of his wardrobe sucking a corner of his comfort blanket.

But then again, how determined are they to prevent the system going down ? I'm sure tehre's all sorts of ingenious schemes these guys could invent to put lipstick on the pig and pretend all is well for another six months (while they ensure all their funds are safely elsewhere). I'm sure there's a lot of consolidation that can be done using pseudo-solvent parts of the banking system to rescue the series of Bear Stearns.

Heck, they could even write off huge chunks of foreign debt by giving it to whichever indebted nation is stupid enough to want to buy Wall St.

But regulate ? Nationalise ? what are you ? A commie ?

See this in the Salon:

Melanchthon:

Bloomberg.com: News

Ben S. Bernanke is still trying to define which financial institutions it's safe to let fail. The longer it takes him to decide, the tougher the decision becomes.

Yes. I was genuinely torn. Taking you both down to Lyon would have been a blast, I'm sure a great conversation would ensue. However, I had such agood time last year in Paris with the rest of the pissheads gang that I'd really like to see if that can happen again.

So if I may, I'll come down on the Monday and see you, or if it's more convenient, I can be there on Wednesday instead.

As always, Krugman is invaluable:

Paul Krugman - Op-Ed Columnist - New York Times Blog

Be a mensch, my parents always told me -- meaning, take responsibility for your actions.

The truly astonishing thing about Alan Greenspan's performance since the bubble he insisted was "most unlikely" burst, inflicting the macroeconomic damage he said it wouldn't, has been his lack of menschhood -- his inability to own up to his mistakes.

The way the RSS feed is set up for this site only those articles which are posted to the front page show up. Since many of these are "open thread" or "Salon News" this doesn't really show recent activity for the site.

It would be nice if this could be modified to show the recommended diaries as well. I have no idea if the software permits this, but I thought I'd offer the suggestion anyway.

Okay, so Biden says he's not the guy.  Maybe he's lying.  Or doesn't know.  Since I highly doubt it's Kaine now, that narrows me down to two picks:

(1) Richardson
(2) Hillary

And for the last, oh, twelve hours or so, I've had this nagging feeling.  I forgot my badge this morning, so I had to go stand in the security office to get a temp one.  They play CNN on the tv in it, and the anchors brought up Hillary as a potential veep.  And the little gears in my head started turning, thinking about the various mixed-messages that had been "leaking" -- fake ones (damn, this guy is good at preventing real leaks) -- out of Camp O on veep stuff.

Now I've had the suspicion that, while Richardson would cement Obama's win in New Mexico, along with perhaps Colorado and even Nevada, Richardson would probably not be necessary or even optimal to get what we need to get out West.  And, for some reason, I get the sense the Obama campaign thinks that, too.

And that's leaves us with....

Going to collect my thoughts on this and post on it tomorrow.

One thing's for sure: The press hasn't the slightest idea who it is anymore.  Nor the blogs.  Obama is playing everybody like a fiddle.  It's going to be an exciting next few days.  And a helluva convention.

Great news about Rachel Maddow.

Although I'd rather her or Keith as VP than Hilary. One of the things I've been saying since god knows when is that Obama has no actual weakness for a VP to cover, so he doesn't need a positive choice, he just needs to avoid a choice with negatives. And Hilary is the biggest negative on the planet, heck running with Nixon wouldn't be as bad as Hilary.

I know it's not fair but only she will energise the repugs this autumn. All the groups staying away from McCain will suddenly jump on board. And what would Obama want Bill back on board for ? He's a grade-A liability as the primaries showed. It's not as if that'd even shut PUMA up, cos they're repugs anyway.

Hilary is the worst choice he could make. It's not fair but that's the way it is.
