Hi ET folks. Twank here.  I'm new at open-threading so please bear with me. "I'm a virgin; be gentle."

In Frank Schnittger's recent entry "Anti-Americans should stop masquerading as anti-war" I asked the following question:

Do you think a series of diaries on "the embryonic police state" would be of interest here at ET?  For the first time yesterday I heard Olbermann use that term and I thought, I can't stop it so why not document it in a series of diaries?  What think you?

I have since received the following responses:

"I say go for it." Drew J Jones

"go for it!"  author Frank

"Absolutely. Go for it!"  dvx

"Start slow. Make the definition clear. Keep each essay short, and you will have something." siegestate

"And don't forget ET rules: focus on facts and data, always mention (and link to) sources, etc..."  and "Definitely yes. It would be a good idea."
  Melanchthon

"Absolutely. Among other things, the same tendencies can be seen in Canada as well. We aren't nearly as far down the road as the US is, but we are still on that road.

I have a hunch we aren't the only other country considering toying with the implementation of police state."  edwin

"And our own government is definitely trying to put more police in the French state: surveillance cameras, speed cameras, military in the airports and train stations, ISPs enrolled as content cops, frequent ID checks on everyone black or brown, you name it..." Bernard

That's it so far.  You folks tend to be SOOO polite that you might hesitate to voice a negative comment so let me begin.

"Twank.  You have proven to be a worthless loudmouth who posts absurd comments which we tolerate and ignore.  Yes, the diary you propose has merits but YOU are the last person to head up such a project.  Go back to posting inane little comments which seems to be the extent of your abilities."

Next.  Let's hear from more of ETs finest.  I'll check back in 5-6 hours.  Bye.

It's amazing! You read our collective mind!... ;-)

More seriously, you don't need approval to post a diary. Just write it and post it. Approval will come through recommendations and comments.

By the way, "the embryonic police state" is a really interesting subject. We certainly are aware of it through American blogs, but, apart from some anecdotes,  we (at least me) have little information on the way it is implemented. We could then compare with what we are experiencing in our own countries.

At the risk of repeating myself (not that that has ever worried me): Go for it. There are a lot of facets to this topic, and all of them are important.

Just write that first diary. The comments you get will help you boost your project enormously.

Big Green Apple: Mayor says answer to energy needs is blowin' in wind

LAS VEGAS - Windmills atop the Brooklyn Bridge. Green power in Fresh Kills. The Statue of Liberty's torch powered by an ocean windfarm.

That's the vision for a green revolution Mayor Bloomberg laid out in a speech at the National Clean Energy Summit on Tuesday night.

"Perhaps companies will want to put wind turbines atop bridges and skyscrapers, or use the enormous potential of powerful off-shore winds miles out off the Atlantic Coast, where turbines could generate roughly twice the energy," Bloomberg told the summit.

"We don't generate a lot of electricity in New York City," he said. "But we can work on using less. And in New York, we're determined to do what no other city has ever attempted, and that is to keep our energy usage at or near its current level even as our population grows."

by Fran (fran at eurotrib dot com) on Wed Aug 20th, 2008 at 12:02:43 PM EST
(on bridges or skyscrapers) are mostly a silly idea, because the wind is of poor quality to be harvested (too much turbulence, etc).

Saving energy is a better idea, and wind farms outside is fine too (or in industrial areas, where they don't disturb things and can easily be plugged in).

In the long run, we're all dead. John Maynard Keynes

It's mainly a PR stunt for the real idea which is to sell New Yorkers on massive offshore windfarms off the Atlantic coast of the city where there is plenty of good wind. The article said that if they really wanted to they could put enough in to supply 10% of the city's power.

You either nationalize the banks or you nationalize the mortgages.  Otherwise, they're all toast.

 - Nouriel Roubini

Somehow I missed that statement in the NYT profile.  Scary stuff from the guy who's been pretty much dead-on the whole time.

I was listening to the morning talk show on the radio on my way to work today in the car, and I was amazed to find the host discussing the recent prediction that one of the big banks was about to collapse.  Citi, Wachovia, Bank of America -- who would it be?  A lot of callers wondering if they should get their money out.  Many others simply saying, "Fuck it, we're screwed anyway."

Odd topic, since the talk show usually involves goofy discussions of sports, booze, music, etc.

It reminded me of the story of a stock broker who overheard a janitor discussing his portfolio in 1929, and knew at that moment that a feverish boom had created an amazing bubble, and that a once-in-a-lifetime crash was coming.  The stock broker sells off the next morning.  The market goes through the floor.

"Dow 9,000" may yet prove too optimistic for even Dr Doom.

Bloomberg.com: Spanair Plane Crashes in Madrid, Killing More Than 140 People (August 20)
A Spanair SA MD-82 jetliner broke up and caught fire after skidding off the runway at Madrid's Barajas International airport, killing more than 140 people in Spain's worst aviation accident since 1985.

The single-aisle plane, manufactured by Boeing Co. unit McDonnell Douglas, crashed while attempting to take off for the Canary Islands with 175 passengers and crew on board, said an official from Spanair, a unit of Scandinavian carrier SAS Group.

Television pictures showed a column of smoke billowing from the runway and a helicopter dropping water on the crash site. Dozens of fire engines and police vehicles attended the scene following the accident after 2 p.m. local time.

McCain now admits he wants to bring back the draft:

QUESTIONER: If we don't reenact the draft, I don't think we'll have anyone to chase Bin Laden to the gates of hell.

MCCAIN: Ma'am, let me say that I don't disagree with anything you said.

No panic yet.  New ad airing in Georgia:

Now that's a good ad, and Georgians will know it well, since Reed's ties to Abramoff cost him the Lt Governor's job in 2006.

The quid pro quo accusation is a good one, too.

McCain just said the draft thing today, so we'll see if the Obama campaign has the brains to go after it.  Comes at a good time, too, since both Richard Clarke and Susan Rice are now slowly rolling out a McCain As Warmonger theme.

The other thing I'd point out is that, while the race has narrowed a bit, it's hardly the catastrophic ZOMGWE'RETEHD0000OOOO000000MEDZ! thing that the space cases on the American blogs have stirred up.  I'm left to think, Wait, so with all the bullshit about Obama being an UPPITY FURRENIGGER!!! ("presumptuous"), and all these silly "celebrity" ads, the best Grandpa Psycho can muster is getting to within two points, on the eve of the veep pick and the Democratic convention?

Sorry, but while that's slightly, and just slightly, worrying to the Democrat in me, it's pretty damned funny to the analyst in me.

Polls, schmolls.

Until the pollsters started to muck around with their internals McCain was running in the low to mid 40s.  The last SUSA poll had, apparently, 41% Republicans, to 30/29 Dem/Independent.

Query: has the race tightened or is it an artifact of the polling methodology?

I don't know.  I don't claim to be a stats maven.

What I do know is that the single biggest factor to winning an election is getting your people to vote.  The best thing is to get your hard-core to vote early so you can expend resources working outward to margin.  To do this the campaign needs a lot of people to do a lot of truly boring, tedious, dull work.

We're not in the full-bore campaign.  We're in the period where the basis is laid for the full-bore campaign.

Senator Obama, by all accounts, is leveraging his primary campaign organization into a national GOTV effort.  Senator McCain, not so much; he seems to be depending on a 4 year old Rol-a-Dex/database.  Now it may be the McCain campaign is getting people in to do the work - I don't know.  What I do know, again, is Obama does have the people and they are doing the work.

Even with the mucking around on the methodology, McCain's still at 42/43.  It's still that ~43% ceiling vs Obama's ~45% floor.

Like I said, the underlying dynamics really haven't changed.  It felt like a seven-point race a month ago.  It feels like a four- to five-point race today.

It is rather Kerry-with-a-brain.

I think he understands more about the Rove-ulators than Kerry and Gore did. But he doesn't understand the kind of plastic American machismo needed to prove that he's one of the boys, and therefore the male vote is safe with him.

I'd put him well ahead of Kerry simply because they seem to have made short work of Jerome Corsi, but, to be fair to Kerry, hindsight is always 20/20.  Gore...we'll see.

Their message has a few teeth, but it needs fangs.  The "McCain doesn't know how many houses he owns" thing is now distracting from the far-more-important (and far-more-effective) draft issue.

If I were putting national narrative together, both are gifts from the Almighty: "John McCain wants to draft your kids to fight more wars (Russia, Iran, on and on) while he and his rich lobbyist friends live the good life."
