Test of the Google Language Tools

by ATinNM
Mon Sep 29th, 2008 at 01:10:00 AM EST

A key stumbling block ET faces is the almost 100% use of English as the communication language.  Regularly over the years this has been noted as a barrier to greater participation by EU citizens. To counter this problem the suggestion has been made, several times, that the diaries and comments be automatically translated.  To my knowledge an experiment has never been conducted to see how useful these tools are.

This diary is intended to be a preliminary, but substantive, test of the Google Language Tool.

Basic Text

The basic text for translation is taken from Jerome's diary "Some lessons from Bailout Week."  This text was chosen, from several others, as

  1.  It was a "typical" FP article

  2.  The vocabulary and sentence construction seemed "typical"

  3.  The writer is a non-native speaker of English with an excellent grasp of the language.

Criteria

When reading the translation look for:

  1.  Accuracy -  Does the translation convey the meaning of the original text?  Are the ideas adequately conveyed?

  2.  Tone - Is the translation in the same "College Level" style of the original?

  3.  Ease - Would a native speaker of the language into which the translation was made be able to quickly grasp the ideas or does it take effort?

  4.  Cross-Language Accuracy - For the polyglots among us, does the translation in Spanish, say, 'fit' the translation in German, say?

Translations

The English text has been translated, using the Google Language Tools, into:

Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish, and Ukranian.

Please take the poll at the end.

Thank You for your participation.

English Text:

The consequences of the financial crisis are so dire that the lesson here should not be that a bailout is necessary (it is, at this point) - but to acknowledge that the financial sector has the power to hold the rest of the economy to ransom during both good times and bad times and thus that it need to be emasculated so that we never get again to the stage where a bailout is necessary. The lesson is that the financial world cannot behave responsibly, if left to its own devices and thus should not be left to its own devices.

Here is the German Translation made from the Spanish Translation:

And taking that back into English to view the ENGLISH -> SPANISH -> GERMAN -> ENGLISH result:

The consequences of the financial crisis is so dire that the lesson here should not be that an emergency is necessary (that is, at this point) - but to recognize that the financial sector has the power to the rest of the economic recovery - both during the good times and bad times, and they should therefore be emasculated, so that never again to the stage where a rescue is necessary. The lesson is that the financial world can not behave responsibly if they are to their fate, and therefore should not be abandoned their fate.

Compare Original:

The consequences of the financial crisis are so dire that the lesson here should not be that a bailout is necessary (it is, at this point) - but to acknowledge that the financial sector has the power to hold the rest of the economy to ransom during both good times and bad times and thus that it need to be emasculated so that we never get again to the stage where a bailout is necessary. Except for the parenthetical comment

"that is, at this point" <>  "it is, at this point"

a rather good job.

Another online translator manages to deal with the "dire" and "emasculated" problems. It seems to have a better knowledge of German grammar, not leaving out verbs as with Google, but with the tendency, instead, of overdoing it.

Thanks! This is what this translator came up with in French:

the consequences of the financial crisis are so dire that the lesson here should not be that a bailout is necessary (it is, at this point) - but to acknowledge that the financial sector has the power to hold the rest of the economy to ransom during both good times and bad times and thus that it need to be emasculated so that we never get again to the stage where a bailout is necesary. The lesson is that the financial world cannot behave responsibly, if left to its own devices and thus should not be left to its own devices

=>

It recognized "dire", but there are several bad, even incomprehensible, passages (bolded).

"necesary" is no doubt due to the typo in the original ("neces(s)ary"). Which in turn means that the originals to translate should be as error-free as possible, or the translation engine will be thrown.

Thanks for taking the initiative on this, AT! But just a demurrer:

the financial world cannot behave responsibly, if left to its own devices and thus should not be left to its own devices.

to =>

the financial world can not behave responsibly if they are to their fate, and therefore should not be abandoned their fate.

is hardly a "rather good job". Is Jérôme arguing in favour of regulation, or in favour of a bailout?

Note on the English-French translation: it needs editing to be of any use.

I don't think people are going to make the effort to read text which is ambiguous, contains untranslated terms, and is sometimes plain mistaken. After a time (variable with individuals), readers tire and don't bother any more.

In other words, though the translation tool does a good deal of the work (), such translations still need editorial attention from somebody competent in the language in question.

( I use Google translation with tribext every time I post a French-English translation. It hasn't happened once yet that I can post the Google translation directly without editing.)

The engines behind these translators will improve. Personally I think it is a fantastic achievement to have such a 'free' user-friendly translator at all.

It is the beginning of a process that will ensure the continuation of culture/language biodiversity.

All this is true, but where does it get us right now? We can't count on automatic translators alone, we would need editorial attention by people proficient in each language. It's a major obstacle to multilingual blogging.

Think convergence, not solution. It is a place to start. The way I see it, we can begin by designing a consortium of blogs in a variety of languages, where the main interaction between them will be translated pieces initially.

I should put up the beginning of the technical discussion of the ET recoding as discussed in Paris. This will however have to be another day. My parents phoned a few hours ago letting me know they will be arriving tonight rather than tomorrow. So I have some more speed cleaning to do in order to have a presentable flat. Iiiihhh!

I agree. Good content is available here every day. The effort to auto translate and edit is minimal compared to starting up with locally generated content.

The aim being to kick start a language version of ET, that would then develop also its own content. The ET parent would be essentially a syndicator, and would always feed key diaries into the other languages.

It is not a new model. That's how the big wire services work. They also have agreements whereby local content of more than national or language importance is also syndicated to the rest of the family. Top down and bottom up.

Were this to work, it would give ET the opportunity, as a representative of opinion in media etc, to claim the entire membership of the family - which eventually could be substantial.

Spanish Translation is abominable: a Spanish-speaking could understand very little: he would have to guess, rather. He would lose or interpret badly the nuances.

This would be a correct Spanish translation, taking into account accuracy, style and linguistic form itself:

TinNM: I would like to send some things on special structure of Spanish.

It seems to me that other languages are more easily translatable, because they do not have certain rules: word order more flexible, functions and forms of verbal, passive, and so on.

From my Spanish to English:

The consequences of the financial crisis is so dire that the removable lesson from it should not be that action is needed to endorse (that's the thing, at this point), but acknowledge that the financial sector has the power to dominate the rest of the economy to their rescue during both good and bad times, and therefore it should be castrated (the sector) in such a way that does not ever go back to a stage where a rescue is necessary. The lesson is that the financial world is not able to behave responsibly, if they are left to their own discretion and therefore should not be left to his own performance.

For some reason, the French, German, Italian and Norwegian translations do not appear to be able to identify "dire" in the first sentence.

It's not such an obscure word, after all.

Strange. In most languages, it's translated (by some degree of "terrible" "catastrophic", etc), but not in the ones you mention. Worse yet in French, dire is the verb "to say", so adds confusion.

What surprise me, is that I'd have expected all the language tools to work with the same (English) word list. (When they just leave the word as is, it most likely means it's absent from the word list).

Just to let you and the other 'Chinese' speakers here know.

I'm not dissing you.

I considered using the (so called) 'Chinese' option at Google, decided not.  'Chinese' is the label for a language group roughly equivalent to 'Germanic' or 'Romance.'  Coupled with the alphabetic/ideogramic problems it seemed wise -- especially since I know nothing of 'Chinese' -- to focus on the European languages.

It would be a good idea to learn how the Google Language Tool translates English to 'Chinese.'  I suspect, however, the results would be "interesting" but not wonderful.
