[FINAL UPDATE] Diary concerning Friday evening Paris meetup.

by LEP
Fri Sep 12th, 2008 at 04:50:11 PM EST

Just a short diary to organize a Friday evening meetup on Sept. 19.
I am suggesting that we meet aroud 3:30 p.m. at Pere Lachaise cemetary in the north of Paris, one of the most famous cemetaries in the world (Jim Morrison is there as is Oscar Wilde and hundreds of famous others), and a place I have never been to. We would tour that for a couple of hours and then amble over to the Belleville Chainatown for a 7 p.m. dinner.
Those who could not make the tour could meet us at the restaurant.
As far as I know the following ET'ers are interested.
Chris C, and Solveig, Frank S., Fran, Melanchton and yours truly, LEP.
If anyone else want to join us, either for the tour or just the dinner please let me know and I'll hunt out a restaurant next week. Update [2008-9-6 4:23:35 by LEP]: If you want to read about Pere Lachaise here's the link to wikipedia.

I have a different suggestion if visiting a cemetary doesn't turn on a lot of people; ie., to visit the Mouffetard quarter just behind the Latin Quarter. It's very old and picturesque filled with cafe's and restaurants. It shouldn't be packed with tourists in September. That might please Helen more since we can walk a little, drink, walk some more and then eat. Please express your preference.

[FINAL UPDATE] OK- Quartier Mouffetard it is. We will meet at 5:30-6:00 p.m. at the metreo station "Cardinal Lemoine" which is on line 10 which most of you will be using to come east from Passy. (If you are taking Line 6 from Passy you change to Line 10 at "Le Motte Piquet-Grennelle" direction Gare d'Austerlitz and it's 9 stops from there. Here's the list of who I think is coming: LEP, dvx, Chris C. and Solveig, Bob and Liliana, Helen, Metavision, Izzy, someone? geezer in Paris, (In Wales, Melanchton, Metatone, Migeru, Linca Frank S. and Fran? for dinner.) Please add your name in the comments section if I missed anyone. If we get more I'll have to head there next week and find a restaurant that can handle us. (I always draw the difficult assignments.)

I'll put my portable telephone number here a few days before the meetup.

Thanks LEP. May I suggest you add the word Paris to the titel, so people know which Friday we are talking about.

Sound like a good idea, I also never been to the Pere Lachaise cemetary, but have been told repeatedly that I should visite it when I have the opportunity. At it looks like the opportunity has arrived.

I also assume Izzy will be joining in too.

LEP,
As is always the case, I will be pleased to participate, with entourage. Provided it is possible for me to get into the restaurant.
I think the cemetery would have been a great idea-- it is an amazing place, filled with the macabre and the lovely, on rolling ground that makes a good settings for storytelling.
Filled with the fragments and rich scents of fabulous lives.
Ah, well.
Mouffetard is also a great place--- to explore and drink, and graze.

I found this restaurant at 25 rue Mouffetard which from the photo appears to be no problem for you. It has excellent facilities and the food was decent. I'll write another diary later today but here's two photos.

Thanks, LEP. The key is steps. Can do one step, small to medium in size.

Will check it out this week if I have time.

Your tour last year got sidetracked by everybody just wanting to sit and chat and that we should meet somewhere like a nice cafe and arrive over an hour or so so's we can catch up before we go do the touristy thing. else you might find the same thing happening again.

I'm not sure you've factored that in.

LEP if you have not been to the cemetary before then I'd suggest you get hold of a map - especially if people want to find Jim Morrison's plot, which isn't easy to find.

There are also lots of memorials relating to the Holocaust which are quite moving.

Do they have a website to look what kind of food they serve.

It looks with the beer places I will have to go and look for food elsewhere first, before joinging the group - as except for the french fries and the side salade everything contains meat. At least at the place linca recommended.

I did, but all the salads contain meat! and which are the vegetarian dishes. The Flammiche the Poireaux often has lard or ham in it. So what do you see that is vegetarian?

The last salad-"chevre chaud" (hot goat cheese seems to have no meat. There's the poireaux and also the onion tarte which may be vegetarian.
Do you eat cheese and eggs?

In any event I will try to scout the restaurants in the Quartier Mouffetard next week and try to find something suitable for all.

you know poireaux and onion tartes usually have lard in it.

If I can avoid cheese and eggs I do so, especially goat cheese, but if I can't avoid it I might eat some eggs.

Though I would probably be happiest with some vegetable salad, without cheese, fish or meat.

You can always ask the restaurant to "hold the lard" as we used to say in the restaurant business. Actually, in New York in the late 50's, I used to order a "BLT down, hold the mayo." Translation: Bacon lettuce and tomato sandwich on toast without mayonaise.

But it seems not in France. Twice now i was over the boarder and the bacon, chicken or ham or shrimp were mixed into the salad and could not be taken out. so I took a salad with shrimps because my friend said she would take them, but by the time I fished them all out, there was not much left, and I was still hungry. Fortunaly when I got home I could ear more, but in Paris I can not do that.

It is difficult to leave out the lard from a tarte as they are usually prepared in advance. But if they willing to make a big and I mean big vegetable salad I can go with that.

Experience has made me cautious! :-)

Salade au chèvre chaud, pretty much invariably, will have bacon cubes in it.

Anyway, it's a great place for a beer but I would not have it in my top 300 of places to go to eat.

There's no schedule. For two years we've met in Paris in May, now it's moved to Sept. Other meetings scheduled are possibly in Liverpool on Oct 18th and Cardiff Nov 29th for InWales 30th birthday party and photography exhibition.

There have also been meetings in
Barcelona
Carcassonne (x2)
Tolouse
London (x2)
Prague
Stirling

There are constant murmourings about Brussels & Berlin. As Cologne is now a very cheap return train from London that becomes a convenient possibility for several of us. Early next year I'm sure that it wouldn't be hard to persuade many of us northerners to go to Madrid, Lisbon or Rome. Anywhere not cold would work for me.

I think it's a case of "If you build it, we will come". Sadly, not to US till the DHS is disbanded.
