It's not unusual for resource hungry apps to need a reboot before use - some of them are really pushing the edges of what the iPhone is capable of and if other apps have tied up resources previously it can cause problems. Photobag (which I use to process pictures from the soulless on-board camera into something nicer) calls for a reboot about 50% of the time.

John Bolton and John Yoo have, to use Hunter's phrase, gone beyond the "event horizon" of satire with an NYT op-ed on the potential for the incoming President to over-reach his powers

Now hunter can be a funny guy, but even he recognises that this sort of thing goes so far beyond the bounds that it can't be touched. It's a real "Excuse me..!! {long pause of silent shock}" moment

Some things defy all attempts at satire. It is not that it is difficult to satirize them, but that they are immune. Like black holes, they pull all humor near them to a certain event horizon and then beyond, where it is torn to shreds, never to be seen again.

I share his stupefaction. They said that satire was dead when kissinger got the Nobel prize for peace, but this is something that, if not defying reality to the same extent, is at least an event of similar type. How the NYT presses could print such..such... this and not spontaneously combust like a computer in a 60s spy thriller asked "why?", I simply cannot fathom.

I seriously doubt the ALCU thing will come to anything. I simply no longer believe there is any will in DC to hold the Bushies accountable for what they have done. There was too much cross-party collusion, complicity and yes... agreement.

An awful lot of Beltway Democrats have demonstrated time and again that they believe, in their heart of hearts, that what the Bushes did was not just legal, but justified. They bought the GWoT, all of it up to and including Padilla and Guantanamo, just as surely as Fox did. That's why they have failed, again and again to defend the Constitution, to maintain their credibility, to protect Americans from an overbearing Executive drunk on its self-elevation above the law. they stopped being an opposition and became cheerleaders and still think they were right to do so, the status quo bush created is that which they now defend, little realising how much they have sold out.

Guardian - John Vidal - Severn barrage: Row breaks out over UK's biggest renewables project

Government consultants have been accused of miscalculating the costs of a project to generate vast amounts of green electricity in the Severn estuary, promoting a 10 mile-long tidal barrier strongly backed by ministers in preference to a scheme that engineers and environmentalists say is far less damaging.

Atheist bus campaign spreads the word of no God nationwide | World news | guardian.co.uk

Anyone who has spent a chilly half-hour waiting for a double-decker may already have doubted the existence of a deity. But for those who need further proof, a nationwide advertising campaign aimed at persuading more people to "come out" as atheists was launched today with the backing of some of Britain's most famous non-believers.

The principal slogan - "There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life" - can already be seen on four London bus routes, and now 200 bendy buses in London and 600 across the country are to carry the advert after a fundraising drive raised more than £140,000, exceeding the original target of £5,500.

The money will also pay for 1,000 advertisements on London Underground from next Monday and on a pair of giant LCD screens opposite Bond Street tube station, in Oxford Street. Organisers unveiled a set of quotes from public figures - including Albert Einstein, Douglas Adams and Katharine Hepburn - who have endorsed atheism, or at least expressed scepticism about a Creator. The words "That it will never come again is what makes life so sweet" are quoted from the poet Emily Dickinson.

Euroblogger Jon Worth has been involved with this campaign. I think it's a great deal of fun, as long as it'll be a one-off. See the picture he took:

I was watching the McLaughlin Group's year-in-review show.  McLaughlin accused Pat Buchanan of concentrating too much on foreign affairs, and Pat said, "Well, it wouldn't kill you to pick up an FT now and then, John!"

Other highlights, Pat Buchanan and the democrat Eleanor Clift agree the most under recognized person of the year was Howard Dean.  And in the "Sorry to see you go" category, while most people picked dead celebrities, McLaughlin chose to mourn the passing of Capitalism.

At 13:00 here in Bremen, the temperature has just risen to 0C.  It snowed about a cm or less, though anyone who actually experiences winter would never call this snow, but rather a dusting.  Still, the snow hasn't melted on the glass roof, evidence that you can build high insulation glass into your house.

I really want to live in a passive solar house.  On the Seine, with Bremen to my left and San Francisco to my right, the Maldives across the river and the Blackfeet Rez bordering Glacier National Park as my back yard.  Easy to please, i guess.

congrats, J! (and J)

You never mentioned high insulation glass when you tlaked about the roof.

How does that work anyway ? Triple glazed ? What's in the gaps between the glass ?
