Puerto Rico Refinery Fire Investigation:

Puerto Rico (Reuters) -- A malfunctioning fuel monitoring system was the likely cause of an Oct. 23 explosion and massive fire at a Puerto Rican fuel storage depot, the US Chemical Safety Board said on Tuesday. (...)  "The filling of a tank without a functioning monitoring system is the type of activity the CSB will be examining very closely," Investigator-in-Charge Jeffrey Wanko said as the agency announced a full investigation of the incident. (...) The blast resulted from the accidental overfilling of a tank with gasoline from a ship docked in San Juan harbor that occurred because of a faulty monitoring system, CSB officials said. Employees were unaware of the overfilling because the facility's computerized level monitoring system was not fully operational.  As the gasoline spilled undetected from the tank, it vaporized and spread across the facility, creating a 2,000-foot (610-metre) wide vapor cloud that ignited once it contacted an ignition source.

Couple arrested in connection with Zbot Trojan horse | Graham Cluley's blog

A man and a woman have been arrested in Manchester by officers of the Greater Manchester Police and Metropolitan Police Central e-Crime Unit (PCeU) in connection with the Zbot family of Trojan horses.

Zbot is one of the most notorious pieces of malware of recent times. It's a data-stealing Trojan horse, designed to grab information from internet users which would help hackers break into online bank accounts and social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace.

2009 World Champion Jenson Button joined joined 2008 World Champion Lewis Hamilton in the McLaren F1 driving stable today.  Well, i'm not sure about the today part, though that was my reality.

For some us this will not bring the hoped for contest between Hamilton and Kimi Raikönnen on the same team, but it will be interesting.  It's the first time two consecutive reigning champions will be in the same team.

For sure (that's an inside joke) the thousands of ET formula one freaks will be salivating over the chance for the now looming recreation of WWII, with McLaren and it's union jack drivers going up against the jack-booted Mercedes Brawns (well, they jack-booted Button out) with their all-German pairing of Rosberg and Heidfeld.  (or the rumored surprise, the return of the Schumacher guy.)

I don't know about today, i wish it was March 2010 already. Perhaps i've been sniffing high performance fumes.

Eddie Jordan says Mercedes told Button to "look for other employment," though who knows the reality, as it's also hard to imagine Mercedes not wishing to have No.1 on their car.

That Jenson in willing to go wheel to wheel with Lewis, in Lewis' team, is courageous.

Schumi is contracted to Ferrari, but Hauk hinted at a surprise, and money is able to break contracts anywhere in the world. Though i don't give much substance to the possibility, except that Schumi does wish to drive again, and unless Massa can't quite recover, there's no chance at Ferrari.  Plus Alonso would throw his toys out of the pram.

In any case these are all tiny steps towards my dream of having the world's most corrupt but technically advanced racing being powered by wind-produced hydrogen.

I don't think that's a real issue, as it reflects reality.  They both know the 2010 results are the whole game. Button "for sure" knows that many in the paddock don't consider him an elite driver, and Lewis knows he simply didn't have a horse this year.

Algeria-Egypt is on-going.

Ukraine-Greece: will Ukraine make it?

Slovenia-Russia: this could be a shocker, after the meagre 2:1 for Russia in Moscow.

Bosnia-Portugal: Bosnia could be a surprise winner, too, bu IMO that would be less of a shocker.

France-Ireland: France should win easily. But there is Domenech. Will they fire Domenech at last if Ireland wins?

Uruguay-Costa Rica: Uruguay should clinch this.

So before the match everyone said Ireland's game was to keep the ball in the air, so the French worked on control and keeping possession with short passes on the ground, right?

Wrong.

Teh Domenech is a fearsome beast.

(Anecdote: in 1973, France played Ireland in a World Cup decider. France had to win, a draw wouldn't do. France went one up at ten minutes from the end, but Ireland got one in at the last minute. France eliminated.

Heroically playing in defence for France was one Raymond Domenech.)

At the end of the game the journalists (Irish and Scottish) were saying that they would have done the same, that if you are a professional footballer that's what you do.

That is probably true but then, I don't want to ever hear again that sportsmen are role models.
Although, maybe the point is that it's precisely the kind of behaviour that is encouraged in today's world. But that makes me sick.

Once in a while I would like to be completely off-base wrong.  Unfortunately, not in this case.

Back when Obama got the Democratic nomination for president I opined - more or less - "he's a dead man walking."

Well ... Trawling for assassins: Evangelical nuts want Obama dead diary on dKos lays it out.

Tonight, Rachel Maddow aired a bonechilling interview with former fundamentalist leader Frank Schaeffer in which Schaeffer accuses evangelical zealots and far-right wing nuts of formenting violence against our president.

This new "American Taliban," Schaeffer says, is essentially "trawling for assassins," using coded, Biblical language in hopes of inciting some lunatic to kill the president.

Yea, but both JFK and Reagan were shot, so the chance that somebody will want to take a potshot at a President for whatever reason is always gonna be significant. Any president walks around with a target on their back.

The fact that he's black just adds a certain froth to the issue. however, I'm pretty sure the Secret service are pretty damn glad these guys are so open about it, cos it makes their lives a lot easier. It's the quiet ones you never hear about who'd pay the Jackal if it suited them and their motives aren't swayed by the baying of a mob.

I have found this worrisome for quite a while.  I have never been a huge fan of Obama or convinced he has the will to do what is needed, and, to date, not too much has occurred to prove me wrong.  Yet he is far better than anyone that these crazies would like.  Hell, they didn't even like McCain and only held their noses because of Palin. ("She is Ester!" according to an e-mail during the campaign from my sister-in-law!)

In the interview Timothy McVey is invoked. The good thing is that the Oklahoma City bombing proved a turning point for Clinton with the sane majority of the nation. It took the loss of those lives for most to see the craziness of the Right Wing Militia movement. Once that had occurred, it was easier to roll those crazies up.

The fundamentalists had better be careful what they ask for. An assassination attempt, successful or not, by one out of that culture could initiate an Armageddon of a sort different from what they imagine and they could become the new pariahs in the USA. That might be the one thing that could wake up the 20% or so of "independents" that they can sometimes mobilize to win elections. Or perhaps I inhabit an alternate reality.

As the Dutch said while fighting the Spanish: "It is not necessary to have hope in order to persevere."

It looks like the new train schedules starting December will have a lot of cuts, in particular concerning night trains. Gone are

  • The night train from Dortmund/Amsterdam to Milan (silver lining: no more waiting 2 hours in deserted train stations for the delayed train...)

  • Verona-Wien gone, along with all (it seems) Venice to Carinthia trains. Most (not the night train) to be replaced by buses.

  • Apparently the Salzburg-Frankfurt night train is gone. Is this true?
  • Anybody have more details? I can't find Cerbere-Metz any more, but I'm not sure if this was only a seasonal train anyway.

Cerbère-Metz is a strange one. The only connection sncf-voyages gives is with a change in Paris. There's a night train from Cerbère to Paris-Austerlitz, then the TGV Est. There are also trains with a change at Marnes-la-Vallée, but I can't find a night train.

It sure is strange. I took it several years ago: Cerbere makes sense (essentially a train from Barcelona without using Spanish tracks), but I must have been one of the few people who actually wanted to get precisely to Metz.

I was looking for it for January. But in the end I figured out that I could get a cheap fare for Hendaye-Metz via Paris, and I hope that Madrid-Hendaye will not be as expensive as Madrid-Cerbere.

I was wrong about the night train Venice-Wien, which does seem to be there. But the day trains are all gone, replaced by busses.

Another change: No Cisalpino any more. But this might be an improvement; the trains are all there, but running as normal ECs.

Just checked the MÁV timeplan draft, and the (Budapest-)Vienna-Karlsruhe-Strasbourg/-Frankfurt night train is gone... though Budapest-Munich and Budapest-Zurich survived.

In this forum post from September, I firm a confirmation of the CNL "Apus" Amsterdam/Dortmund-Milan and CNL "Eridanus" Amsterdam/Dortmund-Vienna discontinuations, though the latter will be replaced with a Cologne-Vienna run.

Part of the reason might be that DB is retiring its aging Talgo fleet.

Here is DB's night train schedule from December, though you might already have seen that.

    Dortmund/Amsterdam to Milan

...seems like it survives until Brig.

    Salzburg-Frankfurt night train is gone.

    Appears so, in DB's timeplan.

seems like it survives until Brig.

Isn't that a different train? The Milan one went via Lugano and Chiasso.

I will bet that a contemporary picture taken from the same location would show that they have come through on their boast.
