Early Friday Photography Blog No. 112

Photobucket

This week's blog will be "Rain", in homage to the change in weather.  There will also be "Photos As Usual", for anything new you'd like to delight us with.

And we will also have the usual "Ask the Expert" about anything you like, composition, technical things and so on.

Please try to keep to 600 pixels width and 100kb to 150kb max in file size and take a look at Wednesday Photography Blog No.2 for the technical bits on how to post.

Someone's new technology automatically limits width of photos shown to 600pixels. But it allows you to click and hold on the photos to see the larger version if the file is greater than 600 pixels in width.

Please do not click on post a comment but reply under one of the headers instead.

Have fun, and throw anything in, we want to see your photos!

No idea, my friend grew them from seed and then handed one of the plants over to me. I almost gave up on it and then it suddenly started to flower all over.  The chili peppers are fairly hot.

There are so many that look alike, but a friend gave me seeds for ones that looked like yours.  He called them "Peter Peppers"and here. Except, like the ones in these links they were often malformed. Oops, I've just discovered the source of their name!  Anyway, they were pretty hot and the plants prolific producers with beautiful waxy leaves. One year I canned 10 pint jars from just three or four plants.  Maybe yours are just cayennes after all.

I only have one slightly 'malformed' pepper on my plant.  It is fairly busy with peppers but I don't reckon it is as prolific as yours, nor are the leaves waxy.  Probably just cayennes or something easily available from the supermarkets here since that is how my friend came across her seeds.

Conkers aka Horse Chestnuts.  The brown 'nut' or conker isn't edible but kids (and sometimes grown ups) skewer the conker and thread string through and play 'conkers'.  You have to swing your conker at your opponent's one, in turns until one of them breaks.  If you use a fresh conker it will break easily, one a few days old shrivels a little and goes much harder.

I used to collect bags and bags of them.  They are gorgeous and silky when you first break them out of the green shell. Every year I can't resist picking up a couple when they start to fall in autumn.  I always have one on my desk and usually another in a random pocket, just to remind me of the amount of joy they gave me as a child.

One is the spinmeister for a minor political party, the other is one of Finland's foremost valve amplifier experts. The latter forced me last night to listen to an audio comparison of many guitar loudspeakers from manufacturers large and small in 'scientifically based' recordings. There were indeed audible differences, but none that couldn't be balanced out by mic type or placement.

I wish I could remember the name of the small English family loudspeaker company that his tests were intended to show off. I've always wanted to try little speakers stuck to the bridge with a volume pedal to control it and see how that owrked.

One of my old analog production tricks was to feed a recorded track back through a speaker at volume, and stick a tuned Strat live in front of it. And record the line from the Strat on a new track. This is the equivalent of sprinkling fairy dust.

If you have images on flickr, as I do, I can explain how I do it.
In your photostream, click on an image.
When it opens click on "all sizes".
Choose medium (about 333 x 500, or some size similar)
Highlight the code in the box below the image once the medium size is showing.
Copy the highlighted code
Open ET & click "post a comment"
Paste into that box.
Now from where it says    title, over & to include the " marks before > highlight & delete.
Preview & your image should show in the preview mode.
Hit post & you`re done.
I`ll check back to see if you got it. If you have a problem, say so & I will try to explain it better. It`s quite straightforward though once you do it a few times.

That was something I was wondering about, actually. This is EUROtrib, not USAtrib--although sometimes one wonders. So is it better to post pictures of beautiful mountainsides and pastures, or would people be happier to see pictures of American capitalism at work?
by asdf on Sun Nov 8th, 2009 at 11:22:11 PM EST
[ Parent ]
Wouldn`t that depend on composition, technical expertise, light & shadow etc. I don`t understand the question possibly but this is a photography thread, albeit in ET. Aren`t images universal, at least in the mind of the viewer.
Are there many instances of pictures of American capitalism at work in this ongoing Friday Photos section of this blog?
Personally I definitely prefer pix of people, places & things that demonstrate a photographic/artistic quality, such as the mountains & pastures posted above, no matter from which geographical location.
I believe though that there are some who would wonder which CEO of a mega American capitalist corporation owns the ranch-land depicted in that image.
I see it as a beautiful artistic composition.

Yes we do and I don't know for sure.  The promotional material states the D60 has the F-mount.  Before we purchase we'll take a couple of pictures with one of our lenses attached to the camera and see what happens.

With most cameras you should be able to switch AF off and go manual if you want to.

DSLRs, that is.  Here's some review on the D60.

Nikon D60 Review: 1. Introduction: Digital Photography Review

Auto Focus only for AF-S or AF-I lenses

As with the D40 and D40X, the new D60 doesn't have an built-in focus drive motor which means it can auto focus only with lenses which have their own drive motor (AF-S and AF-I lenses). The lack of a drive motor can be seen by the missing mechanical focus drive pin on the lens mount (see images below). One of the D60's new features is an electronic rangefinder to help manual focus on non AF-S / AF-I lenses.
