Happy New Year!
Photobucket

How will you be celebrating?

This week's blog will be "Old Year, New Year" and "Photos As Usual".

As usual, "Ask the Expert" about anything you like, composition, technical things and so on.

Please try to keep to 600 pixels width and 100kb to 150kb max in file size and take a look at Wednesday Photography Blog No.2 for the technical bits on how to post.

Someone's new technology automatically limits width of photos shown to 600pixels. But it allows you to click and hold on the photos to see the larger version if the file is greater than 600 pixels in width.

Please do not click on post a comment but reply under one of the headers instead.

Have fun, and throw anything in, we want to see your photos!

I'm on Hammond.

I can't play, but you only need three notes pressed and held for a fantastic sound...for several minutes,

As a user of the Hammond sound in GarageBand, I concur.  Three notes, following the chords sometimes, but mostly just holding down chords in key.

It's a beautiful thing.

Ok, you take Hammond. You're obviously a pro. I'll maybe take the ukelele then (It is a multi-level garage?) and I can actually play that.

If CH wants drums too, then we can have two drum kits! I always loved double tracking drums when I was producing.

One of my grandfathers brothers looked so much like George Formby that he ended up having to sign his autographs when he was out.

Maybe we could get Crazy Horse to join the band? It might cheer him up a bit.

Gated no less.  Great quality apartments but a bit soulless.

Gated surprises me.  They were building some of these kinds of places in Nottingham while I was there.  Same basic idea: A handful on midrise buildings surrounding a common area/park.  Not gated, though.  Unless they installed the gates later.

We're in a gated one now, although I'm not entirely sure why it's gated.  Because of the road structure, it's a bit isolated, and there isn't really any crime nearby.  (Gates don't really prevent crime, anyway.)  Not optimal for making a getaway unless the thief wants to run a mile to the subway, which I suspect isn't easy when carrying a television or a computer.

Still, this worries me about, because I've always loved the little old terraced houses with the bay windows spreading out from the city centers.  Hopefully soulless apartment complexes don't become the norm over there.

Be nice to America. Or we'll bring democracy to your country.

Oh, they've been the around the UK for some time. I lived in one back in the 70s, gated and all, though crisscrossed with public bridle and foot paths. It was named RAF Chicksands and it was a very nice place to live. No aircraft noise.

My last journey in the old year might fit here...

The rebuilt Mária Valéria bridge (named for Archduchess Marie Valerie of Austria) between Esztergom/Hungary and Štúrovo/Slovakia over the Danube.

The old bridge was blown up by the retreating Wehrmacht on 26 December 1944. A reconstruction was always seem as a future symbol of friendship, alas, it took until 2001, following a long bilateral dispute (mainly about the bridge's height, in connection with a dam downriver that wasn't built).

The cloud cover was changing constantly that day. Like the weather through the past days -- around Christmas, we had 13°C, then cold winds, then warm rain, then sunshine, then fog... and it should snow again tomorrow.

Castle and Basilica of Esztergom from a nearby mountain. The background is Slovakia.

Here used to be the Roman border castrum Solva, flanked by a city. Hadrian and Marcus Aurelius have spent longer time here. Around 960, in the process of Europeanisation, the strongest Hungarian tribal chieftain built a castle on the ruins of the Roman castrum. As his son went on to subdue every other tribe and become Hungary's first Christian king, Esztergom became the capital. Later, the royals moved, but the prime archdiocese remained -- well, except for the Ottoman times. The castle saw lots of battles, so no wonder that the Basilica is failréy new: built 1822-69.

Further downriver, crossing the Danube by ferry at Visegrád (one of the royal seats following Esztergom; see in Sarkozy attacks Visegrád Group).

Let's close with some train blogging: a domestic Slovakian local train pulled by the aged but stylish ŽSSK 240 114 leaves Štúrovo station for Nové Zámky.

A couple of Christmas photos.

The 22 inch snow of December 09.

The National Christmas Tree. Every time I've been dragged out to see this ugly tree, the event has ended up being a disaster.  It's always bitterly cold, public parking is non-existent, there are no public toilets when you need them, the crowds are too large, etc, etc. This year was no different.
