Quite interesting to note that US unemployment DROPPED in 21 states in April.  Further 11 states had NO RISE in unemployment.  Do we have a peak forming?

a week for this one, about ten days for the spanish one later in the year.

not bad for someone who'll be 73 by the time of the second walk.

this year is the flat bit in the middle, the lat two years have been the 200 miles that go through the mountains, so its been 20 miles a day, plus a couple of thousand metres vertical.

I presented at a conference in Den Hague this week - so brought Lil along, checked out the MC Escher Museum there (very cool!) and then spent 2 days in Amsterdam wandering around. And we had beautiful weather..plus thursday was a national holiday, so we saw A'dam in its leisure - very fun!!

Sam Maloof dies at 93; designer and builder of simple, beautiful furniture

Maloof, whose career began six decades ago just as the American modernism movement was becoming popular, put usefulness before artistry and turned down multimillion-dollar offers to mass-produce his original designs. He worked out of his home workshop, shaping hardwood, one part at a time, into rocking chairs, cradles and hutches that were shorn of unnecessary adornments.

Obama, Grab Bag of Prisoner's Dilemmas | Bloomberg | 23 May 2009

When it comes to struggling states, Obama said a federal bailout of California and others won't be necessary. The administration is in talks with state treasurers nationwide to find "creative" ways they can deal with frozen credit markets. Many states will end up having to make some "very difficult choices" as demands on services rise while tax revenue falls, Obama said.

The biggest area in which states need help probably is in rolling over debt, according to the president. Obama said he's trying to find "creative ways that we can help them get through these difficult times."

"They are still being affected by some of the freezing in the credit markets," Obama said in the interview, according to a transcript released by the C-SPAN.

California is in deep shit...and if it stood alone, California would be something like the 6th or 7th largest economy in the world (or used to be anyway), so this is a big problem!!

Why should the Obama government bail out the Republican states?

They will simply start taking over state responsibilities.

In Shimla today, heading to Manali tomorrow, which is just south of Kashmir. I've run out of energy for the suffocating nature of Indian cities (even Rishikesh was nuts), Manali should tone it back a bit. I hope.
