Press Contact List: Your Help Needed

by afew
Tue Jul 21st, 2009 at 08:02:58 AM EST

In the relaunch of the Stop Blair! campaign, ThatBritGuy suggests putting out a press release.

We could do a press release in English, French, Spanish, German, Dutch, Hungarian, Swedish? Italian? Finnish? Danish? Portuguese? If you can and will translate into one of these languages or another European language, please mention it in comments. (The text of the press release itself will go up in another diary for collaborative editing).

And, even if you're not able to offer translation work, we need contact details (preferably online) for press and media in all countries we are likely to be able to cover in translation. This means checking out the Contact Us page (with reference to international affairs, European affairs, politics) on the sites of:

  • national and important regional dailies
  • politics and current affairs weeklies and monthlies
  • radio stations handling news and current affairs
  • TV channels likewise
  • news and current affairs web sites

We can then organize and update a list language by language (below the fold).

Bumped for more input: Germany? Italy? Portugal? Other?

How about sending the press release to the news agencies like AFP, Reuters, DPA, AP, etc.?

The most important way in is through personal contacts, which seem to be missing here.  I had a good network back in the US of Arsch, but even if those contacts were still live, wouldn't help here.

So who has direct contacts?

I don't know anyone who would be relevant to publicising this particular subject, but I will certainly email it to some influentials on my list. Most of them will not have even thought about Blair as EU President - it hasn't had much coverage in Finland. But it's well worth trying to make them aware of it. There are some Finnish politicians who might take Stop Blair on, because it is a simple subject that might resonate with their audience, and not have any real downside.

If the renewed UK push for Blair had happened before the EU elections, it would have had very wide resonance in Finland in that election context. Now it is a 'slow' subject, but, who knows, it might become 'hot' and we'll be ready.

Personal contacts would not be so much for a blanket press release, but they could be more important - so anyone who has personal contact(s) and is willing to use them, please say so (without needing to give contact details).

Contacts would be nice indeed... but I don't have any. But bad experiences with some local editors, that I have, from two occasions of attempting to contact the media: at the time students protested the introduction of tuition fees, and the time of the Iraq War.

Spreading the word a neighbourhood at a time: local papers like local people, and if they can connect to bigger events all the better.

If anyone here is ready to stand up and be counted, the Stop Blair press release can be made into a local story. "Local woman tries to stop proposed President" and so on. The release needs to be sent to the local paper with a very short personal note. An interview will follow. Maybe a picture.

For the interview, talking points are needed. If you've been reading at ET then you probably know a lot more about the EU than the local reporter. There won't be any difficult questions. All you have to do is convincingly present 3 or 4 'points' (Why Blair should not be EU President) and decide in advance how much about yourself is relevant and that your happy to divulge. Don't ask to check the article before it is printed - trust the reporter, even though they will get some of it wrong. If they feel they are doing something worthwhile, they will do their best. Don't mention ET unless asked about it. It is too hard to explain for a local audience.  Just talk about stopblair.eu. If asked about ET, give them the url and tell them to check it out.

This might not work so well in the UK, but in all the other 26 countries, the word Blair has little leverage one way or another - but the David and Goliath story is always a winner. There is always resentment if one of 'their' nationals is not up for a big job.

(While for Népszava and Magyar Nemzet, I found no general editors' address, so those are the foreign affairs editors only.)

I tried to check the papers of Hungarian-language dailies in neighbouring countries, but for some reason, none of them gave an editorial email. (They got too much hatemail?)

Urban and Metro have the widest circulation, but are not serious. Of the four serious papers, Information has the smallest circulation and the other three are about equally widely read. Information should not be discounted though. It is ideologically closest to the Stop Blair campaign, and it is quite good at stirring up a ruckus (besides, all you need to do is to have your story covered with some prominence in one of the serious papers - then the rest will plagiarise uncritically).
