Early Friday Photography Blog No.121

The heavy weather edition:

Photobucket

This week's blog will be "Weather" and "Photos As Usual".

As usual, "Ask the Expert" about anything you like, composition, technical things and so on.

Please try to keep to 600 pixels width and 100kb to 150kb max in file size and take a look at Wednesday Photography Blog No.2 for the technical bits on how to post.

Someone's new technology automatically limits width of photos shown to 600pixels. But it allows you to click and hold on the photos to see the larger version if the file is greater than 600 pixels in width.

Please do not click on post a comment but reply under one of the headers instead.

Have fun, and throw anything in, we want to see your photos!

Nice wintery effects with the ice, sun low on the horizon, long shadows, seemingly isolated locale, etc.

Cool! Expert question in the wrong folder: did you protect your camera's CCD somehow against direct Sunlight? (My own fresh experience: just the mirrored Sun at the edge of the lense was enough for the next picture to be noisy.)

The lens is coated with something that helps to reduce the glare but I also focused on a part of the scene where the sunlight wasn't too strong.  I've not noticed any effect like you describe to be honest.

Sadly I am without the Olympus 510 at the moment. It's closer to you than me, having been taken by my eldest to Aix. I'm thinking of acquiring a new digital SLR, so I'll probably have to reread the ET photonerd comments of the last years ;-)

Whatever it is, its performance with an outboard flash will be crucial. Though having played with DC LED lights, I am quite intrigued.

I'd been reading Equus, which has (among other things) "abstracts" of horses, disturbingly like the "abstracts" of women's bodies you see in posters aimed at the arty teenage market. I've never understood the "abstract" term. They look like details to me, close enough that you only see part of the subject. I presume this is due to my deficient artistic education.

Food photography is hard. The professionals use flat wide light, narrow depth of field, and they literally pay other professionals to come in and sculpt the food before they shoot it.

A magazine shot would probably have some bread or something else to add context. A tub of stuff on its own doesn't hold enough information to parse the contents without extra hints.

And it's easy to make food shots look disgusting without trying.

Recipe was from one of Nigella Lawson's books, but sort of played by ear - I had more cranberries and less apple than suggested so the sugar needed tweaking rather a lot. Cinnamon, ginger and clove spicing.
