don't you think that lately the world community rarely felt united busy pursuing their parochial interests? I remember after 9-11 it was Asian tsunami which deeply impacted the whole world. Then for Europeans and Americans it was the Russian-Georgian war (Indians or Chinese almost unnoticed it). There was mirage of unity in the run up to Copenhagen, the first serious attempt by humanity to change the course of history and it is shamefully disintegrated in national egotism, IPCC scandals and mutual recriminations.

although these moments where one might get a feel of a world-united are largely illusory.

The world united in sympathy for the US in the wake of 9-11, but found that sympathy abused by the Cheney administration.

My memory of the Russain-georgian "war" was of the lock-step dishonesty of the Western press as they peddled the neoliberal lie of poor little georgia being oppressed by the big bad russian bear. A view that was plainly contradicted by the stories on the ground.

One of the more interesting media stories of that time is how the BBC got it absolutely right for the first 48 hours or so and then, under pressure from a tidal wave of contradicting views elsewhere, changed their story to the pro-georgia one.

As for copenhagen. If there's anybody who's aware of how these things work and still thought something good would come of it, then I want some of what they're smoking. There may well be a groundswell of people who want changes in global energy policy as we face climate change, but there was never any chance that major industrial economies were going to permit their own policies to be inconvenienced.

So maybe for the tsunami, but otehrwise, not so much

A profile of economist Samuel Bowles discovers an interesting idea

"The founders of the discipline of economics, almost to a man - and they were only men - thought that the problem of distribution between classes - they used the word classes - was the key to understanding why nations grew or not," Bowles says. What Bowles sees as the essence of his profession [is] problems of wealth distribution...

Isn't inequality merely the price of America being No. 1?

"That's almost certainly false," Bowles tells SFR. "Prior to about 20 years ago, most economists thought that inequality just greased the wheels of progress. Overwhelmingly now, people who study it empirically think that it's sand in the wheels." ... Bowles offers a key reason why this is so. "Inequality breeds conflict, and conflict breeds wasted resources," he says.

In short, in a very unequal society, the people at the top have to spend a lot of time and energy keeping the lower classes obedient and productive.

Samuel Bowles is out of the mainstream on two counts: he takes into consideration history and economic history and he considers history of economic thought, as it used to be called. The mainstream will probably sniff and note that when one goes off into strange areas one is likely to come up with strange theories. Nothing to see here.

Avedon Carol wonder where we got the idea from that torture works

Back in the days when it was normal to see news shows or stories discussing the fact that torture doesn't work (and not giving any credence to the illusion that it does work), I didn't worry so much about the way torture seemed to work in dramatic fiction. Trouble is, everyone now talks like this fakery works in real life, and there's no good speech allowed to counteract the bad speech. This stuff was "just a movie" or "just a TV show" back when no one was trying to claim the effectiveness of torture as fact - but those days are gone.

Woman returns to work seven hours after giving birth - but is that a good example for us? « Jaynehowarth's Weblog

There have been innumerable studies over the past few years about women returning to work after having a baby.

Some focus on the guilt that many women with babies feel when they have to leave their precious bundle for the first time; others look at the support they receive in the workplace.

Then there are the surveys that examine the adequacy or otherwise of maternity/paternity leave; the issue of parental leave and parent-friendly hours when the babies start school.

So, how did it make you feel when you read that the headmistress of private school St Mary's Calne School, Wiltshire, returned to her desk just SEVEN hours after she had given birth to her third child?

Dr Helen Wright tells The Daily Mail (February 7, 2010) that she believed she was setting a good example by taking her hours-old daughter Jessica to the office with her.

"Most mothers want their daughters to have the exhilarating excitement of a career they love and the joy of a family," she tells the paper.

"I have that and I want to show the girls at St Mary's that that is not an impossible dream."

LA PAZ, Bolivia - After reinventing Bolivia's government to reflect the country's multi-ethnic, Indian majority, President Evo Morales is championing gender parity at the highest levels of government.
Women now account for half of Bolivia's Cabinet ministers -- 10 out of 20 -- as Morales embarks on his second term following his Jan. 22 swearing-in ceremony.

I'm hoping it'll be a good match, but it could be all over by half time.

Thankfully, no.  Actually we're pretty much back in business here.  One of our neighbors graciously lent us his shovel, so the wife and I took turns shoveling the truck out, and it only took us about an hour or so.  The road's melting back to normal nicely, too, now that the sun's out.

There's gotta be five feet of snow piled up in front of the truck, though.  Insane.

The storm last week left eight inches, which has mostly now melted, but on Sat. the city plowed our street and left ~two ft. high ridge in front of my mail and paper  boxes and across the entrance to my drive.  I got out that day and cleared a path to the mail and paper boxes and started clearing the ridge in front of my drive. That night city trucks came back and cleared the entrance to the drive.

Sounds like you will be able to make it to work tomorrow. Glad to hear it is melting. Ours melted just in time for more tomorrow.  Got to get in more wood now.

Explosion At Middletown Power Plant - Courant.com
MIDDLETOWN - Witnesses and emergency response authorities said as many as 100 people were injured and an undetermined number may have died when a massive explosion, which homeowners felt more than 10 miles away and mistook for an earth quake, blew up a power plant being built on the Connecticut River in the southern section of Middletown at about 11 a.m. Sunday.

Medical rescue personnel said at least 100 were injured, four critically, and two were dead. "There are bodies everywhere," a witness said. Another witness said many victims may be buried in rubble

An hour after the explosion and what is believed to be the Kleen Energy Systems plant on River Road, emergency rescue personnel were continuing to arrive by vehicle and helicopter. Helicopters were airlifting victims to area hospitals.

There were as many as 20 ambulances at the plant.

Neighbors of the plant said as many as 100 employees may have been working there when the explosion took place. Confirmed information about damage and injuries from authorities was difficult to obtain.

Explosion At Middletown Power Plant

Gerald E. Daley, a member of the Middletown Common Council, said the gas-fired plant was under construction and that today was the first day that its power-generating systems were being tested. Workers were on scene when the blast occurred, he said.

Anytime that construction companies get the bright idea of trying to cut costs by hiring contract labor instead of skilled labor with the training to know how to avoid these things should be shown a picture of this.

Back at the turn of the last decade, there were a huge number of natural gas fired peaking plants built in Indiana.  They shipped the power out of state, but these things tended to create environmental messes which pissed off the locals.  So they fought for a state law that would force the electric companies to get a permit from the state through a regulatory process that required the use of trained personnel only on the construction of the plants.  The electric and construction companies fought it tooth and nail, and said that it there was no danger of there being an explosion if there was a problem with the construction.  They said that painting pictures of these gas peaking plants blowing up was a scare tactic by organized labor to get their members work........

Good memory.

I took my blog name from the series of sociological studies in my home town.

The Middletown studies are a classic sociological case study of a city, Muncie, in Indiana, as contained in two books by Robert Staughton Lynd and Helen Merrell Lynd:

    * Middletown: A Study in Modern American Culture, published in 1929.
    * Middletown in Transition : A Study in Cultural Conflicts, published in 1937.

They wrote this about the first book:

"The city will be called Middletown. A community as small as thirty-odd thousand...[in which] the field staff was enabled to concentrate on cultural change...the interplay of a relatively constant...American stock and its changing environment" (1929: p. 8).

In these studies, the Lynds and a group of researchers conduct an in-depth field study of a small American urban center in order to discover key cultural norms and better understand social change. The first study was conducted during the 1920s, beginning in January, 1924, while the second was written during the Great Depression.

47 is a pretty long kick, but, yeah, I was a little disappointed with how that drive ended.  Started out great.

Gonna have to just let Breesus throw it and hope he can outgun Manning tonight.

If they keep making him take 40+ kicks, he's gonna miss sooner or later.

They need to get a smarter play calling to get first downs (ha sounds easy when I write it)

Yeah, play-calling sucks.  Gotta let Brees go out with four or five wide and try to open the field up.

Great defensive plays. I think Manning's on field calls are a sign he's getting rattled.

And they missed the kick, tho' it was a long one

Manning seems to be losing his rhythm a bit.  But, as MillMan said above, that 4th Down conversion to Reggie Wayne looked way too easy.

But they only needed a couple of yards. And it was a smart play, very quick release

Had to go for two to make it a touchdown game.

Think the refs got it right overturning the incomplete call.

So, Aints by 7.  See if Pey-Pey can answer.
