My employer? Damn, that's me now. The terms and conditions I've given myself are terrible.  I need to unionise.

What is the actual complaint? You don't have the typical asshole boss, you work the hours that YOU specify, you charge what YOU specify.  The reason I say this is because your situation is similar to my Chem tutoring business which cranks up this coming week.  Best job, best employment situation I've ever had. Retirement ... BAH!  I'll do this till my brain gives out. Retirement is for people who hate the work they do, sorry bastards. Or if your body gives out.

Just got back from a street fair around the corner and a local hand-rolled cigar factory that I didn't even know existed was showcasing their skillls:

How dissillusioning !  I had always believed that the true character, aroma and flavor of a Cuban Cigar came from its having been rolled on the smooth surface of the inside of the thigh of a beautiful Latina...

Admittedly, my cigarology comes from close attention to performances of Carmen, but still...

NYT: Blackwater Won Contracts Through a Web of Companies

Blackwater Worldwide created a web of more than 30 shell companies or subsidiaries in part to obtain millions of dollars in American government contracts after the security company came under intense criticism for reckless conduct in Iraq, according to Congressional investigators and former Blackwater officials...

The Senate Armed Services Committee this week released a chart that identified 31 affiliates of Blackwater, now known as Xe Services...

The network of companies -- which includes several businesses located in offshore tax havens -- allowed Blackwater to obscure its involvement in government work from contracting officials or the public, and to assure a low profile for any of its classified activities, said former Blackwater officials, who, like the government officials, spoke only on condition of anonymity.

Senator Carl Levin, the Michigan Democrat who is chairman of the Armed Services Committee, said in a statement that it was worth "looking into why Blackwater would need to create the dozens of other names" and said he had requested that the Justice Department investigate whether Blackwater officers misled the government when using subsidiaries to solicit contracts.

Of course, the real scandal is not the continued involvement of one specific company with a known bad record, Blackwater, but the continuation of the privatisation of war.

The real scandal is that we call ourselves civilized but we still conduct war against our own species in any fashion, but that's old Fuddy-Duddy me.

Just back from the demonstration against institutional xenophobia in Lyon. I estimate we were between 4000 and 5000 persons at least (the organisers claim 7000/8000). It is a very good achievement for a demonstration that was solely on values and on the first days of September. It was heartwarming

Mass demonstrations across France against Roma expulsions | RFI
Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets across France Saturday to protest the French government's security policy and recent expulsions of Roma gypsies. A collective of political parties and trade unions urged the public to stand up against "xenophobia" and "the politics of pillory".

Demonstrations took place in 140 French cities and towns, with left-wing politicians, union representatives and celebrities participating in 130 events.

What I don't get about all this is that within the EU there is supposed to be free movement of labor. How is that possible under rules that force people to move from place to place?

I know the EU is not supposed to be the United State of Europe, but isn't this sort of like saying that people from, say, Missouri, can't move freely to, say, Illinois?

There is Schengen, the agreement about open borders; and there was an agreement regarding temporary labour market limitations, lasting a maximum of seven years from accession. Bulgaria and Romania joined the EU on 1 January 2007, and they are set to join the Schengen zone only next March.

This also means that Sarko's deportations are a bizarre show: all the deported will be able to re-enter legally and without any controls in half a year's time at the latest.

C'est magnifique.

After nine years of work, $330 Billion in treasure, and nearly 1,300 American fatalities, bankers might ultimately do to Afghanistan what the Taliban could never accomplish......

Something in the neighborhood of $200 to $300 million in deposits have been withdrawn in just a couple days, about half of all the bank's assets. If the stampede continues for just a few more days the bank will fail.

So why is this important? Because the Kabul Bank is what the government uses to pay its teachers, police, and soldiers.

Please go recommend this at Big Orange.  It's an important story, and it's slipping down the recent diaries column.

One thing I find disturbing is the timing. This comes at the time Karzai's attempts to gain credibility at home by speaking out about collateral damage in the actions of his sponsors became too much for Robert Gates et al, and they are hitting back at their past-the-due-date puppet by blasting him for corruption.

Thinking about that, I'm not sure which is more disturbing.

That Karzai and gang are really deeply corrupt, and have managed to plunge their own country into crisis.

Or, the DoD was aware of this, has been facilitating it, and has now decided to use it because Karzai went off the reservation.

There are no heroes here.

Well, Karzai being the puppet, I wouldn't characterise anything his group did as plunge their own country into crisis. Their country was in deep crisis before them, and other, more powerful actors did everything to keep it in crisis while Karzau & co were on the table; crashing a bank, even if it breaks their skeleton of a state apparatus, pales in comparison.

But there are no heroes here indeed.

Once you rip to files though it's easy. Most heavy Finnish DJs seem to mix from files rather then CDs, so its easy to synch up two beats and pitch shift to either keep both tracks at their original pitch or even match pitches.

Ha, I'm afraid I have no idea what modern DJ-ing entails. I was at an event a few years back and the DJ kept up the same relentless beat for about 2 hours.

It was fine for about 15 minutes, then it got boring. I was light and shade, difference is good. Even zar trance has a variety of rhythms

As a prelude to next week-end's meet-up, we had lunch today in a Turkish restaurant in Paris, with LEP, Mig, Redstar and family. Followed by a stroll uphill to Montmartre to check out the view from the steps of the Sacre Coeur.

(note to Redstar: the building with the green roof and the two square spires is the Church of Saint-Vincent-de-Paul
