Tonight England are playing, so it is important that I be in a recpetive frame of mind to enjoy the full effect. Consequently I had my first alcoholic beverage at 3:00.

Actually I thought a local pub was holding a beer festival, but it was only cider, which I don't drink. So I had a couple of pints to reward my effort and came home. But have no fear, further drink will be taken.

But then again, "rain stops play" is something the verage Brit associates with cricket rather than footie, but there's quite a mean storm over donetsk at the moment and the ref has taken the players off

the game was delayed for 55 minutes, but once France took a 2-0 lead the result was never in doubt and the game more or less died as a spectacle as Ukraine were going nowhere and France had no real desire to do anythng more.

Now for the main event....

in the second half, where it went crazy, it was fun to watch.

But once you'd scored, the result was never seriously in doubt. France had just a bit more of everything everywhere

Damn. I was on a conference call with a Japanese lender in NYC, and missed the whole second half. (After I'd planned the call for right after the end of the match, but you know those weather gods.)

And two beautiful goals between defender legs, but the match was still awful to watch. What was really bad in the first half and towards the end was the Ukrainian fans in Donetsk. So different from those in Kiev four days earlier. They started after the rain break by booing/whistling the French team already when they entered the arena, and then went on to do that every time France had the ball, until after the goal. Then towards the end, they were whistling the own team, and half of them left the stadium before it was over.

Speaking of whistling the opponent just to disturb their game, although the Donetsk crowd was the extreme example, I noticed that this is now quite widespread. Ireland fans were "great" in it, too, though they at least showed how to lose with heads upright (singning a sad song I sadly don't know full-throttle for long minutes).

oh god, england kill you every time. I cannot count the ways they annoy you, make you hope, let you down, tease and torture you.

the only way I can bear it is with strong beer in hand and a sufficently anaesthetised consciousness so that I can watch the whole grim marathon without screaming out loud in anguish and despair more than 5 times a minute

As a neutral observer, I saw the most exciting and entertaining match of the tournament, topped up with a crazy heel goal from Welbeck.

I'm sure it was, but I think I will recover just in time for the nerve shredding to come on Tuesday when we need a draw with the Ukraine.

Unfortunately this video is not available in Germany because it may contain material which goes against the Constitution, the Bundesbank, and the Might of the World Octopus.

Buzzcocks, indeed. (Did i see them once with Penelope Houston and the Avengers?)
