I'm trading in my car on Friday but had half a tank of petrol, so rather than just give it away to the garage I went for a drive up to a chilli farm about 60 miles away and bought loads of overpriced stuff I don't need, but want, like chipotle barbecue sauce

What was interesting was how the traffic changed in character. I didn't have quie enough petrol to cruise up so I went at a slow fuel conserving 50 mph and let everything pass me.

Up in suffolk everyone was relaxed and let me get on with it, they passed me when were ready. But in N Essex as the roads got busier they were all passing me at speed, once in s Essex I was really in everyone's way. Chill guys.

I always like seeing how much dealers try to get away with charging new buyers when I trade my car in.

My old Jeep I traded in a couple months back somehow made it from the Fiat dealer in Orlando to some backwoods hick dealer in Alabama.  They're asking $4k more than I paid for it.

Probably an even higher markup on the Civic, depending on how old it is.  They ask two or three times the trade-in value for Civics here.

Sounds like my old Land Rover. Bought it from a guy for £6500, drove it all over europe, sold it back to him for £2500.

He put it on sale for £5,500

Sounds about right.  I'd guess it ultimately went for £3,500-4,000, but I don't know what haggling culture is like over there.

We've been fairly lucky.  We dumped our Civic just as the world was coming to an end in 2008, so they gave us top dollar on it and a stupid-low price on the Toyota we bought.  We wound up trading the Toyo in here for more than we paid for it, which allowed us to turn it into two cars.

Which was about a month before gas prices spiked in 2011.  Dealer did not look happy when we saw each other while I was getting an oil change. :)

...adding: The idea of paying even £5,500 for a Landy is strange to me.  Ten-year-old Discos fetch about twice that here.  Defenders -- keeping in mind they haven't sold them here in 15 years -- go for at least $30k, and that's if they need serious TLC.

A guy I know recently imported an old LR 110 to the U.S. Not sure how much he paid but I think it was around $20,000. It's more than 25 years old so the import regulations make it practical--you can't really get new cars in without paying huge amounts for conversion work.

Yes, but keep in mind that $30k here is going to get you one with either a Chevy 350 or a Ford 302, as well as a mated t-case and tranny.  You could easily spend $10k on that.

Probably don't want to rely on being able to get parts for a 25-year-old 110.

Nah, he already has a fleet of old LRs and all sorts of parts supple channels. It's pretty easy to get them IF you aren't in a rush.

Actually that applies to pretty much all cars--you can build them up from individual pieces if you're so inclined and have enough patience.

Tonight is England vs Ukraine. It seems that a draw against mis-firing France and a victory over the football colossus that is Sweden coupled with the return of Rooney has fanned the flame of hopeful expectation in english hearts that this time will be our time.

So, the media have been absolutely full of it today. Can we beat Ukraine blah blah blah ? Can we win the Championship ?

Of course, whatever the result there's the little matter of Spain or Italy to overcome in the next round. So, a little proportion would be appreciated.

This is a completely different Ukraine facing the 2.7 Lions tonite. No Schevchenko, No Woronin, no Nazarenko. Schevchenko has Ukraine's only 2 goals.

They will be fighting to stay, but the trainer says, "Some of my players have noticed this is different to the Ukrainian league."

Methinks the only sure bet is that Rooney will be provoked ohne ende.

That, and nobody knows nothing.

Quite a turn up for the books realy.

Not England winning, just, against Ukraine, but Sweden beating France. I didn't see that coming at all.

And don't give me any rubbish about Ukraine's goal that never was; we've been there and we were owed one. Plus, the Ukranian who supplied the pass was offside anyway

Well, this time the goal was disallowed with a special referee standing on the goal line the whole match just for this one situation. That is amazing! Possibly, other decision would had been made without that referee.

As for the offside - formally it was there indeed, exactly for the long pass moment. But >90% of line referees wouldn't have registered it, because of:

  • physical difficulty of keeping eyes and attention on two field spots >50 meters apart at the same moment;
  • the game situation did not look like offside, as no player was aware of it, and it happen just a couple of meters into the English field-half.

Did you really notice the offside live? The goal was more obvious, not of that spinning-of-the-crossbar-and-ground type.

but Sweden beating France. I didn't see that coming at all.

From the 5th minute, France played without an intent to win, apparently certain that England will secure a place in the quarterfinals for them, too. Sweden on the other hand had something to prove. Beautiful goal from Ibrahimović.

Amassed journalists trying to bait the Greek players into talking about the coming match against the Steel Helmets in terms of the "Euro Crisis," unsuccessful.

With strong stares here's the Greeks (in paraphrase): This is a football match, it's a game we've played since we were kids. We love to play, and we love to play against anyone.

Then Jogi Löw: Merkel doesn't tell us who to play, or how to set tactics. We don't tell her politics.

Still, i can't get it out of my mind, 'Schland-Griechenland. Because i'll bet that no one can keep the politics out of the match.

Though ultimately, it will be about football.

Came across an important reference for my research (probably the most important one yet!).  Facebook IS good for something, after all!

THIS World Bank study addresses precisely my hypothesis:

Many expected that the shifts in apparel production across countries after the MFA would be mainly driven by wage differences because apparel is labor intensive. Wage differences, however, only explain 30 percent of the variation in the change in exports across countries.
Time to reformulate my hypothesis!

The MSM used to ask people which candidate they would prefer to have a beer with. With Romney, the answer is all too obvious. Coffee is presumably out too. So here's what they came up with:
Beyond Romney's low favorability ratings, the poll reflects perceived weaknesses for the Republican challenger both in style and substance. Only 31 percent of likely voters say they'd want to sit next to Romney on a long airplane flight, compared with 57 percent who prefer Obama as a seat mate.
by gk (g k quattro due due sette "at" gmail.com) on Wed Jun 20th, 2012 at 07:42:15 AM EST
Um, if you were sitting next to Romney, you would be a private Lear Jet. If you were sitting next to Obama, you would be in Air Force One. I would choose the Lear Jet in a minute, and then have enough beers so it doesn't matter who's in the next seat.
