Game time's coming up. Who's bringing the beer?

Display:
to enjoy a weekend.  I am currently in the nerve-wracking process of doing voice-overs to PowerPoint lectures for the online course I must give in September.  The one I did last week came out excellent and picture perfect(!) except for one tiny yet glaring mistake.  Arrggh!!! (Can you find it?) I hope we can edit it out instead of doing the whole bloody thing over again!

talking of beer, I vsited Drew's old stamping ground in nottingham.

An LGBT (although G.&T really) group of us went up there for a pub crawl. As is the way of things, the first pub, the VAT & Fiddle, was the best pub, where we had the three standout beers of the day, all by Castle Rock brewery;-

Black gold Mild. Nicely more-ish with a faint hint of floral hop.
Preservation. A good solid fruity malt bitter
Chimney Sweeper : A dark wheat beer, equivalent to a dunkel weisse.

We went to a BrewDog pub (trendy brewery, high prices) where a friend ordered a bottled beer and was startled to be charged £9. That'll teach him not to check first.

I was disappointed at the 6th pub to be confronted with 7 handpumps, 6 of which had bland gold ales and the 7th had a super strong stout which wasn't really what I wanted.

Not helped by having to listen to a couple of people who don't know my history aying rather waspish and hurtful things about trans people. Rather than embarrass someone and have to say something when I was already just a bit too tipsy to be in control, I stepped out

The guy I most relate to is actually a dyed in the wool 1% tory boy, private school - Oxford - City accountancy. Bought a nice flat in a posh part of London, he now studies Latin in academia and, isolated by but unaware of his privilege, he now pontificates on the world.

Strangely, we get on well cos we both like beer.

However, we were discussing the fact that the official beer of the London Olympics, ie the only one you will be ble to buy at any Olympics venue, will be that premier British brand, Heineken. However, I speculated that, conversely, the range of wines available will be carefully selected by IOC sommeliers as being the best in the world, no expense spared.

When I suggested that this was because of snobbbery on the part of Lord coe and the other beer indifferent members of the IOC, my friend declared that this was the product of working class prejudice and I was the worst sort of throwback 1980s socialist. He seemed surprised when I laughed at him.

But he is a window on another worldview otherwise closed to me.

I'm currently copying a load of CDs for my car, but one refuses to play ball. It works perfectly well in a normal audio CD player, but it just errors when in a computer.

It looks like it has a slight scratch in the run on in the middle. Anyone know if there's a way around it without buying a new CD ?

Does it perhaps have a "Will not play on PC/MAC" marking somewhere? If so, there are ways around that, but I doubt it will be worth the time.

CD players are all different. Try a different computer - or four.

If it fails in all of them it's probably copy protection. If it plays in one, your computer's drive is marginal.

I'm kinda reluctant to do that cos it still plays on an audio player, but there's quite a lot on how to do it, so I'll research.

Italy just had 3 or 4 corner kicks in a row.

There was a comment that Spain was playing against Italy as Italy and Portugal had played against Spain previously: defending high up. The idea must be to hinder Italy's playmaking.

I thought it would be a much tighter game. Spain is showing its artistry in its passing...and is playing a much more wide open game than I thought they would. Does Italy have any chance at this point...

Only one goal conceded altogether in this Euro2012, to Italy in the first round 1-1 game.

So, Spain ends 12 goals for, 1 against, in this tournament. But Portugal could have sent them home in the penalty shootout...

With the first goals, Italy got a taste of what it did to Germany - a sudden header, then a break of offside trap (and then another one). They had to admire that.

The best thing about Spain is their patience with the ball. When their plan A doesn't work they don't kick the ball away but hold it until a plan B materializes.

In the fourth goal, Torres was facing Buffon and kicked the ball back without looking and Mata happened to be well placed, running forward, to kick the ball into the net. Similarly for the first goal, Silva happened to be well placed for a header when Cesc kicket it back from the end line.

One of the skills of this team is that they "happen" to be in the right place at the right time, not out of luck but skill.

Actually, if you notice, youll see that Torres was pretty uch aware that Mata was on that run cos he overtook him as he ran for the through ball. Presuming Mata kept on the same run, torres would have known to within a metre where he was when he passed.

that's not to take away the awareness and sheer cleverness of the flick which totally committed buffon. If you watch the replay from behind the goal you'll see that Torres used his eyes to fool Buffon into thinking he was going left towards the goal line. He never for a moment looked to his right, where he actually passed the ball.

it killed the game at a moment when it was still really open. Italy was dangerous enough to still have a chance, but that injury hit them psychologically more than anything else - they stopped playing.

But of course that doesn't mean that Spain's victory isn't fully deserved - it is.

Liechtenstein votes to keep prince's veto | Reuters

(Reuters) - Voters in Liechtenstein rejected a proposal to abolish the ruling prince's right to veto the results of popular referendums on Sunday, underscoring how citizens see the ruling family as integral to the principality's wealth and stability.

The referendum was proposed by pro-democracy campaigners after Crown Prince Alois von und zu Liechtenstein said last year he would block the legalization of abortion if citizens approved it in a referendum. In the end, citizens rejected it anyway.

Official figures showed 76.1 percent of voters rejected the proposal on Sunday.
