I feel privileged to have visited, in the olden days, the Mecca of Fish and Chips: Harry Ramsden's on the outskirts of Leeds.

A vast refined atmosphere of gentle quiet and chandeliers, with waiting staff in formal black and white. And white tablecloths. And pease pudding. And large succulent pickled onions. Absolutely superb.

They got through some ridiculous annual amount of potatoes - like 600 tonnes (citation needed).

There was a Harry Ramsden's next to our hotel in Nottingham when we were apartment hunting.  First place we ever ate in Britain.  Had fish n' chips and a bitter.

It was so bad we went to Pizza Hut to get rid of the taste (thinking it would at least be predictable).  At which point we discovered that the English idea of Pizza Hut is kind of like the American idea of Pizza Hut -- but without any cheese or sauce, and cooked half an hour too long.

Yep, I'll avoid Harry Ramsdens as far as possible.  Whatever it built it's reputation on, it isn't a good place to get food anymore. Pizza Hut is terrible too, I've seen their ingredients list.  Never eating there again.

Pizza Hut is indeed terrible, but there are degrees of terrible.  American Pizza Hut is greasy, salty and makes us hate ourselves for several hours.  English Pizza Hut was like ebola in food form.

The best food there was at the little pubs.

Actually, I love your pics. I grew up in New England and have wonderful memories of summering in Maine, buying lobsters right off the boats and swimming in frigid water.  I just wish that crab cakes on the local 'green and red' menu meant something other than canned crab with chilies....

Russia's Aeroflot entices visitors with Moscow's cathedrals and nuclear missiles
Posters advertising Aeroflot's twice-a-day flights from Brussels to Moscow have appeared under the heading "Discover Russia" on the walls of the Belgian capital's Metro underground service.
Here is the poster:

The Telegraph claims that the missiles going down the street are nuclear ones, but what do you expect from them? Jeffrey Lewis following a careful analysis of the picture, taking into account a building under rennovation and the weather, concludes that it probably comes from the end of the Victory Day parade on 9 May 2012, and that, had the picture been taken a few minutes later, they would have captured some  SS-27s. But it wasn't, so all you see are short-range ballistic missiles, not nuclear-capable ICBMs.

Talking about pizza , the best pizza I eat was in Stockholm but some 40 years ago...made by Italians of course. Nowadays it is pretty hard to find really good pizza...especially not here in Australia. I had one pretty good few years ago in Melbourne again made by real Italian that did not even speak English (he came fresh from Italy). I simply hate Pizza Hut and similar.
As for Fish and cheeps they used to have good and cheap one in NZ but here I only really like it at one single take away on Gold Coast...
by vbo on Thu Aug 30th, 2012 at 01:35:27 PM EST
Nowadays it is mostly Kurds making pizzas in Sweden. The Italian immigrants have moved on I guess.

Ha'aretz has a PR piece for Scientology, claiming to be journalism.
The Jaffa neighbors of the legendary Alhambra Cinema rubbed their eyes in amazement last week at the sight of the gleaming white building in the heart of the sooty boulevard. The elegant theater, decorated with flags and blue ribbons, has now been opened to the general public after two years of renovation. In honor of the opening a crowd of about 2,000 Scientologists from 27 countries, including government officials and religious leaders, gathered there. At nightfall the name "Alhambra" was illuminated once again in the skies of the port city.
Last year, their coverage was more interesting.
Attorney Gur Finkelstein, who represents the Scientology Center in Israel, was detained several weeks ago for allegedly hiring this gang to supply him with weapons and  assist him in his own endeavors.

[...]

A string of high-profile crimes have been attributed to Finkelstein, include attempts  to burn down the Scientology Center, and also the assault and plot to assassinate the director of Tel Aviv's planning and construction department, Shoteh Hovel.

I remember one of the founding members (unfortunately, I don't remember his name) of Scientology from a course I took in the army. This guy was excited that I'd actually heard of his cult, so he told me lots about it (I didn't let on that I knew about it from Martin Gardiner....). He carried around with him a heavy book which he claimed was top secret, and kept repearing the Scientology axioms. My favorite: "The highest purpose in thls universe is the creation of an effect."

Can someone suggest a Youtube video of a windmill that emphasizes the tremendous power involved? I'm thinking of something that has a loud "whoosh...whoosh...whoosh" as the blades go by, maybe with lots of subsonics that will rattle your false teeth.

The purpose is to support a "power and energy" section in an 8th grade class with the video, connecting the computer up to a suitably powerful amp/speaker combination and blowing the kids out of their seats, so to speak...

Well, it appears that soon to be Tropical Depression Isaac will move directly over Mountain Home, AR, dropping around 4" (~10cm) of rain and bringing winds of 20 to 30 mph, with gusts possible, but not likely, to 60 mph. I spent the afternoon battening down and bringing in. But I don't have any reason not to sleep in tomorrow, unless Isaac brings me a reason. From here it goes up into Missouri, exiting over St. Louis.

Blessed rain. It is a problem for those not yet done with the harvest but will provide a good soaking for fall grazing and will raise the level of the lakes.

And I wrote that before Clint Eastwood walked out on stage and had an extended "Senior Moment" Rant to an empty chair.

Obama's camp response when asked about Eastwood's speech:

Obama campaign press secretary Ben LaBolt wouldn't get into the nuances of Clint Eastwood's Republican National Convention speech, but he did have a quick retort Thursday night.

"Referring all questions on this to Salvador Dali," LaBolt told Politico via email.

I am agog.  Agog I is.

Brand new Twitter username @InvisibleObama went from zero to over 20,000 followers in about an hour last night. At age 82, good old Clint managed to swamp the latest social media technology.
