Sheffield man left with nothing after falling victim to Westminster conmen « Pride's Purge

A gang of smooth talking conmen has left a Sheffield man with next to nothing after conning him out of everything he had.

The 44-year old victim, Mr Nicholas Clegg from the Hallam area of Sheffield, only discovered he had been completely stripped of all his dignity after he was tricked into handing over everything he had to the smooth talking conmen - who gave an address in Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire

Arf.

Astonishing article in the guardian today suggesting the LibDems still have a purpose in life affecting the economy. I would link but I've enjoyed the beer a bit too much and it's too stupid an article

BBC - Adam Curtis Blog: MENTAL CHANNEL NUMBER ONE - THE MAN FROM MARS

To celebrate today's successful landing on Mars I thought I would show a film of a man who claimed to have got to Mars a long time ago. He did this back in the late 1950s by communicating telepathically with the beings who inhabited the Red Planet. He also claimed that his mother went there on a UFO. And what's more the BBC took him very seriously.

He was called George King. He was a London taxi driver who back in 1956 had a strange experience. He was washing the dishes when he heard a voice which said

A better day in Cologne beer-wise. Didn't start well by moving a long way south to discover the pub had been demolished, but after that I had some nice beers.

I also used a lot of public transport cos I'm still aching from yesterday's heroics in Koln cathedral

Booming Economy in Northern Italy Could Be a Model for the Country - SPIEGEL ONLINE
The Italian economy is mired in stagnation and many fear Rome may ultimately require an EU bailout. But the region around Venice continues to do surprisingly well, thanks in large part to several family-owned yet globally active companies. Could the model work for the rest of the country?

The grinder grates, the pump hums and then out comes the espresso -- and Fabio De'Longhi begins explaining the most important elements in making a decent cup of coffee: the beans, the amount, the water, the temperature and, naturally, the machine. He reaches for a plastic cup. A plastic cup? "It keeps it hot longer," he says apologetically.

OAS_RICH('Middle2'); De'Longhi, CEO of the eponymous espresso machine manufacturer, is standing in the waiting room outside his office, operating his best machine: a fully automated espresso maker with a color display and adjustable milk froth consistency, from liquid to creamy. The "Prima Donna Exclusive" retails for €1,999 ($2,478). The man from Treviso is Italy's model businessman, 43 years old, handsome, and the kind of man who likes to take off his jacket and roll up the sleeves of his custom-tailored shirt. He has headed the company since 2001.

the neo-lib model remains alive in Der Spiegel. Clear, we need more family owned global companies

I think the most depressing aspect for me is that there's some odd notion that family owned global companies can be constructed in a couple of years to solve the economic problems of the south.

Strangely, most of the existing companies have 50-100 years of history (over a 100 in the case of DeLonghi)...
