Banking union battle lines drawn | EurActiv

Negotiating stances on the EU's proposed banking union were nailed into the ground on the fringes of an informal European finance ministers meeting in Nicosia today (14 September), following a Eurogroup meeting which left hanging the issue of an aid package for Spain.

Banking union proposals tabled by the Commission on Wednesday (12 September) are top of the agenda at the informal meeting in the Cypriot capital, as countries adopt preliminary stances on the controversial paper.

The Commission wants the European Central Bank (ECB) installed as a new super-regulator by January next year.

But the European Council must agree unanimously on the proposal, and a regulation transferring powers from the European Banking Authority (EBA) must also be agreed with the European Parliament.

EUobserver.com / Economic Affairs / More pressure on Greece as EU finance ministers meet

BRUSSELS - Finance ministers are meeting in Cyprus to put more pressure on Greece to implement promised budget cuts, so that bailout payments can resume in November.

The informal meeting of finance ministers taking place Friday and Saturday (14-15 September) in Nicosia was originally expected to be a "huge event", with Greece's troika report and a possible Spanish request for more financial assistance to be dealt with.

None of that is now expected to happen. The troika of international lenders (European Commission, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund) has just started its mission in Athens, where there is still no final agreement on the €11.5bn worth of spending cuts that had to be implemented by end of June.

Spain should avoid a further bailout at all costs | Michael Burke | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk

...It seems inevitable that more "austerity" is on the way both in the euro area and in Britain despite the fact that it is clearly failing either to revive the economy or in its stated objective of reducing deficits and debt. The actual purpose of austerity is the transfer of incomes from labour and the poor to capital and the rich.

The arguments between the Madrid government and the troika amount to who gets to decide the burdens to be imposed and which group of capitalists will be the main beneficiaries. Profits are already rising because of austerity, even in the midst of the slump. As a result, there are more than sufficient funds in Spain to cover the deficit and to finance recovery. There is no need for a bailout and the ECB has made it harder to force a bailout. It would be a national betrayal if the Rajoy government in Spain now asked for one.

Czech President rejects Barroso's EU 'federation' plan | EurActiv

Eurosceptic Czech President Vaclav Klaus has flatly rejected a proposal by EU Commission President José Manuel Barroso for a major transformation of the European Union into a "federation of nation states", according to Czech press reports.

It is the first time that the leader of an EU country has publicly opposed Barroso's suggestion, made in a State of the Union address to the European Parliament Wednesday (12 September).

Klaus was invited by the website Novinky to comment on Barroso's speech in Strasbourg. He said: "I firmly reject the idea presented by José Barroso," adding: "The only thing I appreciate in his proposal is that the current advocates of deeper European integration have for the first time openly admitted their real goals".

Former ally criticises Putin's repressive path - Europe - World - The Independent
One of Vladimir Putin's former political allies says that Russia has embarked on the "worst-case scenario" since Mr Putin returned to the presidency in May.

Alexei Kudrin, who until late last year was Russia's finance minister, said that the government appeared determined to crack down on opposition leaders and "keep them inside strict boundaries".

The remarks come ahead of a major street protest planned against Mr Putin's rule, and on the day that the Russian parliament expelled Gennady Gudkov, an MP who has become a vocal critic of Mr Putin.

Mr Kudrin, who spent 11 years as finance minister and was widely respected in Russia and internationally, was regarded as one of the few people in the Russian elite who spoke to Mr Putin as an equal, but left the government late last year after an argument with Dmitry Medvedev, then the President and now Prime Minister.

Ekathimerini: Jobless figures continue to rise at an alarming rate
Unemployment in Greece is going from bad to worse, as official figures released by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) on Thursday showed a 44 percent increase in the number of jobless in this year's second quarter compared to the same period in 2011.

The April-June rate stood at 23.6 percent, against 22.6 percent in the year's first quarter and 16.3 percent in the second quarter of 2011.

What is even more worrying is the increase in the rate of the long-term unemployed (those who have been out of work for over a year) among the total jobless, which has jumped to 59 percent.

All nominally neutral MSM articles on anti-austerity protests do a false he-said-she-said: first they let it be heard that the measures disproportionally hit the poor and spare the rich, but then let the government tell that it's painful but necessary. There is no second reply from the protester side that far from correcting the "difficult economic climate", the measures only make them worse.

Brussels drops plans for EU law limiting right to strike | EurActiv

The European Commission has withdrawn proposed legislation limiting workers' right to strike, amid a furore from trade unions and EU lawmakers in Parliament who waived a "yellow card" to Brussels for stepping over national sovereignty.

László Andor, EU Employment Commissioner, announced the decision to abandon the proposal to the members of the European Parliament's Employment Committee on Wednesday (12 September).

Critics had condemned the so-called Monti II regulation over its implications for European social rights and for interfering with national sovereignty.

The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) rejected the proposal as it "restricts the right to take collective action."

US central bank stimulus lifts world stock markets | Business News | DW.DE | 14.09.2012
Euphoria about the US Federal Reserve Bank's new stimulus plan has prompted a global equities rally, sending gold and commodities prices to new highs. The euro also surged, as the US dollar slumped.

... The move added to positive market sentiment prompted by the European Central Bank, which announced last week it would buy the bonds of struggling eurozone members in efforts to bring down their borrowing costs.

... Neal Gilbert, currency strategist at GFT Forex, told the news agency Reuters that decisions made in Europe and the US - coupled with an expected stimulus package in China - could be creating "a bull market for at least the near term."

Meet The Blogger Who May Have Just Saved The American Economy | Business Insider
The Fed's announcement of QE Unlimited was a clear departure from past strategy: Rather than seeing asset purchases as an amount of money injected into the financial system, the Fed is now aggressively using the power of future guidance.

It's a step in the direction of Nominal GDP targeting, the hot idea endorsed recently by Michael Woodford at the Jackson Hole conference.

But while Woodford is one of the most respected monetary academics in the world, the economist who deserves the most credit for taking a wonky idea and making it mainstream is Bentley economics Professor Scott Sumner who writes the blog The Money Illusion. ...

That really is the key here: Not only has he been incredibly influential, but he really has done it almost entirely through his blog. Also, the bi-partisan swath of his adherents is remarkably rare for an economic pundit. ...

Does this mean I get blamed when the hyperinflation arrives? | The Money Illusion
Seriously, I'm flattered by all the press coverage, but I've succeeded in going from being underrated to overrated.  Still, I'm very appreciative of the coverage in The Atlantic and BusinessInsider.

I'd like to point out that this has been a group effort by all of the market monetarists.  Woodford, Krugman, and Jan Hatzius of Goldman Sachs all mentioned David Beckworth.  I'm not trying to engage in false modesty, I presume some of my posts were fairly persuasive, or maybe I'm just a louder voice.  But I lack the technical skills of people like Beckworth and Josh Hendrickson.  Nick Rowe knows much more theory than I do, and is a more creative thinker.  David Glasner and Bill Woolsey know more economic history than I do.  Marcus Nunes and Lars Christensen work harder than I do.  So it's a real group effort, and I think we complement each other well. ...

Rioters besiege British, German and US embassies in Khartoum | World news | guardian.co.uk

The British, German and US embassies in Khartoum have been besieged by rioters as the wave of anger over an amateur film denigrating the prophet Muhammad spread around the Islamic world and beyond.

Protesters in the Sudanese capital were reported to have targeted the German embassy first, storming through the outer wall and setting fire to a car near the gates before being pushed back by police firing teargas. The crowd then moved on to the British embassy nearby.

US identifies Coptic Christian man behind anti-Islam film - USA - FRANCE 24

Federal authorities have identified a Coptic Christian in southern California who is on probation after his conviction for financial crimes as the key figure behind the anti-Muslim film that ignited mob violence against U.S. embassies across the Mideast, a U.S. law enforcement official told The Associated Press.

The official said Thursday that authorities had concluded that Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, 55, was behind "Innocence of Muslims," a film that denigrated Islam and the prophet Muhammad and sparked protests earlier this week in Egypt, Libya and most recently in Yemen. It was not immediately clear whether Nakoula was the target of a criminal investigation or part of the broader investigation into the deaths of U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans in Libya during a terrorist attack.

...In the English-language version of the trailer, direct references to Muhammad appear to be the result of post-production changes to the movie. Either actors aren't seen when the name "Muhammad" is spoken in the overdubbed sound, or they appear to be mouthing something else as the name of the prophet is spoken.

Defying Japan, China sends ships to disputed islands - EAST CHINA SEA - FRANCE 24

Six Chinese ships sailed into waters around a disputed archipelago on Friday, with Beijing saying they were there for "law enforcement" around islands Japan nationalised earlier this week.

The move -- dubbed "unprecedented" by Tokyo -- marked the latest stage in a deteriorating row between Asia's two biggest economies and came as reports emerged of Japanese nationals being physically attacked in China.

Tokyo summoned the Chinese ambassador to protest what it insists is an incursion into territorial waters around islands it controls, called Senkaku, but claimed by Beijing as Diaoyu.

Yeah...with election next year and economy slowly going down the toilet she needed card to pull from her sleeve and ...woala!!!  its immigration. Immigration is always an issue here when we approach election (people need someone to be angry at and pure immigrants are just perfect). She also needed to take that one card from Abbot's hands because by the election date he will not have much to promise to the people. As we already have Coalition LIB/NAT. practically in all states making havoc by austerity that they love so much if Abbots goes with promise of more austerity on federal level he is done. Here in Queensland Coalition is sucking 14000 public servants as we speak and things are not (or not going to be) better elsewhere. Even mines are in trouble (China slowing, prices down, dollar too strong), some are closing but most are laying off thousands of workers. Tourism...do not even ask ...and manufacture is practically all gone to China or on their way there.
So Julia is doing what she can to save her ass...She was all for off shore processing but she wanted immigrants deported to Malaysia ...Abbot ( Howard) had previous arrangements with Nauru ( Kevin Rudd stoped it).  It was a straggle for a while and she caved in to Abbot's proposal. There is not much of the difference between two places. The whole saga with "boat people" is so sad and I will not go in to it. As always they are going to be used in this election too.
Australia is criticized all the time for its human rights but those in power do not seem to care.

Americans turn to Europe, downgrading China: Survey | EurActiv

Fifty five percent of Americans believe Europe is more important to their national interests than China or the rest of Asia, according to the latest German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) transatlantic trends survey, released yesterday (13 September).

It's a striking change of perception from a year ago - when Europe was considered 17% less important - said Ian Lesser, GMF's executive director in Brussels.

The shift represents a return to US attitudes registered in 2004, when a majority of Americans (54%) viewed the countries of Europe as more important to their vital interests than the Asian countries (29%). On the European side, those polled said that the US is more important than Asia, up 9% from last year.

Although the eurozone crisis might have played a role in boosting American perceptions and underlining the strong interdependence of the transatlantic economy, European and Americans also synch in their negative view of China (52% in the U.S. and 50% in Europe).

Bangkok Post: Qaeda says Benghazi attack 'revenge' for leader's death (15/09/2012)
"The killing of Sheikh Abu Yahya only increased the enthusiasm and determination of the sons of (Libyan independence hero) Omar al-Mokhtar to take revenge upon those who attack our Prophet," Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula said in a statement, quoted by the US-based monitoring group.

...

But it stressed that "the uprising of our people in Libya, Egypt and Yemen against America and its embassies is a sign to notify the United States that its war is not directed against groups and organisations ... but against the Islamic nation that has rebelled against injustice."

...

Mohammed al-Megaryef, the head of Libya's national assembly, said on Saturday that the attack on the US consulate in Benghazi was planned and "meticulously executed."

So, was the outrage over the Mohammed video just a cover?

Who knows. In the fourth news upthread on the riots, there is this reaction from the local Salafist force:

Who are Libya's Ansar al-Sharia? - LIBYA - FRANCE 24

...For Mathieu Guidère, the attack on the embassy in Benghazi - which cost four Americans their lives - could very well be the work of Ansar al-Sharia. "The attack corresponds directly to an appeal from al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, who called on Libyan Salafists to target Americans in order to avenge the death of his former deputy, Abu Yahya al-Libi, who was killed on June 4 by a US drone in Pakistan".

But on September 13, a spokesman for the group denied responsibility for the attack. "It was a peaceful protest, and the firing on the protesters inflamed the situation and gave it a different course," Hani Mansouri said at a press conference. But he also added that the US should have evacuated its ambassador on September 11 as "a precautionary measure".

Happened at the same time I guess. Also, it does not have to be the same reason for different embassies.

Oh, and get your speculation three days early on ET:

Said militia group might have motives stemming from Zawahirir declaring that the US had killed al-Libi. Killing the US ambassador to Libya being retaliation for the US killing their Libyan.

Ayman al-Zawahiri confirms death of Al-Qaeda deputy - NY Daily News

Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri has released a video coinciding with the anniversary of the September 11 attacks, confirming for the first time the death of his deputy, US monitors said.

The 42-minute video is Zawahiri's first release in three months, and confirms that Abu Yahya al-Libi was killed in a drone strike in Pakistan's Waziristan tribal area on June 4, according to SITE and IntelCenter.

Or maybe not.

Though I added a qualifier because I was not sure of the theory, which I lifted from M of A. So the real credit goes there.

Since the Muslim Brotherhood was at the same time whipping up anger over the so-called `film' (which is a hoax) smearing the Prophet Muhammad, and pledging big anti-American demonstrations for today, Friday, the freewheeling US embassy twitter account in Cairo objected. Thanking @Ikhwanweb for the al-Shater statements, the embassy suggested the Brotherhood check out its Arabic feed. "I hope you know we read those, too," it said.

And here's the article that details the 'hoax': Romney Jumps the Shark: Libya, Egypt and the Butterfly Effect (Juan Cole, 09/13/2012)
Then it turns out that the film was shot in such a way that there was originally no mention of the Prophet Muhammad in the script, and the cast had no idea what they were getting themselves into, and then the name of Muhammad was clumsily dubbed into the final edit.

So, the film was from the beginning a fraud. It was directed by a fraud. It was promoted by a militia trainer. And Nakoula marketed it fraudulently as the work of a fictitious Israeli-American Jewish real estate agent, `Sam Bacile,' and falsely said it had been funded by "a hundred Jewish donors."

The group behind the film, in other words, managed to evoke all the classic themes of anti-Semitism as a way of disguising the Coptic and evangelical network out of which the `film' came. When they weren't busy picketing Mormons and defaming Muslims they were trying to get Jews killed for their own smears of Islam!

Spain energy sector reform ends uncertainty | Reuters
(Reuters) - The Spanish government proposed new taxes on power generation on Friday to help plug a 24 billion euro ($31 billion) funding gap in the power industry, resulting from years of selling energy below cost price, ending months of uncertainty and controversy.

The long-awaited bill, which must be approved by parliament, includes a flat 6 percent tax on power generation revenues and other levies to raise 2.7 billion euros annually and by next year stop the so-called power deficit from expanding.

..."This proposal is much better than the one leaked in July, which would have taxed wind energy at 11 percent and the firms will be able to pass much of the tax burden onto consumers," Alvaro Navarro, an energy analyst at Intermoney in Madrid said.

France seen turning to renewables for 'ecological patriotism' | EurActiv

France's government begins a review of the world's most nuclear-dependent country's energy policy on Friday (14 September), strongly in support of its small and ailing renewables sector in an effort to boost local jobs and growth.

Ministers, NGOs, unions, industries, parliamentarians and consumers will converge for a two-day conference to agree on how to conduct a six-month national debate that will seek to reshape the way energy is produced, consumed and taxed in France.

Its new Socialist government is expected to announce immediate measures to help the crisis-hit renewable energy sector - which employs 100,000 people - as part of its battle to tackle soaring unemployment.

France Will Shut Fessenheim as Soon as Possible, Batho Says - Bloomberg

Electricite de France SA's oldest nuclear plant will be shut as soon as possible as a pilot for dismantling atomic sites, Energy Minister Delphine Batho said.

...President Francois Hollande pledged in this year's election campaigning to shutter the plant before the end of his five-year term as part of a policy of curbing reliance on atomic energy. The Fukushima nuclear meltdown in Japan last year prompted concerns that Fessenheim, near France's eastern border with Germany, may not be strong enough to withstand an earthquake.

The atomic safety regulator, Autorite de Surete Nucleaire, has ordered EDF to reinforce the concrete base of Fessenheim's 900-megawatt reactors by mid-2013 or shutter the facility. EDF's plans for the work, seeking to strengthen containment in the event of a core meltdown, are being considered by ASN.

Japan aims to phase out nuclear energy by 2040 - JAPAN - FRANCE 24
Japan announced in a non-binding policy proposal Friday that it would aim to phase out nuclear power by 2040 in the wake of last year's Fukushima nuclear disaster, which renewed concerns over the safety of nuclear energy.

...Ahead of a general election expected this autumn, nuclear energy has become a hot issue in Japan with regular protests that sometimes attract tens of thousands of people calling for it to be ditched.

The issuing of a policy goal Friday is not binding on any future government, and a new administration could reverse the plan.

Last week, Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's ruling Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) recommended the country make greater use of renewable energy, and take further energy saving measures, including the use of smart metering.

..."There is no way we can accept this -- I cannot think this is technologically possible," Hiromasa Yonekura, chairman of the Keidanren, or Japan Business Federation, said of the new policy.

Arctic sea ice shrinks to smallest extent ever recorded | Environment | guardian.co.uk

Satellite images show that the rapid summer melt has reduced the area of frozen sea to less than 3.5 million square kilometres this week - less than half the area typically occupied four decades ago.

Arctic sea ice cover has been shrinking since the 1970s when it averaged around 8m sq km a year, but such a dramatic collapse in ice cover in one year is highly unusual.

A record low in 2007 of 4.17m sq km was broken on 27 August 2012; further melting has since amounted to more than 500,000 sq km.

Berlin's top security official says he has a "responsibility to the victims" of a murderous band of neo-Nazis to find out whether it is true that information on them was not passed along by city police.

Berlin interior minister Frank Henkel said today media reports that a city police informant provided tips about the group's whereabouts that were not shared with agencies actively seeking them "does not shine a favorable light on our security agencies."

Der Spiegel reports the informant gave details on the so-called NSU from 2000 to 2005 primarily "based on hearsay" and it was not clear how good the information was.

A provocative documentary on Israelis, Arabs, and sex - CINEMA - FRANCE 24

Several filmmakers have tackled the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. But few have approached the thorny subject quite like French Jewish filmmaker Yolande Zauberman and her Lebanese writing partner Sélim Nassib: through the prism of sex.

In their new documentary "Would You Have Sex With an Arab?", Zauberman and Nassib take to the streets of Tel Aviv at night, prowling bars and clubs, cafés and underground soirées, in search of Israeli Jews and Arabs willing to answer a startling question: Would you have sex with a member of the other community?

The responses, ranging from militant refusal to candid confessions of illicit one-night stands and longterm love affairs ending in heartbreak, are funny, surprising, confusing, and sometimes quite moving.

Book Review: Why Some Politicians Are More Dangerous Than Others, by James Gilligan « socialjusticefirst

In the period from 1900 to 2007, when Republicans were in power, violent death rates rose to "epidemic levels" (defined as an average violent death rate of between 19.4 and 26.5 per 100,000). When Democrats were in power, however, the rates dropped to "normal" levels, which were below 19.4. Only under Republican presidents did the violent death rates rise to epidemic levels, and only under Democratic presidents did they fall from epidemic levels to normal levels. Dwight D Eisenhower was the only Republican president under whom the violent death rate did not become an epidemic, and Jimmy Carter was the only Democrat who failed to normalise the violent death rate.

The results were statistically significant: the magnitude and consistency of the correlation were such that it could not be attributed to chance alone. Correlation, however, does not prove causation, as Dr Gilligan - being a highly experienced scientist - is quick to point out. And yet, the initial findings themselves are startling:

During the entire 107-year period, there was a net cumulative increase of 19.9 violent deaths per 100,000 population during the 59 years Republicans were in power, and an almost exactly equal net decrease of 18.3 during the 48 years of Democratic administrations.

If that sounds confusing, then bear in mind that, at the current US population level, an increase of a single digit in the violent death rate signifies 3,000 additional violent deaths per year - roughly the same number that died in the terrorist attacks of September 11th 2001.

surely a coincidence...

The Hill: Santorum: Obama victory would `fundamentally' change America (09/15/12)
On Saturday, he said Romney "understands" and "shares" the values of religious conservatives and encouraged them to help elect the former Massachusetts governor to the White House.

Santorum said that while voters were primarily focused on the state of the nation's economy, there was "more at stake in this country than just economics," and he cautioned conservatives that they would never have the support of the media or "elite, smart people" on their side.

"They believe they should have the power to tell you what to do. So our colleges and universities, they're not going to be on our side," he said.

Kate topless photos: Closer 'has broken French privacy laws' | Media | guardian.co.uk

Privacy laws in France are considered to be among the most robust in the world, with leading politicians regularly using courts to prevent the publication of embarrassing photos that would be innocuous by the standards of British tabloids.

Thomas Roussineau, who specialises in privacy law, said the French magazine Closer had undoubtedly broken the country's privacy laws by publishing photos of the duchess on holiday in Provence.

"It is totally forbidden," he said. "The castle is not the street, it is in a private place, and they are intimate pictures."

But he said it was likely the magazine had weighed up the potential cost of a fine against the revenue the photos would bring.

This is standard procedure in the French trash press:
  • magazine publishes 'paparazzi' pics of celebs
  • celeb sues for 'breach of privacy' (and yes, the law is on their side).
  • magazine is sentenced to pay damages to celeb.
  • meanwhile magazine has made plenty of sales (thanks to free publicity).
  • celeb makes good money off the magazine.
  • All parties involved go on their merry way...

What many people miss about the supposedly "strict privacy laws in France" is that it's very difficult to prevent a paper from publishing embarrassing pics, unless you know about it early enough to get a summary judgement before the magazine hits the newsstand, which is seldom the case. The law merely allows to sue, mostly for damages and, in the case of celebs, the benefit for the paper far outweighs the costs; so it's become just another "cost of doing business". Many times, there's an out-of-court settlement and the case doesn't even go for trial.

A bystander who witnessed the accident jumps down after him -- but not for a daring rescue before the train arrives.

Instead, the witness steals the man's valuables, climbs back on the platform and leaves his victim to be hit by a train.

The man -- who was on his way home from a party -- survived, but was seriously injured and doctors had to amputate half his left foot, Sweden's TV3 channel reported.

I think they are being ironic, since that is clearly not what would happen (indeed I suspect the Onion has received its fair share of threaths over the years). But yeah, in another context the same text could be written to claim that Muslims are just being too touchy.

Of course what actually happens if you mess with Jesus is something like this:

Ecce Homo (exhibition) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ecce Homo is a controversial exhibition of 12 photographs of different biblical situations, in modern surroundings, taken by the Swedish photographer Elisabeth Ohlson Wallin. The first vernissage of the exhibition was in Stockholm, July 1998 and attracted a lot of attention. As the exhibition was shown in the cathedral of Uppsala, in September same year, it raised a national debate. The reactions was often very emotional, and both positive and negative. The photos portrayed Jesus among homosexuals, trans people, leatherpeople and people with AIDS. The exhibition toured Scandinavia and continental Europe between 1998 and 2004.

Translation from Swedish wikipedia on details that were not in the english:

Ecce Homo (utställning) - Wikipedia Ecce Homo (exhibition) - Swedish Wikipedia
When Ecce Homo appeared in Norrköping in March 1999, the situation became more violent. The museum became a bomb threat and a well-planned demonstration with three hundred to four hundred participants were organized, with participants mostly from the Syrian Orthodox Church. When the demonstration reached the city museum riots broke out when demonstrators recognised Elisabeth Ohlson Wallin and started throwing gravel and shout "whore" and "cunt" to her. Several people were beaten in the turmoil that erupted when demonstrators tried to storm the museum.
Ecce Homo har vid flera visningar utsatts för attentat[1] och vid några tillfällen har man lyckats förstöra ett eller flera fotografier. Enskilda museitjänstemän har fått motta hot, och museilokaler har vandaliserats. Elisabeth Ohlson Wallin har mordhotats, bombhotats och fått hatbrev[2]Ecce Homo on several occasions was subjected to attacks [1] and at some occasions managed to destroy one or more photographs. Individual museum workers has received threats, and museum premises have been vandalized. Elisabeth Ohlson Wallin has received death threats, bomb threaths and received hate mail [2]

And the Pope cancelled the meeting with the Swedish Arch-bishop since he had agreed to and defended showing it in churches.

Because of recent history of discussions regarding free speech and religion on this stie, I feel prompted to clarify that what I object to is not demonstrations and protests (or cancelled Pope meetings), nor really destruction of photographies, but violence and threats of violence against persons.

There are plenty of nutjobs around. October 2010:

LOVELAND, Colo. -- A Kalispell woman accused of taking a crowbar to an art museum display that has spurred protests and been denounced as obscene was arrested Wednesday on a charge of felony criminal mischief. Kathleen Folden, 56, was accused of damaging a print that critics say portrays Jesus Christ engaged in a sex act.

Witnesses said the woman entered the Loveland Museum/Gallery, used a crowbar to break Plexiglas over the art and ripped the print, according to the Loveland Reporter-Herald. Mark Michaels, an area art dealer who was at the museum, told Denver's KUSA-TV that he saw the woman break the glass and grab the print, and that he tried to stop her.

He said that as the woman broke the case, she screamed: "How can you desecrate my Lord?"

Just got called by a 0899 number (highly taxed numbers in France - if you call them it costs you €1.5 plus the communication), and a lady - which does not sound a recording - starts talking: "hello? .... I can't hear you ... hello... I have important news for you, it's about..." and the line cuts off. Given the the voice really doesn't sound like a recording, I would suspect that they get a pretty good rate of people trying to call them back to know what it's about.

This is probably not illegal (although I do wonder), but certainly on the wrong side of ethical...

OK, such fly-by-night operations can be dismantled and re-created elsewhere quite rapidly. And yes, telcos are willing partners in this kind of schemes (until someone complains, that is); but since this is not 'copyright infringement", it is deemed acceptable business.

Psy Begs Mayor For Fired Lifeguards' Jobs Back - Music, Celebrity, Artist News | MTV.com

It's safe to say that with more than 167 million views on YouTube, Psy's"Gangnam Style" is making an impact on American pop culture.

Following his appearance at the Video Music Awards, Psy has taught Britney Spears and Ellen DeGeneres his signature dance moves and had the crowd screaming "Hey, sexy lady" during his performance on the "Today" show.

With his overnight success and newfound U.S. fanbase, many admirers have taken it upon themselves to create parody videos of the viral hit. Yet, there is one "Gangnam Style" video that may have backfired. Last month, 13 El Monte, California, lifeguards and their supervisor lost their jobs after posting their video spoof, "Lifeguard Style," while using the city's pool facilities without permission.

On Friday (September 14) Psy, who just signed with Scooter Braun's Schoolboy Records, stopped by MTV News and admitted he is willing to help out the group of lifeguards.
