One of those days and my brain won't function now. Nice weather though.

Coming to the conclusion higher cognitive functions are over-rated.  As long as my medulla oblongata is working, I'm cool.

Tumbleweeds:

(These are Texas tumbleweeds, greatly inferior to the ones found in New Mexico as I'm sure WoB will admit.)

Hmph. Not even good by Colorado standards.

The fun of tumbleweeds is that you're driving along and they blow across the road; you can't really avoid them, so you grit your teeth and hope that the stalk (which is strong) doesn't hit your tire and blow it out. When you hit them, they sort of explode into pieces and get inside the engine compartment.

Then when you get home, you clean out the broken pieces of bush from your radiator and front grill.

Running over tumbleweeds is a real bad idea.  Get enough bits up against a hot catalytic converter and there's an engine compartment fire.

I'm thinking I may have to research the use - if there is any - of Lyapunov exponent(s) in Kohonen maps/networks.

Truth-out
The New York City Police Department (NYPD) really has gone rogue; at least that's what a high-level FBI official believes.

Among the 5 million emails the group Anonymous hacked from the servers of private intelligence firm Stratfor in February, one seems to not only confirm the controversial NYPD surveillance activities uncovered by the Associated Press, but hints at even worse civil liberties violations not yet disclosed. Anonymous later turned the emails over to WikiLeaks, with which Truthout has entered into an investigative partnership.

In UnRelated Prison Planet News:

Feds Seek Prison Time For Obama "Hope" Artist

SEPTEMBER 5--Federal prosecutors want Shepard Fairey, the artist who created the Barack Obama "Hope" poster, to serve time in prison following his misdemeanor conviction for destroying and fabricating documents in connection with a civil lawsuit over the iconic campaign image.

In advance of Friday's scheduled sentencing of Fairey in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, the Department of Justice has filed a memorandum arguing that a prison term for the 42-year-old artist would be "appropriate."

However, prosecutors did not specify how long Fairey should be incarcerated (though, statutorily, his punishment would not exceed six months). Additionally, government lawyers have contended that Judge Frank Maas could fine Fairey up to $3.2 million.

Holed up in Denver through the weekend at my friend's place. Full day of bike maintenance tomorrow. The beer is ready. Then some hiking this weekend.

I'm suffocating just thinking about it. Although my friends here bag 14ers regularly. They're all fit 'n stuff. They could probably breathe fine on the moon.

The bike maintenance sounds fun, but I don't envy you being in Denver.  Didn't care for it.  It was like Cleveland with mountains and batshit weather.

My friend (who grew up in Minneapolis) doesn't like the city itself at all. She's an athletic person and (in her words) is here specifically for the mountains like everyone else who moves here from somewhere else.

If you're into the mountains and also want the nice city you can move to the Bay Area and pay 4x as much for your house.

More like 8x.

There are nice places in Denver, mostly near the old downtown section. Colfax Ave near the science museum, Sixth Ave near the capitol hill area, and near DU are pretty "normal" if you like inner city living...and there are plenty of lofts downtown near the train station...

If you're into hole-in-the-wall restaurants, the place to go in Denver is Pete's Kitchen, on east Colfax.

Was at Biltema (Scandinavian car parts chain, also carries bike parts) the other day and noted their big signs that they were changing all Biltema cards as they had switched banks. The interesting thing was that they had switched to Ikano, that is IKEA's bank.

I found it interesting regarding the discussions on payment system and what the big companies has their in-house banks for.

So, here's a partial list of banks of the future:
  • IKEA
  • Siemens
  • General Electric

Why future? Especially GE is very much a big financial industry player of the present.

Also VE, Daimler, BMW.

On the other hand GM was forced to split of its very relevant financial arm. Chrysler I think too.

I meant VW.

(Of course in future there could arise a corporation called VE with a bank)

The practice continues today. On September 4, 2008, the Mexican Supreme Court of Justice ruled that Wal-Mart de Mexico, the Mexican subsidiary of Wal-Mart, must cease paying its employees in vouchers redeemable only at Wal-Mart stores.[1]
