How a `Customs Union' Helps Businesses With Brexit - Bloomberg

Britain's difficult debate about how to break away from the European Union has found its way, again, to the question of how they'll trade after the split. Attention is focusing on the idea of a customs union, which would keep goods in European supply chains moving tariff-free in and out of the U.K. While such a tie-up risks undercutting some of the aims of Brexit, it could avert some of the most destabilizing disruptions to business and borders.

...

5. Has this been tried before?

Yes. Turkey is outside the single market but inside the customs union. Its customs union allows for tariff-free trade with EU nations in industrial goods, though excludes areas such as agriculture. Turkey doesn't have to accept the EU's freedom of labor movement. But it must abide by the trade deals the EU strikes with other countries. Dissatisfaction with that arrangement has grown in Turkey, where there are traffic jams at the border (due to the need for permits) and chafing at having to follow what the EU decides. If the U.K. did pursue a customs union, it would want a better deal than the one given to Turkey, which signed up to the agreement as a stepping stone to what it hoped would be future EU membership.

First they have to run down to the river Shannon to get the proper kind of mud.  Then they pack the mud into 18 by 19 cm flats.  After the mud is hard but not yet hardened the emails are transcribed using reed pens with the ends cut into triangles to make crisp indentations into the mud.  Once fully transcribed the tablets are reformed from their form, placed in a special wooden repository.  When filled the repository is burned baking the clay into low fired bricks, the bricks are placed in an intermodal container and shipped to New York and then onto wherever they need to go.

This wasn't even close:

Germany's SPD members approve coalition with Angela Merkel's conservatives - DW

Sixty-six percent of party members who voted supported a continuation of the grand coalition, while 34 percent opposed it - a clearer margin than many in the party had expected.

More than 450,000 SPD members were called upon to cast their votes a mail-in ballot, and the outcome was announced at party headquarters in Berlin on Sunday morning.

"This wasn't an easy decision for the SPD," said acting party chairman Olaf Scholz. "In the discussion [about the deal], we've come closer together. That gives us the strength for the process of renewal we are embarking upon."

Switzerland votes to keep taxing themselves.
Voters in Switzerland have decisively rejected a proposal to abolish the national broadcasting licence fee.

The country was voting in a referendum on Sunday on whether to axe the mandatory yearly fee of 451 Swiss francs ($480; £348) per household.

More than 71% voted against the plan, which was defeated in all 23 states.

I asked a German friend what would happen if they had a similar referendum in Germany, and he just laughed at my belief that Germany was a democracy.

Trump's Tantrum Trade War

Which idea is more troubling: That President Donald Trump's impending "trade war" was the product of spiraling administration chaos or a presidential temper tantrum? How about option three: Both?

NBC News and Axios issued reports Friday suggesting that some combination of Trumper tantrum and staff chaos greased the skids for the president's Thursday announcement of steel and aluminum tariffs and Friday's seemingly gleeful Twitter declaration that "trade wars are good, and easy to win."

NBC's Stephanie Ruhle and Peter Alexander report that the trade war declaration had as much to do with Trump's mood-swings and mental state as with the substance of policy:

G.W. Bush's ethics chief on Thursday night on Chris Hayes All In said of the Trump Administration "they are turning this country into a banana republic."

Tonight on MSNBC's All In with Chris Hayes, it turns out that the Kushner family's real estate holdings are all concentrated in 666 Park Ave, (not a joke), and $400 million of financing is a balloon that comes due in 2020. The Kushners have been denied loans in the USA and Jared appears to have been in conversations with many foreign nations about refinancing that mortgage, one that looked promising for the first six months of 2017 was Qatar. The Qatari declined the loan and shortly thereafer Jared was in Saudi Arabia. Shortly after that the blockade of Qatar was announced. Sec. State Tillerson reportedly was fuming about Kushner's rogue foreign policy out of the White House. Several nations have complained to US National Security personell about Kushner's vulnerability to foreign influence due to his family's financial situation. And now Mueller is investigating.

It is also reported that he has discussed that loan with bankers in other nations, including Russia, Turkey, Mexico and China.

isn't the whole idea of the Trump administration that they simply plunder the US and any other territory they can con into giving them money?

Heck, there's an argument to be made that the whole point of the Iraq war was about Cheney's bank balance. So it's not exactly a new concept.

Saudi would have wanted to attack Qatar whenever anyway, all Kuschner did was give them cover. Other countries know that the Trump's are up to their necks in debt, after all, it seems they've been trailing round the world hoovering up dodgy deals to keep their US holdings afloat for several years.

So, if the Trump's lay themselves open to blackmail while other countries get good "deals" from the US, then I guess that's what America voted for. That's the GOP MO laid bare.

Papers Of Record Are In Shock That Corporate Tax Cuts Help Corporations - Dealbreaker
The other way for companies to grow their earnings-per-share, rather than just pocketing the tax savings is to buy back their own stock. And the Journal's analysis, published Thursday, describes just how enthusiastically Corporate America is employing this strategy.  "Share buybacks announced by large U.S. companies have exceeded $200 billion in the past three months, more than double the prior year," it reports. The Journal also points out that the stock buyback boom is being driven in part by the ability of multinational corporations to pay dividends and buyback stock with profits earned overseas, after paying a one-time repatriation tax on the money held abroad at the time of the bills passage.

But at the end of the day, it's simple common sense that a tax cut on business profits will almost exclusively help make the small share of Americans who earn their living from business ownership richer. The Republican Party has an army of economists who concoct theories about how low corporate taxes spur business investment or enable companies to pay their workers more, and the Democratic Party has its own army of PhDs who say just the opposite. This feeds into the media's desire to rely on experts to tell the public what the one, true, optimal public policy should be.

Pa. redistricting leads to GOP worry, talk of impeaching justices

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) -- The Pennsylvania Supreme Court's decision to redraw boundaries of the state's congressional districts has triggered a volcanic reaction from Republicans, including talk of impeaching justices and a Democratic Party plot to stop President Donald Trump.

The ruling was indeed novel: Constitutional law scholars say they know of no other state court that has ever thrown out congressional district boundaries over a partisan gerrymandering claim.

It has implications for Republican control of Congress. It also has implications for state government: Republicans say they are worried about what the court -- with a 5-2 Democratic majority -- may do in the future to weaken the power of a Republican-controlled Legislature.

This case was brought to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, and arguments were based on the Pennsylvania constitution -- not the US Constitution. State Constitutions are, more or less, soverign and binding on everything that is not directly contradicted or superseded by the US Constitution or US Federal Law. State elections generally fall under this category, and thus are usually governed by US state constitutions and run by state officials.

So, it is not obviously appealable to the US Supreme Court - and the US Supreme Court has rejected a request to review the decision.

And thus, the obvious response is to impeach the offending judges, who have overstepped all bounds of propriety by ruling against the Republican Party and violating the cardinal rule of American politics - It's Okay if you are a Republican.

Jared Kushner stripped of top-level security clearance - Independent

Jared Kushner, Donald Trump`s son-in-law and the White House adviser, has been denied access to top-secret intelligence after having his security clearance downgraded.

While maintaining the responsibility for trying to broker peace between Israel and Palestinians and other high-profile tasks, Mr Kushner has had his interim security clearance downgraded from top secret to secret, along with a host of others. The change was also confirmed by Mr Kushner's lawyer.

All White House aides who had been working on an interim clearance were informed of the change via an internal memo, Politico reported. The document was not signed by Chief of Staff John Kelly, however.

The staffers, all operating on a Top Secret/Secret Compartmentalised Information (SCI) clearance, were taken down to the Secret designation.

Kelly Taking Control of Intelligence Briefings

A Brief Guide to Every Five-Alarm Fire Currently Engulfing The White House | NY Mag |

Jared Kushner repeatedly failed to disclose all of his foreign contacts to the FBI; is (ostensibly) a person of interest in an ongoing counterintelligence investigation; and was desperately seeking a $400 million investment from an entity tied to the Chinese government weeks before he moved into the White House. And yet, for nearly a year, the presidential son-in-law was allowed to view top secret information without a security clearance - despite his ongoing inability to pass an FBI background check.

But no more. In the wake of his botched attempt to cover for a serial domestic abuser, John Kelly has sought to reimpose discipline on the West Wing. His first order of business: Downgrading the security clearances of the scores of White House officials who'd been accessing top-level state secrets without the FBI's endorsement. Kushner didn't see why this new rule had to be applied to princeling like himself. Kelly didn't see why not - after all, the chief of staff was already (reportedly) interested in finding a way to keep Kushner from stepping all over Rex Tillerson's toes.

Now, Jared, Ivanka and Don Jr. are all (reportedly) "furious with Kelly and his allies" - and they've apparently enlisted the not-so-dearly departed Anthony  Scaramucci in their fight.

Meanwhile, the president is (reportedly) furious with all of the above.

John Kelly erased slavery -- just like Trump ignores the Palestinians | The Forward - Oct. 31, 2017 |

Kelly doesn't talk like a real estate mogul. But his perspective is similar. Compromise is good. Deals are good. Moral issues are secondary. Just as Kelly never mentioned slavery in discussing the conflict between North and South, Trump never mentions human rights in discussing the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians.

I've scoured Trump's public statements on the subject. There's no evidence he even knows that West Bank Palestinians live under Israeli control but lack Israeli citizenship, that they can't vote for the government that dominates their lives, and that they lack the freedom of movement and due process that their Jewish neighbors enjoy. He discusses an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal the way he discusses the sale of a building.

It's this amorality that underlay Trump's comment in February that "I'm looking at two-state and one-state, and I like the one that both parties like."

Saudi military chiefs ordered to retire | ulf News |

Saudi King Salman has sacked the military chief of staff and a host of other commanders in a major shake-up, state media said Monday citing a series of royal decrees.

"Termination of the services of General Abdul Rahman Bin Saleh Al Bunyan, Chief of Staff," the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) said, adding that Fayyad Al Ruwaili had been appointed as his replacement.

The monarch also replaced the heads of the ground forces and air defences.

No official reason was given for the changes, but they come as the kingdom's bloody conflict with the Iran-backed Al Houthi rebels nears the end of its third year.

A Saudi-led coalition supporting Yemen's government has been fighting the Al Houthis since 2015.

Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman, the heir to the throne and the son of the monarch, is the country's defence minister.

Abu Tor, also known as the Hill of Evil Counsel, has tremendous religious and environmental significance.

It is according to tradition the place where Judas agreed with Jewish high priests to betray Jesus to the Romans.

The land was sold for approximately $9 million by Jerusalem's Greek Orthodox Patriarch Theophilos III.

The buyers, unusually identified in this case, are American hedge fund manager Michael Steinhardt, a major donor and co-founder of Birthright Israel - the program that doles out free trips to Israel in an attempt to foster Zionist commitment and eventual emigration by young American Jews - and his partner David Sofer, a London-based Israeli financier.

He keeps threatening award winning liberal hosts with loss of their programme.

I'm laughing at myself. I actually bought Wiggo's "Mr Clean" act. Self-deception, an attempt to find an excuse for actually liking professional cycling.

There are degrees, of course, and there are clean individuals, perhaps even clean teams. Fighting doping is like fighting tax evasion : impossible to stamp it out, but generally the authorities don't even try that hard...

Her bravery is almost unfathomable to me. The moment she stepped up, she knew she would die within hours. And that it would make no difference.

That's the thing I don't get, pointless self-sacrifice. I can genuinely understand suicide bombers who achieve can make a genuine difference, either by succesful destruction of a strategic objective or a good kill ratio of enemy combatants.

But Scholl did not do this, she sacrificed herself because she could not look away. It is bravery beyond my imagining.
