Unite protests over Interserve cuts, with support from No.6

Interserve, which employs 80,000 people worldwide, said pre-tax losses had widened to £244m from £91.1m a year earlier due to margin pressure on contracts for the British government and a £217m loss on a deal building waste-to-energy plants.

Interserve is one of Britain's biggest outsourcing companies, with a £7.5bn order book that ranges from providing healthcare services in people's homes for local authorities to cleaning the London Underground.

The company said it was renegotiating two lossmaking contracts -- one providing probation services for the Ministry of Justice and another providing facilities management for US military bases.

Fears south Dublin suburb 'would end up like communist Europe' in wake of planned development
[Independent councillor Deirdre Donnelly] said she was "shocked" at the recent decision to give the go-ahead for the development.
"There is no room for such a monstrosity in Stillorgan. The student accommodation looked austere and will no doubt dwarf the beautiful street that is The Hill," she said. "My concern is that a developer could end up buying the row of cottages on the other side of the street and we will have nothing but ugly multi-storey grim buildings on both side of what should be a beautiful, historic part of Stillorgan.

The EU Justice Commissioner has been trying to negotiate such an arrangement with the US since last year. But her efforts were sidelined when President Trump approved new legislation known as the CLOUD Act in March that allows only for bilateral deals with individual countries, instead of a broader agreement with the EU. The UK is already negotiating its own agreement with the US. Jourova wants to prevent other EU countries from doing the same.

Indicted Russian Company Takes Aim at Mueller
Concord Management and Consulting is owned by Russian oligarch and caterer Yevgeny Prigozhin, known as "Putin's chef" for his ties to the Russian president.
[...]
The company asserts in its motion Monday meanwhile that Mueller must be held to the same bar as the Campaign Task Force, a component of the Department of Justice that handled all prior investigations of foreign involvement in U.S. elections since its creation in 1997 by former Attorney General Janet Reno.

[Reed Smith attorney Eric] Dubelier says Mueller's case is unlike any brought by the Justice Department: "that is, an alleged conspiracy by a foreign corporation to 'interfere' in a presidential election by allegedly funding free speech."

"The obvious reason for this," Dubelier continues, "is that no such crime exists in the federal criminal code."

Senate Unanimously Confirms Two [TRUMP NOMINEES] for the Seventh Circuit

and Amy St. Eve, who sits on the U.S. District Court for the District of Illinois, who "worked as an associate independent counsel on Independent Counsel Ken Starr's Whitewater investigation"

Speaking on the Senate floor before the votes, Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., praised both Scudder and St. Eve, saying their nominations were the result of "good-faith negotiation" with the White House.

Federal Judge Bars Facebook $7B Tax Appeal
In 2013, the IRS began investigating Facebook over its tax liability for 2008, 2009, and 2010, in which it found Facebook had understated its transferred intellectual property assets by about $7.1 billion, "resulting in a substantial underreporting of income for U.S. tax purposes in 2010 and later years."

Facebook was presumably using a strategy called the "double Irish arrangement," whereby large U.S. corporations avoid paying substantial federal tax bills by setting up an Irish subsidiary as a tax haven.

GDPR will pop the adtech bubble - Doc Searls
Since tracking people took off in the late '00s, adtech has grown to become a four-dimensional shell game played by hundreds (or, if you include martech, thousands) of companies, none of which can see the whole mess, or can control the fraud, malware and other forms of bad acting that thrive in the midst of it.

And that's on top of the main problem: tracking people without their knowledge, approval or a court order is just flat-out wrong. The fact that it can be done is no excuse. Nor is the monstrous sum of money made by it.

Without adtech, the EU's GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) would never have happened. But the GDPR did happen, and as a result websites all over the world are suddenly posting notices about their changed privacy policies, use of cookies, and opt-in choices for "relevant" or "interest-based" (translation: tracking-based) advertising. Email lists are doing the same kinds of things.

"Sunrise day" for the GDPR is 25 May. That's when the EU can start smacking fines on violators.

Feminist Current | INTERVIEW: Marian Hatcher sets the record straight on the new U.S. anti-trafficking bill, SESTA-FOSTA, Or Selling sex is selling children, Slavery!
MM: What role and responsibility can websites have in facilitating sexual exploitation/trafficking/prostitution?

MH: There are hundreds of websites that allow ads (sometimes they even assist with ad content) to be posted that sell children and (mostly) vulnerable, marginalized adults for sex.

MM: A lot of sex work lobbyists are criticizing SESTA-FOSTA

Not Stormy! Stormy be payin' dividends.
by claiming the bill harms "sex workers" by preventing them from screening clients, "negotiating safe working conditions,"and forming online communities. Some have also argued that SESTA-FOSTA will "hamper trafficking investigations by shutting down online ad venues that act as useful resources for law enforcement to identify victims." How do you respond to these arguments?

MH: Screening [!] for potentially violent sex buyers and assurances of safe places do not exist in prostitution. Our primary objective must be to end exploitation and prevent the harm that is inherent [!] to those in the sex trade. While there may be some who are prostituted [SIC] by choice, for the vast majority it is lack of choices that drives them into the sex trade -- a trade that is violent whether it is indoors or outdoors. We can't prioritize that "choice" over the exploitation of vulnerable people.

This illegal marketplace requires visibility in order to function [?]. While a small piece of the sex buying market may go to the dark web, the online marketplace has to be accessible to buyers. It cannot thrive if it goes deep underground where people cannot find it.[?]

wut
Criminalizing the consumer (sex buyer) -- the driving force of this exploitative business model -- as we have criminalized traffickers (i.e. pimps) is also something we need to do in the US to tackle this problem. We also need to provide robust exit services [?] for those who sell sex and continue to fight corporatized sex trafficking, both at the street level and online. We absolutely must normalize human dignity and respect.
Good luck wit' dat.
