Test of the Google Language Tools

by ATinNM
Mon Sep 29th, 2008 at 01:10:00 AM EST

A key stumbling block ET faces is the almost 100% use of English as the communication language.  Regularly over the years this has been noted as a barrier to greater participation by EU citizens. To counter this problem the suggestion has been made, several times, that the diaries and comments be automatically translated.  To my knowledge an experiment has never been conducted to see how useful these tools are.

This diary is intended to be a preliminary, but substantive, test of the Google Language Tool.

by ATinNM
Sun Jun 1st, 2008 at 11:09:41 AM EST

I am interested in finding what you found to be the largest problem when learning English as a second language.  I am especially interested in comments by anyone who is in the process of learning English.

This request is made to gather test data for a computer project I'm working on.

Thank you for your participation.

LQD: Traditional Jounalism Out of Touch

by ATinNM
Sun May 4th, 2008 at 04:25:48 AM EST

This was a press release by Zogby (yeah, I know) but given the large number of responses and our interest in making ET a quality, respected, and influential news source I thought it of interest to the community.

Since the release was not copyrighted it is presented in full.

In case you've been living under a rock ...

This is an election year in the US and today 22 states are conducting their primary.  While I am loathe to post US-centric diaries on ET the international interest in the next President of the US nudges me to post this diary.

Plus it will quarantine the comments thus preventing infection on the Open Thread & etc.

Thu Jan 3rd, 2008 at 05:42:20 PM EST

Every blog in the entire frickin' Universe has an Iowa Prediction diary.

Why should ET be any different?

Instead of giving percentages I will give my top 3 predictions and why I put them there.

from the diaries. Use as a results thread when they come out. -- Jérôme

Iowa Caucus -- More Than You Want to Know

by ATinNM
Sat Dec 29th, 2007 at 02:58:09 AM EST

This is an in-depth look at the Iowa caucus.  Contained herein is more information than anyone outside of Iowa cares about, or needs.  The primary (HA!) purpose is to provide a basis for understanding, in my opinion, a sterling example of participatory democracy.

I have attempted to highlight the most important parts of the process.

The Iowa caucuses meet, precinct by precinct, to elect delegates and alternates to the county convention.  At the county convention delegates are elected to the district convention who elect delegates to the state convention who elect delegates to the National Nominating Convention.

Naturally, other business happens at those other conventions but this thing is long enough.

US Meet-Up?

by ATinNM
Thu Nov 15th, 2007 at 09:20:28 PM EST

(Having been dared .....)

It has been suggested having an ET Meet-Up in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

This diary is posted to answer three questions:

  1.  Is there enough interest to have a Meet-Up in Albuquerque?

  2.  When?

  3.  What should we do?

Grain Production and Population -- Diary II

by ATinNM
Wed Nov 14th, 2007 at 07:07:14 AM EST

Last June I wrote a diary with the same title.  In the last paragraph I said:

Prognosis:  food prices will rise.

Well, they did.

pat, pat, pat myself on the back.

Now that the 2007 agricultural year is almost over, where do we stand?

Same As It Ever Was

by ATinNM
Sun Oct 7th, 2007 at 06:10:30 AM EST

Responding to a public outcry against the big merchant-banking firms who had monopolies on key commodities and good the goverment convenged a council to investigate.  Specifically they wanted public feedback regarding:

  1.  Were large commercial companies prejudicial to the public interest?

  2.  Should all the commercial companies be disbanded, or their activities merely limited?

  3.  How could this limitation be achieved and the abuses by the commerical companies suppressed?

Global Model -- Factors

by ATinNM
Thu Aug 16th, 2007 at 04:57:49 AM EST

This diary was sparked by Jerome's diary Credit markets: "Don't panic", they beg and the ensuring discussion.

The bursting of the global liquidity bubble is only one of the affective factors the globe will be facing over the next umpty-umph years.  Given my -- obsession? - with Models I thought it might prove interesting if we put our collective heads together and compiled a list of other affective factors and trends that we will be facing over the next 20 years.

Grain Production and Population

by ATinNM
Sun Jun 24th, 2007 at 07:48:42 AM EST

This started life as a comment to an article posted by Fran in the Salon and got out of hand. From the Energy Bulletin:

With carryover stocks of grain at the lowest level in 34 years, [as of June 16, 2006, grain stocks rose in October 2006 to the lowest level in 25 years and have now fallen back again] the world may soon be facing high grain and oil prices at the same time. For the scores of low-income countries that import both oil and grain, this prospect is a sobering one. (...)

Farmers are facing a record growth in the demand for grain at a time when the backlog of technology to raise grain yields is shrinking, when underground water reserves are being depleted, and when rising temperatures threaten to shrink future harvests.

Learning Model Building

I would be interested in learning the following:

  1.  When you were a student was Model building discussed in any of your classes?

  2.  Was structured instruction, such as classes or seminars, offered?  Was such instruction required?

  3.  Was Logic, Epistemology, Mathematical Philosophy, or Systems Theory taught, required, or suggested?

  4.  Does the organization you now work for support, defined broadly, education or training in any of the above?

Neo-Con/Lib Information Base Design (Pt II)

by ATinNM
Sun Mar 12th, 2006 at 04:46:06 PM EST

Part II has the Resources and Operational overviews of the Information Base.  This was broken-out from Part I to structure discussion and criticism.  The description of the operation has been consciously made as broad as possible to encourage as many ideas as possible.  Also, given the length of Part I, the shorter the diary, the better.
