Status Quo Ante

Both Bush and NATO are demanding a return to the status quo ante in Georgia.

  This is impossible.

The boundaries of the quasi-independent state of South Ossetia and the historic borders of South Ossetia differ enormously with a quilt-work of Georgian villages under Georgian control and separate roads.

The now-ruined  Ossetian capital of Tskhinvali is surrounded on three sides by Georgian-occupied land and ethnic Georgian villages within the historic Ossetian borders.  This territory overlooks the city in the river valley leaving the city to the mercy to whomever controls the heights.

A map taken from John Pike's site shows how difficult any status quo ante  will prove to be.

The control of territory largely mirrors the ethnic composition of the towns which reflects the geography of a mountainous region where valleys are occupied and travel along the valleys is much easier than across the summits.  Note the separate  Ossetian and Georgian bypass roads.

This thing is far from over.  The status quo ante is an unstable and noncontiguous fiction.

Remember the Olympic embrace of the Georgian and Russian athletes.  May they and their spirit send a message that the people of the Caucasus can overcome the poison of ethnic strife and the so-called leaders that casually sacrifice their citizen's lives as proxies in a dirty game.
