Several weeks ago, a number of you requested that I post a 'photo essay' on Finland. Voila. Your request is my command.
Why Finland? First, I married a Finn. My daughter was born in Finland. I lived there from May 2001 - June 2004. From May 1 to Sept. 14, 2003 I walked the length of Finland (see map below). It was a 1500-mile journey whose goal was to uncover, for myself, the Finnish connection to nature and my personal connection to a land that could not be more different than the one I grew up in - but that was now the homeland of my wife, the birthplace of my daughter and a place I had come to know and love...kind of. The result, will be a book - due out in 2006 - based on that walk (yes, I will make a big annoucement when it is published and expect each and every one of you to buy 150 copies each) entitled NOTES FOR THE AURORA SOCIETY . HERE is an excerpt I posted a few weeks ago. All photos mine unless otherwise noted - and if any of them are too large, let me know and I will rescale. Enjoy. Read more... Buttercup and red clover came up through the cracks in the asphalt. Geraniums grew in a long, white plastic window-box that hung just below the windows. They blossomed a brilliant red. The rye in the fields was not yet ripe. Read more... (4 comments, 930 words in story) |
