"Hi there. My friend LEP called me last night and said 'L', there's something wrong with the photoblog the last month or so. It doesn't have any..... you know....sex appeal any more. Its getting boring.... Well that's what I'm here for. And I've brought along a couple of friends who I'll introduce later. LEP understands, 'if you wanna get 'em in the seats ya gotta show a little skin.' I can do that for sure. Anyway, y'all get posting and I'll see you later. L.

During a recent bbq we tried to capture all who attended with a close-up shot of one eye - it sadly failed, all the pictures were out of focus. I think we forgot to switch the camera to macro mode; this experiment did not begin before the entire bucket of sangria had been finished. Which also could explain the out of focus differently. Oh well.

Even so, a picture of just one eye speaks volumes about a persona's character. Continue estHer!!

by In Wales (inwales aaat eurotrib.com) on Fri Jun 20th, 2008 at 05:39:45 PM EST
[ Parent ]
That's because I had previously taken a shot focused on the rooftops, added in the victims and then refocused the rangefinder but forgot to refocus the lens: the rangefinder isn't coupled to the lens, so you have to read the distance off the dial and set it on the lens.
by Colman (colman at eurotrib.com) on Sat Jun 21st, 2008 at 03:47:08 AM EST
[ Parent ]
Oh I see.  When the rolleiflex is refocused through the rangefinder, it does both lenses together doesn't it?
by In Wales (inwales aaat eurotrib.com) on Sat Jun 21st, 2008 at 04:37:04 AM EST
[ Parent ]
Yes, it does. Some of the 6x6 folders are coupled as well, but they cost twice as much, at least.
by Colman (colman at eurotrib.com) on Sat Jun 21st, 2008 at 05:04:13 AM EST
[ Parent ]
That's not a rangefinder, BTW, it's twin-lens-reflex, as the secondary lens  is actually showing a version of the image that will be captured, and directly shows the focus. A rangefinder doesn't really do that: my Bessa-T and Ikonta have a small window, with field-of-view equivalent to about a 300mm, in which you line up two small images to get them in focus, You frame through a seperate viewfinder. Most modern rangefinder cameras combine the viewfinder and rangefinder for common focal lengths.

I may have to re-think Rothko.  The ones in the Rothko Chapel (something like that) in Houston just look like someone laid some color on with a roller, all dark and no real variation.

My father and I went and he said "no wonder he killed himself."

But those are beautiful.

I saw the Rothko exhibition that toured nine or ten years back. It was literally awesome. There was a progression from big, physically imposing canvases that were full of life and movement (internal dynamics), and then gradually to darker, immobile slabs of black and grey with squiggles scratched into them like meaningless hieroglyphs. They were his last works.

These are just some playing around I did with the horizontal parallels of some of the wave photos I took.

I should have noticed that you did those yourself!  What a talent.  I thought you got incredibly lucky finding Rothkos that complemented your photos.

I won't be in Europe until Sept 23, then we leave Oct 10, beginning in Rome, ending in Paris.  Just a short trip, but I'll take what I can get!

This is a Paterson film reel, set for a 35mm film but I need to widen it for 120 roll.  It tells me to twist the two halves clockwise until it clicks and I should be able to lengthen it.  It isn't clicking and I am afraid I will snap it if I use utter brute force on it. Anyone else have experience of this type of reel?
