Countdown to the September Paris Meetup

One more week, and we will be at the Paris Meetup. Tought I put up another diary for final touches and for communication between participants. Off course spectators are also welcome to comment. :-)

Also for those who will be still present in Paris on Sunday - maybe we can start collecting ideas.

The official Meetup will start Saturday, September 20th around 13:00 at the following Place:

I'll be arriving in Paris thursday pm (driving up from Lyon). I know there'll be people in Passy Home when I arrive but I shall be interested in convivial drinky thursday evening, preferably at a good beer pub.

Friday evening is sorted, but I'm open to suggestions for daytime strolling.

The Miller's boat "Risico", with the Millers included- will be tied up at the Port de Plaisance, Paris Arsenale, at 11 Boulevard de la Bastille. We are unable to do much adventuring right now, since our bow thrusters ate a sweater in Villenuve Sur Yonne, and have suffered a severe fracture of the shear pin as a consequence. Any and all ETers who remain in Paris on Sunday are cordially invited to drop by for a decent croissant and a glass of wine or two.

Sunday 14 September 2008 - latest update

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON EUROSTAR SERVICES: SUNDAY 14 SEPTEMBER TO SUNDAY 21 SEPTEMBER (INCLUSIVE)

Eurostar is now operating a very restricted timetable with very few services, and intervals of several hours between some trains. We recommend you avoid travelling unless your journey is absolutely essential.

Travellers should check-in as normal for the train times given on their tickets and we will try to put you on one of the next available trains. This could mean waiting a long time before boarding. Journey times will also be significantly longer.

I'll have to see if I can think of something, but my timetable was fairly tight anyway and it really isn't looking as though I'm going to be able to do this... :( I had a couple of hours of delay time built into my return schedule, but this is looking like more than that...

Maybe you should change your ticket to Disneyland Paris:

BBC NEWS | UK | Channel Tunnel traffic at a third

On Saturday the south tunnel came back into limited use, with some lorry shuttles and a reduced Eurostar passenger service operating.
Eurostar said that on Sunday it expected to run up to 10 trains each way between London and Paris, and up to five trains each way between London and Brussels.
It also said it would be operating the daily service each way between London and Disneyland Resort Paris.

That's one train every 2 1/2 hours in each direction, which is very nearly the normal service.

I hope so, since looking at the ferries, that doesn't seem to be an affordable option given the time constraints.

If I have to wait too long on the return journey I could miss the last connection to Cardiff. I also hate having to travel on trains where there are too many people and confusion regarding which train and where I should go since I don't hear the announcements and there is never any deaf awareness in the way they run travel services anywhere.

Just remembered I booked an earlier one than last time I was in Paris - 16.13 arr 17.34. So unless there are still significant delays I should be ok. Thanks for the offer though - I'm probably worrying for no reason.

Thanks, Migeru- it's reassuring that there aren't many less trains going than normal...I'm on the same train back as In Wales, but, unless I make other arrangements, I have to be back in London by about 7.30 and preferably earlier.

I'm also waiting to find out if the children are going to come down with the virus that flattened me over the weekend...because if they're ill they may well want their mum-and their dad won't have them anyway.

A couple of days to make the decision, I think... :/

Following the fire in the Channel Tunnel last Thursday we were able to re-start limited operations on Saturday. We are currently running a restricted timetable with fewer services, longer journey times and intervals of several hours between some trains.

We advise that you consider rearranging travel planned for the next two weeks unless absolutely necessary. This especially applies if you are travelling over the weekends of Friday 19th to Sunday 21st September 2008 and Friday 26th September to Sunday 28th September 2008.

If your journey is essential, then you should check in for the train time given on your ticket and we will endeavour to put you on one of the next available trains. Please be aware that you could experience extended waiting times, particularly between Friday and Sunday when there may be a delay of up to several hours before boarding. Your journey time will also be significantly longer than normal.

As we are not operating the last trains of the day Eurostar check-in will close significantly earlier than usual:

London check-in will close at 18.45 (BST) until further notice
Paris check-in will close at 20.00 (CET) until further notice
Brussels check-in will close at 20.30 (CET) until further notice

I'm booked on the 18.00. It's a dead cert that won't be running, and that leaves me fighting it out for a seat on the last train.

I feel a complete wimp saying this, but I'm not yet well enough to do that. I was in bed at 5pm last night and I'm on my way there now. I can't stand all the way to Paris. I wish I could, but I can't.

I've had a quick look at flights, but-believe it or not, according to the Stansted website, you can't fly to Paris from Stansted and from Luton I reckon I could fly to Hong Kong for less.

I'm really sorry not to meet you all. Next time, maybe. I hope you all have a great time :)

As it happens, I woke up this morning a rather unattractive shade of yellow. So my post-viral exhaustion is now suspected to be hepatitis A. The ironic thing is that, not having dragged myself into work, I feel better than I have for days.

Fire or no fire, it looks as if I wouldn't have been going anywhere this weekend.

But I'd like to see lots of photos :)

there's no gender-free way to say it in english, unless you go back a century or so and say 'progeny' or 'descendants'.

in italian you say figlii (m) that can cover both genders.

it is odd to refer to adults as children! probably a clue in there as to national character...

Well, I guess as 'Kinder' can have also the meaning of offspring, at least where I live the words 'Nachkomme/Nachwuchs' are not used in a colloguial way. 'Kinder is also gender neutral, so many use daugthers or sons if the have children of only on gender. Mine are 13, 7 and 4. I figure you don't call 'em kids once they stop wanting to come with their parents to this sort of thing, but that's just me.

As it happens, if there aren't other kids, mine won't likely want to come either, which hopefully won't make it harder for me to come.

if it's true they have 10 trains per day each way that's almost a full schedule. My train out is very early so I shouldn't have a problem - it's the return train that might be more iffy (in the sense that I might end up bumped to the next day).

The Firenze restaurant has just been sold, and their whole staff has changed.

The other restaurant nearby, the Cantalou, a good auvergnat is willing to open for us on Saturday and offer 3-4 different menus, including at least one fish and a salad-time main course (the others would be steak or auvergne suasage, in each case with aligot, a specialty of mashed potatoes with melted cheese which is incredibly good).

We can have either the outside terrace for ourselves, or all of the interior if the weather is too bad; both can host 40 people.

Thank you Jérôme. I know there is confusion about vegetarism. However, a fish is an animal and thus usually not part of a vegetarian diet, though it might be different in France. :-)

The Cantalou is fine, a bunch of us had dinner there last year on Saturday evening. The food was surprisingly authentic, and I think everyone was happy.
