The polls have closed in Chile and turnout was reported to be heavy. I'll update this as soon as I hear results. Please root for Michelle Bachelet.

I scanned Brazilian papers with Googlenews, and if my minimal all-Latin knowledge helped me right, they say 44,76% for Bachelet, 26,73% for Piñera, 23,52% for Lavin after 12% of ballots counted.

Dec. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Chilean voters backed Socialist Michelle Bachelet, the candidate of the coalition that has governed since 1990, in her bid to become the country's first woman president.

Bachelet, 54, garnered 45 percent of votes in early returns, short of the majority she needs for a victory today, according to a tally the government posted on its Web site. The early result suggests she may face a run-off election next month with the second-place candidate, multimillionaire Sebastian Pinera, who won 27 percent in early returns.

BTW, in Europe, the general rule is that votes can be counted slower in the cities, and as cities have more left-wing voters, during counting there is usually a shift favorable to them.

So if the same rules apply in Chile (possibly not), maybe Bachelet's final percentage can still get above 50%.

Indeed. With 56.5% counted (found official source!), it's 45,68% - 25,83% - 23,32%. Bachelet one percentage point up, but this 'speed' won't be enough for 50%.
