Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

Can you tell how the regions are faring? How are the ex-Eastern areas doing? My German certainly isn't up to trying to interpret statistical press releases!

Die Zahl der Arbeitslosen hat sich im Oktober um 153.000 auf 4.085.000 verringert (West: -96.000 auf 2.739.000; Ost: -56.000 auf 1.346.000).

This is the saisonally not corrected number (absolute and month-on-month change), "Ost" is East.

There is a pdf link at the end of the page. The first page is a map of the unemployment rate down to county level, there you have the geographic comparison.

Great, so it's a country-wide drop.

I somehow left off the rest from the press release:

Die jüngste saisonbereinigte Abnahme entfällt zum größeren Teil auf Westdeutschland, in Ostdeutschland gab es nach Anstiegen im August und September wieder einen Rückgang.

The improvement in the saisonally corrected numbers comes mainly from the West, in the East, there was now reduction but that after increases in the previous two months.

Die sozialversicherungspflichtige Beschäftigung hat in West- und Ostdeutschland jeweils um 1,0 Prozent zugenommen.

Employment with obligatory social insurance increased in both Westn and East by 1% against 12 months ago.
