RE: the abduction of pagan festivals by Christianity.

In Nordic mythology, it was the goat tthat brought presents around this time. It wasn't much of a tradition change from one kind of bearded animal to another = Santa Claus. In fact Santa's name in Finnish is Joulupukki or Yule Buck (goat).
