it reminds me a bit of this chart i once saw in a discussion of bourdieu, where he had laid out the left and right in french society, tying it not just to money, but also to one's side of the divide between economic and cultural capital. middle class teahcers would be on the left, middle class shopkeepers on the right, and so on. then he added stuff like whether you drank pernod or white wine in there, it was pretty interesting.

american society is at once ignorant of class and fractured into a zillion subclass conflicts. conservatives have become quite skilled at playing the latter, liberals are still crippled from their disavowal of the left in the cold war.
