Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

We had a lot of discussion on this when we first started the photo thread and the 600 pixel 100kb thing seemed the easiest way to go.  The volume of photos comes and goes, sometimes we barely hit 100 comments, sometimes over 200.  It really varies.

But it is definitely a topic worth discussing again.  It seems to be a mix of server issues and whether people have broadband or not.  Some people can't access photobucket etc and so don't want thumbnails but the full size photo to see directly here.

Is anyone even trying to download this thread with dial-up? I have DSL at half a meg, which is ten times as fast as dial-up, but (with the line at full stretch, I've checked) it takes several minutes to get the diary. Even then, Photobucket doesn't upload all the pics, your stencil photos at the top for example remain unfinished. (Does Photobucket time out?). (The other image servers seem to work OK).

Most people will find it easily downloadable, so too bad for the others. But may I suggest fewer photos, so there can be a bit more discussion like last week? Once the number of photos gets high (to be discussed!), it might be possible to make a call to stop posting any more for that week?

I don't know if photobucket times out or not. It can sometimes be a bit slow for me when I am using it.

The thing about the photoblog that makes it hard to work out how best to run it is that it can be so variable.  Some photos invite lots of comments and others can be great but there isn't always a discussion point.  Then some themes like this one surprise me by people having loads of photos to post.

We could look to doing a spin-off blog on the weeks where a theme seems to be really popular, and ask people to post in the spin-off if they have more under one of the themes they wish to post.  Or limit people to X photos each per week?

Set a rough limit for the photos in any one blog, and call time when that limit is reached. Yes, and suggest spin-offs if a topic seems popular. (A spin-off can be posted immediately..?) Or put off till the next week for "standard" offerings.

This week's blog seems to have a record number of photos, maybe close to 150. Normally sixty is a good showing. If this volume continues and is a problem, we can limit the number of photos for any one blogger to let's say 10 per blog to start. (I get extra because I post for estHer while she's in school.)
Then if one blogger has too big a "photo imprint" he can buy photoblog credits from the other bloggers. Linca can set up the "photoblog credit exchange." I'm telling everyone right now mine are not for sale.

I've always worked on a rough limit of three per diary, (but a very flexible three ;-)

does that mean I've got a credit saving of about seven perdiary to use? ;-)

I must have used all my credits till the end of february...! :-(

Still, I do agree on some limits, as it makes for harder choices and is always useful for one's learning !

I would exempt the three "bloggers" as they may need to push further by posting new pictures ?!

Yeah it's been suggested before. But you have to change your settings in advance, and click on every comment one at a time to see what's in it... Thumbnails would be better than that...

And how do you tell lurkers and newcomers that the Photo Blog now on the FP calls for this and that settings change for those without high bandwidth?

I don't know how possible it is in Scoop, but the "Read More" link could be modified so that it automatically loads the thread as dynamic threaded... Should be a feature request for ET 2.0. Having a "low bandwidth" option so that some threads are automatically loaded as dynamic.

And warning users to beware of loading the thread is simply a matter of asking InWales and LEP to insert the appropriate text above the fold...

There seems to be a problem with the internets this weekend, since Thursday. Is your problem persistent or only recent?
