We had a lot of discussion on this when we first started the photo thread and the 600 pixel 100kb thing seemed the easiest way to go.  The volume of photos comes and goes, sometimes we barely hit 100 comments, sometimes over 200.  It really varies.

But it is definitely a topic worth discussing again.  It seems to be a mix of server issues and whether people have broadband or not.  Some people can't access photobucket etc and so don't want thumbnails but the full size photo to see directly here.
