Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

When we say so, or when we use the term "Anglo-saxon" (my emphasis in the blockquotes above), we're not credible. Because of who says it and where, this is very good support for the theory that The West™ means the UK and US with possibly a second tier including Ozzies, Kiwis and Cannucks, but that's about it.

Ozzies?  Are they ruled by the Wizard of Oz, or just a nation of really big Black Sabbath fans?  Pretty sure you mean Aussies, dear Mig.

And who are the Kiwis?

Although, the thought of referring to John Howard as the Wizard of Oz has some real appeal.

That was...yeah.  So they're New Zealanders.  I'm pretty sure we just lump them in with Aussies.

And, having designated the Aussies second-stringers behind the Brits, we haven't already danced well into diplomatic-crisis territory? ;)

Ladies and gentlemen,
drop your borders

Now that George W. Bush has been officially elected, single, sexy, American liberals - already a threatened species - will be desperate to escape.

These lonely, afraid (did we mention really hot?) progressives will need a safe haven.

That would be easy for a Canadian.

Americans travelling abroad quickly discover the depts of antipathy towards the US government and how differently Canadians are treated and, like the Canadians who wear their flag on their backpack in order not to be confused with the other North Americans, they start wearing a little Canadian flag.

Well, I can certainly testify that, among upper- and upper-middle-class Brits (and one Dutch) my age, there doesn't seem to be a lot of antipathy for the US government.  In fact, there seems to be quite a bit of support, which led to some very heated debates.

I submit that Americans traveling abroad are a lot more likely to oppose the current government than one might automatically think.  Even among soldiers, who have a reputation for being quite right wing (but who are actually just as anti-war as the country as a whole these days), the two candidates who've received the most donations are the two candidates who opposed the war (Paul and Obama).

It's not my experience -- and, granted, I've only been to one country, but I have experienced people of many nationalities abroad -- that antipathy towards the US government typically extends to Americans as individuals.  I worried about it, but people abroad aren't stupid.  If you're there, it's a pretty good bet you're not the stereotypical American who doesn't care about the rest of the world and isn't at all intellectually curious.  They know that.

It's just that the Canadians are pushovers, so everybody loves them. ;)

Canadians aren't pushovers.

Whenever Canadians have fought in military combat, they  have excelled.

It's just that they believe that fighting should be a last, and not a first resort.

So now they are known as peacekeepers for the UN and they do a damn good job of it.

The All Blacks played a role in bringing down apartheid, did you know?

I didn't think that any Rugby team particularly covered itself in Glory during that period.

State Your Position » about the header

The NZRFU constitution contained much high minded wording about promoting the image of rugby and New Zealand, and generally being a benefit to society. In 1985 the NZRFU proposed an All Black tour of South Africa. Two lawyers sued the NZRFU, claiming such a tour would breach the NZRFU's constitution, which it clearly did. The High Court duly stopped the All Black tour. The 1981 Springbok tour of New Zealand could have been stopped by the courts. It is interesting that protest groups did not attempt such a remedy within the "system" in 1981. The All Blacks did not tour South Africa until after the fall of the apartheid régime (1990 - 1994), although after the official 1985 tour was cancelled an unofficial tour did take place in 1986 by a team including some but not the majority of All Blacks players. These were known outside South Africa as the Cavaliers, but advertised inside the Republic as the All Blacks.

For the first time in history, rugby in New Zealand had become a source of embarrassment rather than pride. The sport fell into a six-year decline, arrested only by the country's victory in the first Rugby World Cup in 1987.
