Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.
Hiddink may have got the team to stop the Dutch attacks, but it took Arshavin to win: what an absolutely marvelous game! He prepared the 1-0 and Torbinski's marvelous 2-1, beyond shooting the 3-1, and starting at least a dozen other, failed attacks...

Another factor is that the Russians ran, and ran.  I was even sure they would falter in the verlängerung, but they just kept running and attacking.  They never collapsed into defense, yet when they had to defend, they were faster and more solid.

What a tournee!

Hmmm. Wouldn't a factor be that the Russians have a very long winter break, and indeed have football as a summer sports (March to November), making them be near their peak physically, compared to other European footballers trying hard not to think about vacation time ?
