Do they really believe that Spanish speaking swing voters (that is, apart from elite-in-exile communities) would buy this interpretation of Chavez?

They must, which is quite puzzling.

However, a lot of the Spanish-speaking US vote is "white" in Latin American terms - Chávez and Morales are too "indian".

You shouldn't underestimate the anti-indigenous racism in Latin America.
