Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

Schumer is apparently going to put more money in for it, according to what he said today.

... and since, basically, the Chairman of the House Transportation Committee is ticked off at the last minute Bushian "surprise in the punch bowl", it seems likely that anything that gets added by the Senate will stay in, in conference.

I've been accused of being a Marxist, yet while Harpo's my favourite, it's Groucho I'm always quoting. Odd, that.

I'm actually not nearly as concerned about the bill as I was initially, because my assumption had been that Obama would name a number, and the GOP and Blue Dogs would then talk it down some.  $775bn scared the shit out of me, because I simply don't think that's anywhere near big enough to get the job done.

But all that didn't happen.  Obama hit a number, and the congressional Dems stepped in, and have talked it higher ever since.  The Blue Dogs are holding the line (probably, just to make things thoroughly annoying, thanks to Rahm).

Whether Nate Silver was right about his Price is Right strategy, I've no idea, but it worked out that way anyway.

In the end, I think we're going to wind up with a decent bill.  Maybe even a good or great bill (a man can dream, right?).  Quite a bit larger, with a lot more of what our side wants.

Be nice to America. Or we'll bring democracy to your country.
