Accepting that the world is really run by a small cabal of elites whose names we don't even know can actually be quite liberating.

That's quite understandable. Accepting any set of beliefs that hands off responsibility to distant powers always brings a false sense of liberation. Life is in truth so damn complicated and we will always spend it in uncertainty about where we are heading, what we are doing, whether we are right or wrong, how we can understand others and how we can love, that abdicating the wondering and wandering for a dogma can be quite a relief. That's why doctrines, sects, cults and religions do so well.
